11 H1N1 cases in a week, health officials on alert


A sudden rise in the number of swine flu patients in a week has put health authorities on an alert with doctors being advised not to rule out H1N1 virus infection among influenza related cases. Health authorities have registered 11 swine flu patients in a week. Three are on ventilator, while two are critical, health authorities said.

New infections are being reported from Bhosari, Kharadi, Nigdi, Kothrud and Lonikand. A 55-year-old woman from Lonikand who was admitted to Global Hospital at Rahatne Phate and a 30-year-old pregnant woman who had to undergo a premature delivery at Aditya Birla Hospital are on ventilator, Dr Vinayak More, district civil surgeon said. Dr S T Pardeshi, chief medical officer at PMC, said two patients were critical, however, surveillance measures have been stepped up and doctors have been told to check influenza patients for swine flu.

Doctors across hospitals admit there is an increase in the number of cases of viral pneumonia and a few are turning positive for H1N1 virus (swine flu). However, there is no reason to panic as sporadic cases will occur, said state surveillance officer Dr Pradip Awate. On their part, the National Institute of Virology (NIV) is also conducting research at Janata Vasahat and other slums to estimate the viral disease load. This is being done with general practitioners, Awate said and hence there is a likelihood that more number of patients were being examined as part of the research project. NIV officials were however unavailable for comment.

?We are increasing our vigilance,? said Dr Prachee Sathe, nodal officer for H1N1 virus infection and head of Ruby Hall Clinic ICU. There is no need to panic as medical fraternity anticipates some cases due to weather conditions. The clinical picture is mild and swine flu should be treated as any other flu, Dr Sharad Agharkhedkar, former president of the city unit of the Indian Medical Association said. Symptomatic treatment is important, he added.

Swine flu: 12 cases detected in Pune

Pune, Mar 14 (PTI) Detection of about 12 Swine flu cases in the last fortnight has put the health authorities here on an alert, as two patients are reported to be in a critical condition. While some of the cases have been detected in a "pro-active" research survey, undertaken by the city-based National Institute of Virology (NIV) in a locality here, other non-specified areas, too, have reported H1N1 infections. "While the cases detected by NIV are being treated as outdoor patients without admission, other cases, which include two critical ones, call for a greater surveillance, as Pune had not reported any fatality on account of Swine flu in the last year," Dr Pradip Awate, State swine flu surveillance officer told PTI. Two of the three critical patients, admitted to ICU in different hospitals, were put on ventilator, health officials said. General practitioners, treating seasonal influenza cases, have been advised to screen patients for suspected H1N1 infections, they added. Pune became the epicentre of swine flu cases since recording the first fatality of the dreaded infection in 2009, leading to vigorous surveillance measures that saw a substantial reduction in its transmission. H1N1 claims its 1st victim of year


Doctors are shocked after the city registered its first swine flu fatality of the year with the death of a 48-year-old woman in Sahyadri Hospital.

The deceased, a resident of Tandulwadi in Baramati, was also suspected to be suffering from pancreatic cancer.

Warning signs
"After continued symptoms of swine flu since March 8, she was taken to KEM hospital on March 10. The hospital authorities immediately advised that she be admitted in Sahyadri Hospital," a health official said.

"The doctors immediately sent swabs to Lal Pathological Laboratory for testing as she had all the symptoms of swine flu. She tested positive and was since then on a ventilator. She succumbed to the infection within four days," he added.

Woman dies of swine flu, 3 in serious condition


A 48-year-old woman died of swine flu at the Sahyadri Hospital here on Wednesday, while three more patients continue to be on ventilator support in various city hospitals. Apart from these cases, there are 10 patients who have been diagnosed positive for the H1N1 virus, district health officials said. This is the fourth death in Maharashtra due to the virus this year, and the first in Pune.

Another swine flu death in city

PUNE: A 51-year-old man from Katraj died of swine flu at a city hospital on Thursday, taking the death toll from the contagion since April last year to two in Pune district and five in the state. The deceased, Shrikant Shinde, had been in the isolation ICU of Bharati hospital for the last 10 days, said city health chief S T Pardeshi. "He had tested positive for the pandemic H1N1 virus on March 5. He had no associated illness and co-morbid condition. He died at 3.15 pm on Thursday," he said.

Another swine flu death in city

Around February 21, Shinde showed typical symptoms like mild fever, cough with expectoration and mild breathlessness. He consulted a doctor at a private hospital in Bibvewadi and was admitted on February 28. His X-ray report showed a bilateral pneumonic patch. Shinde's condition worsened following which doctors put him on Tamiflu from February 28.

H1N1 deaths in Pune sparks panic in city

MUMBAI: The two deaths in Pune due to H1N1 infection has rekindled fears of resurgence of the virus in the city. However, there has been no positive case in Mumbai since June last year.

Authorities said all possible precautions are already in place. Between April last year and March this year, 58 positive H1N1 cases have been reported, of which Pune reported 80, while Nashik and Aurangabad reported four each. Mumbai had reported two cases in June, 2011 when a 37-year-old Chandivili woman and a three-year-old girl from Tardeo tested positive.

Executive health officer Dr Anil Bandivadekar said the city need not be anxious. "As per guidelines, patients are being regularly tested and given Tamiflu," he said, adding that isolation wards in several hospitals have been dismantled.

PUNE: A 10-year-old girl with Down's Syndrome from Dhankawdi, and a sixty-year-old woman from Kothrud died of swine flu in the city on Friday, pushing the death toll to four in Pune and seven in the state.

"The girl, Amruta Joshi, succumbed to the swine flu infection at around 6.30 am at Bharati Hospital on Friday. Her throat swab report received after she died showed that she had swine flu infection," said paediatrician Sanjay Lalwani, medical director of Bharati Hospital.

Amruta came to the hospital with fever, cough and breathless around 9.15 pm on Thursday. Her X-ray report showed a bilateral pneuomonic patch. She was admitted to the paediatric intensive care unit of Bharati Hospital around 10 pm the same day. She had acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and was put on ventilator support, Lalwani added.

"Amruta suffered pulmonary haemorrhage, bleeding inside the lungs. Her condition deteriorated further and she died," Lalwani said. Her throat swab report was sent to National Institute of Virology, Lalwani said.

The other deceased Shubhangi Kulkarni was in isolation in the ICU of Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital for the last four days. "She had tested positive for the pandemic H1N1 virus on March 15. She had co-morbid conditions like diabetes, obesity and hypertension. She died at 7 am on Friday," said city health chief S T Pardeshi of Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).

Kulkarni, a retired nurse, was admitted on March 12. "Her X-ray report showed she had bilateral pneumonia. She had developed ARDS and was put on a ventilator. We started Tamiflu from day one," said physician Manisha Deshmukh.

Her condition deteriorated after 11 pm on March 15. The oxygen saturation in her blood dropped following which she suffered a cardiac arrest. She was revived, but suffered another arrest, Deshmukh said.

It looks like the state is beginning daily reporting in Pune only. Yesterday's report does not include the latest 2 fatalities. Comparing to the weekly totals from the entire state earlier in this thread, there has been a significant surge in serious cases in Pune.

Even as Swine Flu has reared its head again, claiming two lives in the last 24 hours, district health officials, hospital administrators and even chemists are asserting that they are well equipped to deal with the situation. At Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) run Naidu Hospital, about 60 beds have been kept aside for H1N1 patients in isolation wards. However, the hospital cannot admit serious patients as it doesn’t have ventilator facilities, confirmed PMC medical officer Dr Shyam Satpute. Besides isolation and ICU beds at Sassoon General Hospital, health authorities are also relying on private hospitals to take care of H1N1 patients. Most private hospitals confirmed that isolation wards at hospitals were ready to accommodate Swine Flu patients. Rekha Dubey, CEO, Aditya Birla Hospital said the isolation ward for H1N1 patients that had been readied during the pandemic three years ago, is available to accommodate patients. Manisha Bobade, medical superintendent, Jehangir Hospital said though isolation beds hadn’t been used for H1N1 patients for a long time due to lack of cases, they were ready to accommodate H1N1 patients. Vijay Changediya, secretary of Chemists Association of Pune district, said adequate stocks of anti-flu medicines were available. “The stock isn’t very much as they weren’t cases for a long time but it is adequate to tide over for a few days. And supply is easily available,’’ he added.

Two swine flu deaths were reported in the city on Friday.

Fourth swine flu death in three days has led the National Institute of Virology (NIV) to closely study and analyse the genome of the H1N1 virus. Deputy director of NIV Dr Vidya Arankalle said the institute has received several samples and they were being sequenced to understand the characteristics of the virus that has struck again after a gap of one and a half years.

On Friday, Shubangi Kulkarni (58) from Ghorpadi gaon became the third swine flu victim in three days. She was a diabetic and a patient of hypertension, said Dr Sham Satpute, assistant medical officer of health at Pune Municipal Corporation and nodal officer in charge of swine flu. She was unwell from March 8 and was treated by a private practioner till March 12 after which she became serious and was admitted to Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital. She was given Tamiflu on March 14 but by then her condition had worsened and she succumbed on Friday morning, doctors said.

Amruta Joshi (10), who was born with Down?s syndrome was unwell since March 8. Doctors said she had not taken any medicine. She was admitted to Bharati Hospital on March 15 where she died on Friday morning.

Treatment was delayed in both the cases.

District civil surgeon Dr Vinayak More said since March 1 there were 34 swine flu cases with five persons on ventilator support at Prayag, KEM, Aditya Birla and Global Hospitals.

A total of 13 patients have been successfully treated, four are being treated on an OPD basis and the remaining nine have been admitted to hospitals.

A meeting of experts from National Institute of Virology, government medical colleges and others will be held in Mumbai on Saturday to emphasise that immediate action was the need of the hour.

Pune Municipal Corporation maps areas to stem spread of H1N1

PUNE: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has taken steps to tackle the spread of H1N1 influenza in the city. Mayor Vaishali Bankar on Saturday said that the administration would undertake screening of suspected patients.

According to the civic body, as many as 33 positive cases of swine flu have been detected in the city, so far. People suffering from cough, cold and fever have been advised to visit doctor for a check-up. There are five critically ill swine flu patients in Pune district at present.

The city has witnessed a surge in H1N1 infections due to fluctuation in the day and night temperatures in the last few days. The administration has undertaken mapping of all areas where H1N1 patients were detected so far.

"We have enough stock of Tamiflu tablets. The screening of suspected patients is being undertaken at 47 PMC-run hospitals and 13 private hospitals in the city. All suspected patients are being administered Tamiflu doses. The civic body has set up a process to send the swabs of suspected patients to National Institute of Virology (NIV)," Bankar said.

The H1N1 patients are being treated at Naidu and Kamla Nehru hospitals which have isolation wards. Besides these, 13 private hospitals have about 43 ventilators for treatment of H1N1 patients. As many as 10 patients have been discharged from various hospitals in the city, she added.

H1N1: Ventilator, Tamiflu syrup shortage


After four deaths in three days, no death due to swine flu was recorded in the city on Saturday. However, at a meeting called by Jayant Kumar Banthia, Additional Chief Secretary, the issue of shortage of Tamiflu in syrup form in the city was raised by local health officials.

District health officials said that a total of 1,266 persons were screened on Saturday, out of which 50 persons showed symptoms but did not test positive. Their treatment has been started.

Since March 1, a total of 41 cases of swine flu infections have been detected in the city out of which six patients are currently on ventilator support.

PMC chief medical officer ST Pardeshi said that there were only two ventilators at Naidu Hospital and they have made a demand for additional ventilators.

At Sassoon General Hospital, medical superintendent DG Kulkarni said that additional arrangements will be made at the hospital for accommodating swine flu patients. At a meeting Bandhia assured that he has written to the central government for procurement of the Tamiflu in syrup form. According to Pradip Awate, state surveillance officer, the meeting took stock of number of issues related to the need of more ventilators and isolated wards for the swine flu wards.

H1N1 cases in Mumbai sporadic: Health officials

In the wake of four H1N1 deaths reported in Pune, a high level meeting of state health officials was convened in Mumbai on Saturday to assess the situation in the state.

The meeting at Mantralaya was headed by JK Banthia, additional chief secretary and attended by officials from Directorate of Health Services, Directorate of Medical Education and Research, premier research institutes like Pune?s National Institute of Virology and Mumbai?s Haffkine Institute.

The deliberations centered on understanding the reasons for the spurt in H1N1 cases. While scientists confirmed that no mutation were reported in the H1N1 virus while experts said the four deaths and rising number of cases should be termed sporadic.

?Of four patients who died, three had other co-morbid conditions like cancer, diabetes, hypertension and Down?s syndrome, hence there is no need to create a scare or panic,? said Banthia.

PUNE: From Monday, only high risk patients with flu-like symptoms and those suffering from severe symptoms like breathlessness and high-grade fever (defined as category A) will be tested for swine flu infection in the city.

This was decided at high-level technical committee's meeting convened against the backdrop of sudden spurt in H1N1 cases in Pune and neighbouring Pimpri Chinchwad on Sunday. The meeting was held to assess the need to revise the prevailing guidelines for detection and treatment of H1N1 influenza cases.

"Only patients down with influenza-like symptoms but having associated illnesses like diabetes, hypertension and other chronic illnesses as well as those falling in category A, irrespective of whether they have other co-morbid conditions or not, will be testedfor swine flu infection," Pravin Shingare, director, department of Medical Education and Research (DMER) said.

City Briefs: H1N1: 17 more cases on Sunday


PUNE: A total of 17 new cases of swine flu infection were detected in the city on Sunday, said Dr N G Bilolikar, Resident Medical Officer, district hospital, Aundh. He, however, said that apart from the six patients who were put on ventilator over the past few days, no new patient was put on ventilator support on Sunday. With this, the number of swine flu patients in the city has reached 58. Meanwhile, a meeting was convened by Dr VM Khanande, joint director of health, with virologists and experts from National Institute of Virology. NIV deputy director Dr MS Chadda said, ?There is no need to panic. We will examine samples of high-risk patients.?
