[h=1]State of Louisiana reports second COVID-19 related death[/h]
March 15, 2020

The State of Louisiana reports a second death related to COVID-19. The Orleans Parish resident was a 53-year-old individual with underlying medical conditions. The patient was being treated at Touro Infirmary in New Orleans.

"Sadly, we have lost our second Louisianan to COVID-19,” said Gov. Edwards. “We ask the state to join us in sending prayers to the family members and friends who are going through this difficult time. As the number of positive cases continues to rise, we need every person to take the necessary actions to help reduce the spread of this virus. It is an extremely serious situation that demands all of our attention. Oberhelman said the very nature of Carnival made New Orleans a virtual petri dish for a local outbreak.

“Besides the fact that you have people from all over the world, what do you do at Mardi Gras? You go to parades,” Oberhelman said. “And some of those visitors were from places like Italy, France and Asia, where the virus was already spreading before we saw it here.”

From parades to the shoulder-to-shoulder scrum of Bourbon Street, Oberhelman said the celebration is tailor-made for community spread.

Experts don’t expect warmer temps to help in the Coronavirus fight

“The only reason we call flu seasonal is because during wintertime people are indoors within 6 feet of each other and most likely to transmit respiratory droplet transmitted virus. We thought it was going to behave the same way,” says Dr. James Diaz

Diaz is a professor of public health and preventative medicine at LSU Health. He says unfortunately the more we learn about coronavirus the less experts like him think it will follow the same pattern.

“Animal coronaviruses can be seasonal and the ones that cause colds in little kids can be seasonal because these are the alpha corona viruses.”
...
“This one is different. It behaves very much like the SARS virus. It’s closely related to the original SARS virus which can occur at any time and the MERS virus, which is another beta coronavirus, occurs year-round.”
