Liberia: Ebola Hits Bassa Second Populous District - One Confirmed, Six Suspected

The Town has just a public clinic which has fewer than 10 nurses who have said their lives are at risk

Wee District, Grand Bassa County - One person has been confirmed an Ebola patient in District Three (Wee Statutory District), with six others who came in direct contact with the patient being tracked by the Grand Bassa County Ebola Task Force.

District authorities confirmed the presence of the virus in the densely populated community of Compound Three, a settlement with over 25,000 people, as denying that the deadly virus doesn't exist still lingers amongst many residents in the area.

Sources say, the patient, a woman, arrived in the district a week ago from Dolo Town, Margibi County and felt very ill before her relatives opted to take her to a nearby town where an herbalist's healing failed to recuperate her.

But when the family resolved to take her to the only public clinic in the district's main town, her specimen was then sent to the Ebola Lab in Charlesville and proved positive...

Liberia: Ebola Deaths Hit 40 in G/Bassa

The Government of Liberia has resolved to quarantine the entire Dolo's Town Community adjacent the Firestone Rubber Plantation in Margibi County.

A resident of the town who fled to District #1 in Grand Bassa is reported to have also said the Ebola virus have claimed the lives of over 40 persons in Grand Bassa County.

The disclosure was made by Senators Peter S. Coleman and Nyonblee Kangar-Lawrence Tuesday in Monrovia. Senator Coleman told the Senate that there has been a massive spread of the virus from Dolo's Town to district # 1 in Grand Bassa County.

Senator Coleman told plenary that security checkpoints have been set up between Nimba-Grand Gedeh and RiverCess-Sinoe counties.

He explained that movement to these and other areas will be limited to avoid the spread of the virus to other parts of the country.

He revealed that C.B. Dunbar Catholic and C.H. Rennie Hospitals have been shut down due to the outbreak...

Epidemiology and surveillance

Between 19 and 20 August 2014, a total of 142 new cases of Ebola virus disease (laboratory-confirmed, probable, and suspect cases) as well as 77 deaths were reported from Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone.

Health sector response

Questions have been received in WHO Headquarters about the original proposed budget for the response and the new draft budget, which is being reviewed by partners. The increase in needed resources is based on improved data and understanding of the situation on the ground in the affected countries. The new estimation of costs is derived using a unit-cost model, built for the most intense transmission areas and reflects the average operational costs based on the current situation in the affected countries. The major assumptions for the cost estimates will be announced towards the end of next week.

WHO continues to receive reports of rumoured or suspected cases from countries around the world and systematic verification of these cases is ongoing. Countries are encouraged to continue engaging in active surveillance and preparedness activities. As of today, no new cases have been confirmed outside of Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, or Sierra Leone.

WHO does not recommend any travel or trade restrictions be applied except in cases where individuals have been confirmed or are suspected of being infected with EVD or where individuals have had contact with cases of EVD. (Contacts do not include properly-protected health-care workers and laboratory staff.) The Liberian Ministry of Health reports 754 deaths as of 8/24 in the post above, while the WHO reports 694 deaths as of 8/26. This discrepancy is further evidence of how confused things have gotten in West Africa.

Liberia: Suspected Ebola Patient On the Run in Nimba, Flees Hospital

Monrovia ? FrontPageAfrica has gathered that a suspected Ebola patient whose specimen was brought to Monrovia for testing has escaped isolation in Sanniquellie, Nimba County. The suspect, a male is said to have left the center after the electricity went off.

"He left the center because the electricity went off, accordingly because he was afraid", Teeko T. Yorlay, Assistant Superintendent for Development confirmed to FPA. Assistant Superintendent Yorlay said health workers have already taken the specimen of the man who has been showing signs and symptoms of the virus to Monrovia for testing...

The Grand Bassa County local administration is alarmed about the increase in deaths reported in towns bordering Margibi County, and has quarantined several towns within its domain, where deaths have occurred. WHO's 8/28 report for 8/21-26 shows LIB new cases of 1378 up from 1082, up 396/6 days = 66 new cases/day, in line with previous report daily averages of 58, 63 and 55/day, but WHO deaths rising from 624 to 694 only averages 11.6/day, far below previous daily death averages of 14, 16, 29 and 48/day.

WHO should be claiming a major SLOWDOWN in the Liberian death rate compared to continued high new case rates, but they are not.

Liberia's situation report 101 in post #167 above shows 754 deaths as of 8/24. The numbers from WHO are supposed to be current through 8/26 and their source (The Liberian Ministry of Health) is also the author of the situation report. Either there is a lag of several days in getting data from the Ministry of Health to WHO or there is some other confusion. Frankly, I think both are way low. The recently opened treatment center in Monrovia is losing an average of one patient per hour, just in that one center.

The edited correction to the math error in my earlier post was lost, and will be reposted: WHO's 6 day 8/21-26 new case increase was only 296 or 49/day, also lower along with the reduced death rate.

Welcome franzpick!

I think the decreased daily reported illness/death rate is a reflection of the difficulty of keeping accurate counts at local and regional levels within Liberia. They report to WHO and there is a time delay.

I believe the Liberia official government ebola numbers reported to the world and to WHO are very understated.

Health Promotion

? MOHSW along with UNICEF began training of 400 gCHVs in Montserrado County.

Highlights
Case Investigation
? There are discrepancies between transfers done by the Case
Investigation Team (12 patients) to the MSF ETU and the number of
patients reportedly received by the MSF ETU (27 patients ).
? A patient from Capitol Hill was transferred to Redemption Hospital
Holding Unit as there is no space at the ETUs in Monrovia

Montserrado County
? 1292 (96%) of 1346 listed contacts were seen by the four tracing teams.

JFK ETU
? Center has far exceeded its capacity and
cannot admit any new patient for now
? Total admission as at this morning was 64
(32 males and 32 females)
? Total number of confirmed cases was 13

Critical Issues

Nimba County
? A 20 yrs female contact that escaped from contact tracers in Monrovia was found at
Cestos River Bridge between Nimba and Grand Gedeh Counties and is currently being
quarantined at JFDMH in Tappita.
? 7 AG YAMAHH Motorbikes were received from MOHSW for Ebola response
? The Psychosocial team, Case management and the County Task Force headed by the
county superintendent distributed food items to 7 communities.

Bomi
? A body (probable) was buried in Tubmanburg.
? Psycho-social activities and social mobilization/health promotion were conducted at
district level.
? The national TA arrived in county to provide technical assistance to CHT relative to
Ebola response.
? There five (5) patients presently in the holding center in Tubmanburg.

Lofa County
? Nine (9) new probable cases reported (2-Kolahun District & 7-Foya)
? Total of 9 deaths:
? 2-confirmed from FCMC
? 7 Probable: 4-Kolahun District, 1-Foya District, 1-Vahun District,

Margibi
? The World Food program delivered food items to Dolo Town Community.
? Training of (112) health workers was conducted by the National case management
team for the reopening of Health Facilities in the County.
