The virus of the chikungunya touches 70.000 people with the Meeting

PARIS (Reuters) - the Minister for Health, Xavier Bertrand, announces that 70000 people were touched up to now by the virus of the chikungunya, transmitted by the mosquitos, with the Meeting.

"We are on a rate/rhythm of progression of 20.000 cases per week", specified Xavier Bertrand at the time of a joint press conference with Fran?ois Baroin (Overseas) and Leon Bertrand (Tourism).

Fran?ois Baroin announced the sending with the Meeting of 300 soldiers of metropolis and 77 frameworks of civil Safety, which will come to be added to the 500 men already deployed on the island to take part in the operations of demoustication.

In addition, 65 additional beds were open in the medical structures of the Meeting and hundred others will be it if the needs justify it. Twenty doctors and thirty nurses of metropolis were dispatched on the spot.

On the whole, 3.600 people, all confused services, will be committed on the ground, according to the Minister for the Overseas.

A series of messages of information on the disease and the means of protecting itself will be diffused in the media.

Xavier Bertrand made a point of stressing that the insecticides and larvicides used to destroy the mosquito vector of the disease "are products recommended by WHO and usually used in metropolis and in the Antilles".

A polemic on the possible toxicity of these products currently develops with the Meeting.

The mayors of two important communes, Saint-Paul and the Port, decided more to use them on their territory.

Leon Bertrand for its part stressed that the Meeting "is not a prohibited destination". But it specified that the travellers were "to be informed of the precautions to be taken" against the punctures of mosquito.

The sector of tourism, which represents 10.000 direct employment, records a significant number of cancellations and a fall of the reservations for the next months.

A TEAM Of WHO To the MEETING

From the economic point of view, Fran?ois Baroin indicated that an interdepartmental circular made it possible right now to the prefect of the Meeting to take measures in favour of the companies in difficulty because of the epidemic: terms of payment of the tax liabilities and social, compensation for the short-time working.

On the 70.000 cases declared since the beginning of the epidemic in March 2005 (nearly 10% of the population), 65.000 were it since mid-December.

"It is very difficult to estimate the people number completely cured to date", specified Gilles Br?cker, director of the national Institute of medical day before (Invs).

The strong articular pains which constitute the principal symptom of the chikungunya generally disappear after a few weeks from evolution.

The medical authorities maintained Tuesday the diagnosis "by defect" of a first fatality of the virus, boy a nine year old deceased on January 13.

Twenty-five other cases of death, mentioning the chikungunya like one of the possible causes of death, were listed to date, primarily at old people.

Identified in East Africa in 1953, the chikungunya had until now struck of the African and Asian countries stripped on the medical level.

The ignorance of the disease prevents the medical profession from making a diagnosis as for the duration of the epidemic.

"the World Health Organization decided this morning to send a team to the Meeting", specified Xavier Bertrand, who wishes "to accelerate the efforts of research" on the chikungunya and other emergent diseases transmitted by the mosquitos.

Re: machine translation

"the World Health Organization decided this morning to send a team to the Meeting"

This outbreak began growing at an exponential rate at the end of December.

There have been reports of human to human spreading, and this is supported by the huge increases in cases over the past weeks.

It was not until today, almost 5 weeks after exponential growth was recognized did WHO decide to send a team to La Reunion.

Cases are now being reported in Sechelles(1,000's), Madagascar (dozens), France(?) and Switzerland (1).

What has taken so long?
Is this Pandemic Chikungunya?

20,000 cases per week! 20,000 cases per week.....
If the WHO was not on the ground before this time they should be tried and jailed. imo.

DB, If this isn't H5N1 carried by mosquito then it is certainly something in the same vain and as horribly worrisome as H5N1. We all need to sit up and take notice.

Re: The Numbers

Re: The Numbers

If this was H5N1 and it follows the 1918 H1N1 model:

I would be looking for the total number of cases to be up around 400,000 when all is said and done for this first wave.

I would be looking for the death counts over the next 2-4 weeks on La Reunion to give us an idea of the true mortality rate.

If the case fatality rate of 50% for H5N1 is correct than there should deaths somewhere in the range of 180,000 - 220,000.

If the CFR is like the 1918 figure in which it is believed that 100 million people died, than we should see somewhere in the range of 30,000 - 60,000 deaths.

Even though I believe the most likely resembles H5N1 it could very well something else.

Re: The Numbers

For the newly concerned about the Chikungunya virus. Could someone post it's symptoms and how it is spread. Then how tests are being done. Has it been linked as postive with and linked to H5N1? Can Bats also spread the virus as some have suggested in Africa?

Symptoms, etc.

In February 2005, an outbreak was recorded on the French island of Réunion in the Indian Ocean. As of February 8, 2006, 70,000 residents have been hit by the virus (out of a population of about 777,000). France initiated a massive effort to eradicate mosquitos' nesting grounds involving over 3600 people, including 500 troops. An additional 300 troops are currently on their way as of February 8, 2006.
In neighboring Mauritius, 3,500 islanders have been hit in 2005.[2]

"This is the biggest epidemic (of chikungunya) ever recorded in the world," he said on Monday.Chikungunya -- a Swahili word meaning "that which bends up" -- is caused by a virus spread by mosquitoes. The meeting also brought in experts from the prestigious Pasteur Institute and the National Institute for Health and Medical Research (INSERM), as well as the IRD.The meeting decided to dispatch 4 scientists to Reunion on Monday for a week-long mission to assess any risk of the virus being transmitted from a mother-to-be to her foetus and to look at ways of safely eradicating mosquitoes without harming Reunion's biodiversity.Other areas of work are in fundamental research, notably the virus' life cycle, vaccine research and mosquito reproduction. DANGERS OF THE CHEMICAL DÉMOUSTICATION ? SAINTS-LOUISIENS SAW SOLDIERS COLLECTING DEAD BIRDS

They saw them depositing the skins in paperboards laid out in their vehicles. Formal prohibition to photograph these died birds, indicates our journalist Jean-Fabrice Nativel. God in the chikungunya ?
Published in the edition of Thursday February 16, 2006 (Page 10)

PERSONNE does not know when ḻepidemy of chikungunya will s?arrêtera. Aujourd?hui, there is 10% of the population which is reached. Will we arrive at 50% ? In my own family, there is of it more d?une ten. That starts with headaches, fever. Pains of the skeleton and a paralysis of the members. They have all l?impression which the drugs make no effect. The majority d?entre them thinks of God and request. J?ai somewhat arranged the prayer of Robert Riber :
"Key it with the fingers of the heart
When the suffering of the chikungunya touches my body,
C?est my heart which is touched the most.
When the pain wounds my body of this epidemic,
My body is disfigured.
Aujourd?hui, on our roads d?Hommes,
They are legion the epidemics of the world.
I want to belong myself to the chikungunya
I request from the Lord my God,
With the words of my heart.
I believe in a God, I believe in his power to cure me.

Help me to preserve me mosquitos, to fight them, to look after me. Make that I get rid of the refuses in my court. Inspire and support all those which have the responsibility to fight against ḻepidemy."

The chikungunya n?est neither of right-hand side, neither of the center, neither of left... nor d?aucune religion.

The prayer helps and will help with the drugs to relieve and push back the chikungunya. A little d?eau, more one drop of géranium, a little honey. C?est a remedy - among so much d?autres - to perhaps relieve the pain of the chikungunya.

<!-- ================ texte de l'article principal ================ -->The chikungunya, explain the official scientists, is a virus immuno-depressor. C?est for that that so many people fragile, old, more or less patraques, pass from life to demise, when nothing enabled it to foresee. They are deaths "indirect", c?est marked on the certificate of death, the CV of the stiff in departure for l?au-beyond, while passing by the mortuary. These deaths, are "good" deaths, which n?emmerdent anybody, parce qu?au bottom, one estimates qu?il is "normal" qu?ils are it. D?ailleurs while reflecting well, one could tell you qu?ils had died without the knowledge, a little as the Mr the Jordan of the Middle-class man Gentleman made prose without the knowledge. As for the others, the anomalies, which all for common point of s?être carried as a charm, to d?avoir chopé the CHIK, then which trespassed in record time, they pose a serious problem with our médicalo-administrative elites. One knows d?autre causes death only the CHIK ; it could be the CHIK to 98 %... But as the official dogma is that the chikungunya does not kill, even s?il can be mortal, as l?admet Doctor Perrin - when one passes it to the question - nobody dies of the chikungunya to the Meeting. One is likely more to receive a meteorite on the corner of the muzzle than to assemble virus. And in l?absolu c?est an act anti-citizen to trespass suddenly, only to irritate the journalists and to weary the authorities which flytoxent all the country briskly, and even the taken care funeral ones, with tricks that more nobody n?ose to employ on such a scale. Useless d?interroger official epidemiologists. The answer is the same one everywhere : "Is necessary to ask the prefecture". The Cayrel prefect, swears his large gods qu?il n?est to him not doctor and that c?est with the authorities of health to cause. As for Doctor Perrin, that which declared recently that its job was "to envisage the medical catastrophes" (sic), and still that "l?Aedes albopictus did not return in the houses" (Re-sic), useless to ask him a figure, he does not know them except those, many, which appear in the bottom of its sheet of wages. Acknowledge how that made ḻanery expensive ! While waiting for, Friday, one will announce very officially around fifty to us of deaths "indirect", which makes much, considering that last week the macabre calculation n?affichait that 29 trespassed with the meter. D?où thus leave the 21 new ?nominés? ? 100 000 cases of CHIK, 50 died, and why not a little virus West Nile even of dengue for corser the whole ? Misery, Villepin prepares a committee d?accueil of the first flock !

MACHINE TRANSLATED:
Can one already advance figures of morbi-mortality of the chik?
Side mortality, the DRASS/CIRE is devoted to a work similar to that carried out after the heat wave in Metropolis: comparison of the data with those of the previous years. The official figure is of 29 deaths, but it is raised certainly more and will be reactualized soon, while knowing that natural mortality increases approximately 10% each year because of the ageing of the population. Many questions are posed about these deaths of young men. The systematic refusal of the autopsy by the families does not make it possible to advance clearly in the research of the direct imputability of the chik, versus the myocardial infarction for example.
Side morbidity, i.e. of multiple pathologies due to the chik, a very broad range is drawn up by it by the various specialities: among the child, the pregnant woman, medical old men... (cf FAQ).

French island has 3 possible H5N1 cases

Oct 26, 2005 (CIDRAP News) ? Three people from the French island of Reunion who were exposed to birds during a recent visit to Thailand are suspected of having H5N1 avian influenza, and authorities are rushing samples to Paris for testing, according to a BBC News report.

A 43-year-old man was hospitalized in Saint-Denis, capital of the Indian Ocean island, on Oct 22 with weakness, headache, and a cough, the BBC reported. One test for H5N1 was inconclusive, but a second test was positive for H5N1, Reuters news service reported. The story did not say which tests were used.

The man was part of a group of 20 tourists who were in Thailand from Oct 12 to 19, Reuters reported.

He and two fellow tourists suspected of having avian flu had close contact with birds at a park, the BBC said. Reuters said the other two people also were tested but results were not yet available.

Even if the tests don't show H5N1, the urgent response to the situation is representative of actions occurring worldwide as more countries try to manage and reduce the threat of the H5N1 virus to people and poultry.

</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>So far this year, four people have died of the Chikungunya virus and 48 others have died of causes linked to the virus in the French Indian Ocean island of Reunion, according to the French Health Ministry.
<!-- TEXT BLOCK 2 -->The WHO team, which will leave Geneva on Wednesday, will visit Reunion, as well as Madagascar, Mauritius and the Seychelles to check control measures in place against the Chikungunya virus, said Fadela Chaib, spokeswoman for the health agency.
<!-- TEXT BLOCK 3 -->It was the first time officials have confirmed deaths related to this outbreak of the virus, which is usually not life-threatening but can cause muscle and joint pain, rash and fever. No vaccine has been identified.
<!-- TEXT BLOCK 4 -->There have been an estimated 110,000 cases of Chikungunya in Reunion since monitoring began after an outbreak last March. During the first week of February, nearby island countries started to report cases, including 1,255 in the Seychelles and 206 in Mauritius, WHO said, reports the AP.

Chikungunya in La R?union Island (France)
17 February 2006
Between 28 March 2005 and 12 February 2006, 1 722 cases of chikungunya have been notified by physicians from a sentinel network in La R?union, including 326 cases reported during the week 6 to 12 February. Estimations from a mathematical model indicate that 110 000 people may have been infected by chikungunya virus since March 2005 in La R?union, including 22 000 persons during the week 6 to 12 February. During the first week of February, other countries in the south west Indian Ocean have reported cases: Mauritius (206 cases) and the Seychelles (1 255 cases).
Because of the extensive outbreaks in the region, WHO is planning to send a team from the Regional Office for Africa (AFRO) and headquarters to assess the control measures under way. These include anti-vectoral activities; an extensive public health education campaign using mass media to sensitize the population about protective measures; and reinforcement of epidemiological surveillance and vectoral surveillance. The team will discuss a sub-regional strategy for surveillance and control of chikungunya and other arboviruses with national authorities. They will visit La R?union, Madagascar, Mauritius and coordinate with the AFRO vector control mission to the Seychelles.
Chikungunya, a viral disease, is transmitted to humans by infected mosquitoes, typically Aedes aegypti, although there may be other competent mosquito vectors. The name, chickungunya, comes from the Swahili for stooped walk, reflecting the physique of a person suffering from the disease. The disease has been described in Africa, South-East Asia, southern India and Pakistan. It occurs principally during the rainy season.
Chikungunya is rarely fatal. Symptoms appear between 4 and 7 days after the patient has been bitten by the infected mosquito. A high fever and headache occur, with significant pains in the joints (ankles, wrists) and can persist for several weeks. The main preventive measure is to stop the proliferation of mosquitoes by reducing their breeding grounds.

The exponential growth in cases began in December of 2005.
I have been reporting on this event since Mid January 2006.
The World Health Organization has not arrived.

There are over 110,000 official cases and over 200,000 un-official cases.
There are over 100 deaths.
The 100 deaths and 104,000 cases have all occured in the past 7 weeks.
The World Health Organization has not arrived.

<!-- ================ texte de l'article principal ================ -->http://babelfish.altavista.com/babe...ww.clicanoo.com/article.php?id_article=123666Last week the medical authorities which had cultivated ḻeuphemism a long time, announced 52 deaths which had with the chikungunya. Painful calculation. These figures were stopped at February 12. One would be aujourd?hui with 70 deaths ! That is to say at the very least 18 died in ten days, which makes all the same much for a disease, which to be qualified d?invalidante, always profits from the qualifier from benign. In d?autres terms, the chikungunya kills more and more. Impossible d?attribuer this decimation with a gust of ?morts subites? ! The fact is that the CHIK strikes without distinction all the classes d?âge. Babies, children, will quadras, old people, professional firemen and people without history. In less than two months, the chikungunya s?offre a fatal calculation higher than the road accidents. It will be necessary well to invest in the demoustication as much d?argent, if not more, that what l?on invests in the automatic radars and the statement computerized. What to consider with horror the lightness with which a certain local authority has fact l?impasse on these famous mosquitos during so a long time. What to consider with contempt the ridiculous ones polemize of certain members of Parliament to l?Assemblée national. Aujourd?hui certain Socialists claim to make the lesson with the UMP government. But the socialist governments failed as much than the others. And if the Kouchner minister, in his time, charged a certain pr. Brucker with chairing work d?une erudite commission on the risks induced by the emergent diseases, force is to note that anything n?a followed d?effet, whereas all known as on was l?épée of Damoclés which planed with the top of our heads. From 1986 to 2005, l?Aedes albopictus vector of so much d?arboviroses, thrived in all quietude on l?île of the Meeting. And this expensive, very dear Dr. Perrin, whose job east appears d?éviter the medical catastrophes, uses aujourd?hui his saliva to explain that the deaths d?enfants such as Dylan and Tricia are, in terms of percentages, negligible quantity...

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Collateral problem related to the chikungunya

<!-- [22 février 2006 - 07h27]-->[ February 22, 2006 ]

<!-- ================ titres des articles liés ================ -->What makes the mayor of Saint-Pierre?
Action or agitation?
What makes the laboratories?

<!-- ================ texte de l'article principal ================ -->Mister the Minister of l’Outre-Sea, the population of our department is seriously threatened since more d’un year of l’affection “chikungunya”. The local and metropolitan media are made l’écho d’une extremely alarming situation and which jusqu’à present, leaves our population in front of much d’incertitudes and of fears. For a few days and in front of ḻamplor of the problem, we have been invited to many meetings where l’on ensures us of the real concern of l’État. On the level of the professions of health that j’ai ḻhonnor to represent, like j’ai been able l’écrire with Mister the Minister for Health at the time of your recent passage, because of ḻalteration of their physical state, many professionals cannot assume any more their task in the totality of their field d’action even sometimes any more. Certain patients any more or with difficulty are not handled. In the same way, of the consultations, care, toilets or mobilizations cannot be completely assumed sometimes any more. If the situation continued with s’aggraver, we would be likely to find to us in front of a situation quickly even more alarming at the medical level. In the cases d’affections d’une lasted important and in front of the waiting periods of the services poured in the event of disease, certain professionals could also encounter considerable financial difficulties. To all this, come to be grafted d’autres considerations that you will allow me to describe here like scandalous. Lorsqu’une nobody is touched, the effects can be as sudden as striking down. In the event of displacement envisaged out of our department it is obviously completely impossible to be able to anticipate anything. If this situation prevails for any disease, you will allow me to say that in our case, it s’agit not of n’importe which disease. The consulted airline companies make state d’aucune ḏadaptation possibility opposite d’une situation also extraordinary only frightening. A passenger reached having spent often more than thousand euros thus quite simply loses the benefit of his ticket without any possibility of refunding or carryforward. Incredibly, only the travellers coming from metropolis for a voyage outward journey, can differ their flight from a few weeks. I allow myself d’attirer your attention on the fact that the overseas populations cannot indefinitely undergo this kind of pressures and these injustices without qu’un day a movement of revolt does not come to agitate them. We hope for all that you will be able to take measurements necessary to allow us d’être reassured on this point. I request from you d’agréer, Mister the Minister, l’expression of my high consideration.
