WHO says Liberia wrongly added 1,000 deaths to Ebola toll
Reuters
(Reporting by Tom Miles; Editing by Mark Heinrich)

GENEVA (Reuters) - A surge in Ebola deaths reported by the World Health Organization at the weekend arose from about 1,000 Liberian deaths wrongly ascribed to the disease, the WHO said, and were removed from an updated data set released on Monday.

The revised data from the World Health Organization shows the three worst hit countries have suffered 5,987 deaths, nearly 1,000 fewer than previously reported.

"Liberia's figures came in but they've since said these were actually non-Ebola deaths that were reported as part of our Ebola deaths and we will be taking them off. So the whole world went up and the whole world will come down again," WHO assistant director general Bruce Aylward told reporters.

FluTrackers made the comment early on that we were posting for historical purposes the various case and death counts, however, we noted that the true numbers will never be known. For much of this year the ebola outbreak in Liberia has been out of control. Please do not become too invested in the published numbers.

we at gsgs do not necessarily agree with flutrackers on matters like this.
In fact, we think the numbers are quite useful - when they are given.

LIBERIA

Case incidence has been declining at a national level since mid-November (figure 2), although there was a slight rise in case incidence in the past week. A total of 31 confirmed cases were reported in 4 districts in the week to 28 December, 2014, compared with 21 cases in 5 districts in the previous week.

The district of Montserrado, which includes the capital Monrovia, continues to account for the most intense transmission in the country, with 19 confirmed and 16 probable cases reported in the past week. In the north of the country, near the Sierra Leone border, Grand Cape Mount is the other county experiencing high EVD activity, with 10 new confirmed cases.

The only other districts to report confirmed cases in the past week are Bong and Sinoe (1 confirmed case each). Eleven districts in Liberia did not report any confirmed cases during the week, indicating that the geographical reach of the outbreak in the country is now contained to a limited number of districts.
