Machine Translation:

According to the daily newspaper Release, the Prime Minister would have been piqué by a mosquito at the time of his stay in l?île. ?Dominique de Villepin n?est not in very great form physique?, writing the newspaper. For several days, it has shown tiredness under bronzing. It is arisen with a lumbago of l?avion which brought back it l?île of the Meeting Monday. And as if that were not enough, it s?est made - as several of his/her collaborators - prick by mosquitos in open ground of the chikungunya. ?On will see well in four days... ? the chief of the government was ironical. ?C?est the risk of the métier? one of its close relations added.

DEATH TOLL FOR DISEASE-HIT REUNION HITS 93; QUARTER OF POPULATION AFFECTED

A mosquito-borne disease that has hit the French Indian Ocean island of Reunion has claimed 93 lives, and almost a quarter of the population has been affected, Health Minister Xavier Bertrand has said today.

The toll of 93 amounted to people whose death was directly or indirectly attributable to the disease, known as chikungunya, he said. A total of 186,000 people have fallen sick with the disease in the course of the epidemic, he said. Reunion has a population of 777,000. France has committed emergency health and economic aid worth 91 million euros (109 million dollars) to Reunion to help it fight the scourge. Cases have also been recorded in the nearby French island of Mayotte, as well as in the Indian Ocean islands of Madagascar, Mauritius and the Seychelles, and among a small number of Reunionnais arriving in mainland France. Chikungunya's name derives from a Swahili word meaning "that which bends up" because of its arthritic-type symptoms that leave victims stooped. Some 500 French troops have already been deployed in Reunion to help health workers spray mosquito breeding areas. Reunion is an ethnically diverse department of France which lies to the east of Madagascar, with an economy based on agriculture.

Chikungunya in Mayotte

CHIKUNGUNYA MAYOTTE - According to Xavier Bertrand, minister of Health and solidarities, since the beginning epidemic of chikungugnya appeared at the beginning of January in Mayotte, 2162 cases were officially declared. The epidemic of chikungugnya advances at the rate of a hundred of new cases a day. On Thursday, March 2nd, 2006, mister Xavier Bertrand, minister of Health and Solidarities met mister Mansour Kamardine, deputy of Mayotte to take stock of the situation on the epidemic of chikungugnya in the departmental group. The minister of Health and Solidarities said him that the total plan of conflict against the epidemic applies similarly in Mayotte than to the island of Meeting and that he was implemented at the same time.

On the occasion of this meeting, as the minister had pointed it out during his displacement on the island on January 31st, 2006, and as reminded of it the Prime minister during his displacement in Meeting on February 26th and 27th of this year, Xavier Bertrand reasserted the complete commitment of the Government in the conflict against the epidemic of chikungugnya.
<snip of lengthy report>
In urban zones, (where are represented the majority of the epidemics), the illness of the chikungugnya is passed on from man to man through mosquitoes of type Aedes notably (aedes aegypti, albopictus, polynesiensis). For the epidemic appeared to Meeting, mosquito suspected of being the vector is Aedes albopictus. It is a daytime vector with a peak of activity at the beginning and at the end of the day. In Mayotte the mosquito suspected of being the vector is Aedes aegypti. In natural environment, illness passes from the monkey to the monkey by means of mosquitoes Aedes furcifer and africanus. This pathology splits into Africa, into Southeast Asia and in the Indian subcontinent. In 2005, illness first touched Comoros, then island Maurice and Mayotte, and finally Meeting, attaining the French territory so for the first time. The epidemic of chikungugnya developed on exponential mode in Meeting in the course of the southern summer 2005-2006 and again attained Mayotte due to exchanges favoured between these two islands.
At the end of maintenance, the minister of Health and Solidarities confirmed that he will go to Mayotte next April once again.

(my note - The last part of this article is confusing. They mention man-to-man, and it appears they blame a different mosquito vector.)

Les premiers cas ont ?t? not?s d?but janvier. Mardi dernier, 62 malades avaient d?j?

HEALTH
The chikungunya attacks Mafate
The virus has been in the circus of Mafate for 2 months. At the beginning of week, 62 patients had already been listed. Nine islets of the circus cash 753 inhabitants, c?est approximately 10% of the population which is touched. A majority of the cases is recorded with Rock-Punt.

<!-- ================ texte de l'article principal ================ -->The Thomas are relieved. A helicopter of the gendarmerie flies over their small box drink some under Rock-Punt sheet (Mafate) and lands on a plate in overhangs. The Thomas have l?attendent for 6 a.m., yesterday morning. He is 9 a.m. 30 when l?appareil is posed. ?Mon father has the chikungunya. It suffers really much. One cannot leave it like that. One prefers to make it hospitalize with the CHD of Bellepierre?, indicate Joelle Marianne, by showing the bed where his/her father is lengthened, Barthélemy Thomas (81 years). ?Je thinks qu?il could be of return to him in a semaine?, note Siyana Dimitrova, doctor urgentist of Samu. Helped by the neighbors of the Thomas, two gendarmes of the group of gendarmerie of high mountain (PGHM) install the patient on a stretcher and transport it jusqu?? l?hélicoptère. Barthélemy Thomas fell sick it there ten days. It n?est not gone down in bottoms. C?est on the spot, with Rock-Punt, qu?il was contaminated. The circus n?est indeed more saved by the disease.
Piqués on the littoral
The first cases were noted at the beginning of January. Last Tuesday, 62 patients had been listed already by l?antenne medical based in the circus. Knowing that Mafate and its nine islets count 753 inhabitants, c?est thus nearly 10% of the population which was touched by the disease. Let us recall that the News, Aurère, Grand Place, islet with Malheur and islet with Bourse depends on the commune of the Possession. Marla, islets with the Orange trees, islet in Lataniers and Rock-Punt are on the territory of the commune of Saint-Paul. Forgotten of Mafate
The first patients were piqués at the time of stays accomplished on the littoral. They went up contaminated. An aubaine for l?Aedes albopictus which was always present in the circus. Consequently, l?enchaînement traditional of transmission of the virus s?est engaged. The mosquitos have piqué the sick people and transported the virus jusqu?? their next victims. What explains why people n?ayant not left Mafate fall sick. If isolated cases are announced to Aurère, islet with Malheur, islet with Bourse and Grand Places, ḻepidemy flames with islet with the Orange trees, islet in Lataniers and especially with Rock-Punt. About thirty patients were listed in this islet which counts a hundred d?habitants. Marianne Thomas, 47 years, was l?une to be struck first. ?Je fell sick into bottoms. J?ai hospitalized during one week with the CHD of Bellepierre. Then I am turned over at home to Rock-Punt, but always j?avais mal?, report it by showing the medical certificate confirming qu?elle is reached chikungunya. Since its return, it s?est never really restored. Yesterday, it was unable to rise. ?J?ai too badly with the hip and I n?ai more force in the mains?, explain it. It of course has l?hélicoptère which came to evacuate Barthélemy Thomas. It knew qu?un doctor was there, but says she, ?je n?ai not dared to ask qu?il comes me voir?. His/her brother, who contracted the virus it one month and half, lance bitterly : ?Dans each family there is at least a patient. But that ṉinteress not people of the littoral. One never speaks about Mafate. As always we are oubliés?.

No the massive demoustication
In the circus like elsewhere in l?île, the mosquito pricks indifferently young people and old. Two of the pupils of Celine Li Clouded Yao are sick since the beginning of the week. ?L?école n?a ever be démoustiqué? notice l?enseignante which has in its single class 14 pupils going of the nursery school with CM2. In fact, a demoustication indeed was carried out sick by Drass (regional direction of the medical and social businesses) Thursday, ?mais they passed only in the boxes where there were malades? people;, regret Joelle Thomas. Jean-Sebastien Dehecq, entomologist in Drass, justify this selective demoustication while explaining : ?Il is true that the mosquito is present everywhere in the circus. But qu?il n?a not of sick people to prick so much, it n?y has any reason to want s?en débarrasser?. It adds : ?De any way, it is illusory to believe that l?on will arrive there, the mosquito is there in its natural habitat and we do not n?allons especially démoustiquer the underwoods. In fact, we intervene as soon as possible as of qu?il has there a description of anybody sick so d?empêcher the development d?une pocket tank for the virus?. It n?y thus does not have massive d?action against the adult mosquitos and thus not d?épandage on a large chemical scale d?insecticide.
As for the fight against the larval lodgings, by and destruction waste disposal of the larvae, it seems chaotic. ?Les waste is not collected any more since three ans? note Céline Li Clouded Yao. The operating burnup (community of the communes of l?ouest) promised s?y to employ as from Monday. Remain the destruction of the larvae in the public schools and buildings. ?Nous démoustiqué all the schools depending on us before the last school re-entry. We do not proceed any more to new operations since according to the new protocol d?intervention set up by the prefecture, that concerns from now on the competence of Drass? estimate the service environment of the commune of the Possession. ?Oui we will treat the schools in Mafate, but we n?avons yet not established a calendrier? limits itself to saying the service environment of the commune of Saint-Paul. As for the mosquito, it continues to prick...

De Villepin at risk of illness after trip to epidemic isle
By Colin Randall in Paris
(Filed: 04/03/2006)
The French prime minister, Dominique de Villepin, has returned from the Indian Ocean island of R?union, wondering if he has fallen victim to the mosquito-borne disease, chikungunya.
<!--MPU STOPPED BY MEDIA --> Mr de Villepin flew back to Paris this week after visiting the French overseas d?partement, where he stressed his "solidarity" and announced ?60 million aid to fight a local epidemic of the disease.
<table align="right" border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" hspace="0" width="168"> <tbody><tr><td rowspan="2" width="8"> </td><td width="160"><center>
wfra04.jpg
</center></td></tr><tr><td class="caption"><center>Dominique de Villepin on the island of R?union</center></td></tr></tbody> </table> His trip lasted only 24 hours, but was long enough for the flamboyant, silver-haired premier to be bitten on the hand by a mosquito. He managed a cheerful smile as he told reporters of his bite. Wary, however, of an incubation period of a week or more, Mr de Villepin added: "We'll know in the next few days."
A quarter of R?union's 770,000 inhabitants have been infected - most of them in the past two months, although the earliest cases were detected a year ago.
Chikungunya sufferers usually recover after several days of fever, headaches, nausea and joint and bone pains, which can, in some cases, last for months. Deaths are not common, but 93 of the 186,000 people to have fallen ill on R?union have died. The island's tourism industry has been badly hit.

Far fewer cases have been reported in the nearby French island of Mayotte, and in the Seychelles, Madagascar and Mauritius.
A doctor on R?union said Mr de Villepin would be "very unlucky" to have caught chikungunya on such a short visit.
While the French premier awaits the outcome, he faces another headache - fending off criticism that his government was too slow to react to the health crisis in R?union.
The mosquito that spreads the disease, Aedes albopictus or Asian tiger mosquito, is prevalent in parts of the Mediterranean, and scientists cannot rule out the possibility of a European outbreak this summer.

Explications.

<!-- ================ titres des articles li?s ================ -->Mauvais coup

<!-- ================ texte de l'article principal ================ -->Le pr?fet a voulu jouer son va-tout ?transparence? hier matin devant la presse apr?s les critiques essuy?es par les diverses autorit?s. ?Les r?sultats ont ?t? connus hier soir (mardi, ndlr) vers 23 heures, insiste Laurent Cayrel, et nous vous les donnons d?s ce matin (hier, ndlr).? Cette fois, ce n?est donc pas la presse parisienne qui aura la primeur de l?information sur l??tude de s?ropr?valence command?e par Xavier Bertrand, ministre de la Sant?. Une ?tude ayant pour principal objectif de d?terminer la pr?valence (ou taux d?attaque) du virus dans la population r?unionnaise. Gr?ce ? cette enqu?te, on peut d?sormais ?valuer statistiquement combien de personnes ont ?t? touch?es par le virus et combien ont d?velopp? les signes cliniques de la maladie. La diff?rence entre les deux permettant de d?terminer le nombre de formes asymptomatiques, c?est-?-dire le nombre de porteurs sains, ceux qui ont contract? le virus sans d?velopper les signes cliniques.

Yesterday morning, the first official results of l?enquête of séroprévalence were made public. Study which shows that 19 % of the studied subjects have a positive serology for the virus of the chikungunya. This figure, extrapolated with the population réunionnaise, reveals that the asymptomatic forms (people reached by the virus but which does not develop clinical signs) are quasi non-existent. L?inquiétude gains the authorities which deduce qu?au from it worse from the scenarios, 80 % of the population risks d?être contaminated. Explanations.

A study having for main goal to determine the prevalence (or d?attaque rate) of the virus in the population réunionnaise. Thanks to this investigation, one can from now on evaluate statistically how many people were touched by the virus and how much developed the clinical signs of the disease. The difference between the two allowing to determine the number of asymptomatic forms, c?est-with-statement the number of operational carriers, those which contracted the virus without developing the clinical signs.
OPERATIONAL CARRIERS SE MAKE RARE
The first estimates of l?enquête realized by the clinical center ḏinvestigation of the Meeting near 567 pregnant women having had a taking away of blood between January 15 and February 15 2006 indicate that 109 d?entre they (that is to say 19 %) had a positive serology for the chikungunya. The serologies carried out by the national center of reference of the arboviroses of Lyon (CNR). If this rate of séroprévalence is extrapolated with the population réunionnaise (made up with the last census of 774 600 people), whatever l?âge and the sex, that would correspond to a little less than 150 000 infected people. However, l?institut national of medical day before (InVs), in its epidemiologic bulletin of February 19, evoked the number of people clinically reached with 157 000. ?Cette coherence - results (150 000 and 157 000), note - us has surpris?, explain Pr Antoine Flahault, epidemiologist and president of the national cell of coordination of research on the chikungunya. Surprised since these estimates indicate that ?les asymptomatic forms, if they exist, are into weak proportion? in the population réunionnaise.
NEED FOR FIGHT ANTI-VECTORIELLE
Results which come to corroborate those carried out last month by the laboratory of virology of the GHSR, within the personnel of the urgencies of Saint-Pierre : only one person out of 115 was an asymptomatic carrier of the chikungunya. ?On tended to think the contraire?, specify ḻepidemiologist. The prefect draws some then from the alarming conclusions : ?Cela wants to say that 80% of the population réunionnaise risk still to contract the chikungunya.? Indeed, if the percentage of operational carrier in the population is quasi null, that means that almost all the population is likely d?être contaminated and to develop the symptoms of the disease. The scientific literature reports that this epidemic can reach, in the most extreme cases, jusqu?? 90% d?une population, if no anti-vectorial fight n?est carried out. An observation carried out in several countries ḏAfric. In Thailand, which knew an epidemic of CHIK in years 95, c?est 35 % of the population which was touched. A country which had known with l?époque developing in time the means of fighting the mosquito vector. ?Ce which underlines the need for the anti-vectorial fight and the protection of most fragile, underlines Laurent Cayrel. One cannot count on the providence.? And the prefect d?insister on the two principal axes d?action : the mobilization of the population and the demoustication.

Two other launched studies of séroprévalence

An analysis of former sérothèques (2000-2005) is in hand in order to determine the possible presence of l?infection on l?île before ḻepidemy. The results are awaited during March.

A survey into a sample representative of the population and a questionnaire on the asymptomatic forms, the recourse to the care and the prevention of the individuals will be carried out between March and April.

- a reliable investigation ?
Do extrapolations and calculations... these first results have a scientific reliability ? Some flat are to be brought to this investigation of séroprévalence. All d?abord, it should be known that the rate of prevalence (19%) n?a not calculated about the totality of the 567 supposed subjects being studied. 200 serologies indeed remain to be realized. ?Les final results should not be much modifiés?, indicate Antoine Flahault however. Moreover, l?échantillon chosen, s?il were initially to be carried out on 1 000 people instead of the 567, n?est not representative of the population since the taking away were carried out only on pregnant women in the four corners of l?île. ?C?est a tool largely used which enables us to d?avoir a good representativeness of the population adulte?, ensure Jean-Paul Boutin, doctor at the department ḏepidemiology and of public health of l?Institut of tropical medicine of the health service of armies (IMTSSA), ?L?enquête does not rest on a representative population but gives us a fiable? estimate;, still affirm Patrick Herve, director of the regional delegation to research and technology (DRRT). If l?on is based on the results close between l?enquête to séroprévalence and the epidemiologic bulletin of February 19 to establish that 80% of the population risk d?être contaminated, that means qu?on has interest so that the figures revealed by l?InVs are exact. Out, one knows it, from the very start of ḻepidemy, there was a broad misfiring in the calculation of the number of patients. To final, one can say that these figures are only preliminaries. ?Il will be appropriate to reiterate this investigation at the beginning of l?hiver (June 2006) to refine these prévisions?, d?ailleurs the authorities specify.

Re: 80% of the population are likely to contract the chikungunya

It appears that there are very few if any asymptomatic cases.

It also looks like 80% - 100% could become infected.

Yet WHO General Lee Joon-Wook says it is ok to travel to La Reunion.

There are many words that I could use to address Lee Joon-Wook, non of which are flattering.

This just sucks.

Re: La R?union Island - Bring in, French & English Infos Please

I called the hotel Best Western Le Saint Denis @ 262-262-218020 and spoke to the desk manager Henry at 8:30am EST

He told me:

There is a big chikungunya problem.
More than 200,000 are infected.
This hotel, which in the capital, has 83 rooms booked for tonight out of 122 total rooms.
This is mostly a businessman's hotel, there are 0 tourists there.
Bring mosquito spray.
They are open and still taking reservations.
Everyone is concerned about the infections.
He is using mosquito spray in his home.

A little measurement MR. MAUSSY and especially more courteous may be you show learn how to read give me your reference biblio to L ' following assertion of the cases of West Nile exist in the island and do not repetez me your FAQ I showed you simply that on serologies one could not affirm that a disease exists but contrary to you I m ' inform and I répete not stupidly counters them truths of certain Net surfers or certain FAQ and in crises measurement causes solution and especially L ' experiment of some which make authority on the matter (of which certain Professors of medicine)méritent a listening and especially us would allow to call in question certain assertions. you m ' write:Je warn you, you are likely to make cauchemards because you will have the impression to have them ALL!!! I reassure you in ten years D ' studies medical I N ' somatisé any pathology but J ' estimates that the action to be taken qu one imposes to us as a doctor generalist is weak..... and I inform you that J ' was the first doctor of L ' island to seek cases of dengue concommittente to L ' epidemy of chik to the meeting but to have the certainty one would have needed of it qu ' one takes into account my declarations and that L ' one convenes these patients to make a viral research D ' insulation in a P4 laboratory what N ' ever was carried out.

You write "can yourselves perhaps read and peel a scientific literature of 10.000 pages, but apparament 10 lines of text on a forum that has evil to go up to the brain!!!"........mais it is sure that it is more interessant for you of reading articles of press which do not bring anything to the debate... It is sure that within sight of the level of certain journalists, you can at least include/understand what they write. I also announce you that since the beginning of this forum, you never answered directly my interrogations except in an aggressive way but it is not serious, I am not more easily deceived of your intentions and I regret to inform you that you are not used of anything with the dialogue and the debate. You are only one agitator just to be good to sign petitions which will finish in a basket and with appeller to organize kabars (what is extremely likely to make propagate this epidemic); it is well beautiful to say nik chik of its office to Paris but when it is a question of then including/understanding on the ground the interventions which are carried out here to the Meeting, there, there is nobody and especially not you! I ask you a question: when a patient comes to see me, how can I have the certainty which it is well infected by the chik????

However, since the beginning, and it is what I said to you in my intervention, of the declarations of patients reached is saying by the chik are sent to the DRASS without any formal proof. You do not have of cease since the beginning to attack on this forum people who do not think like you to make them flee. You have a selective reading unfortunately and we do not certainly have the same readings..... No comment besides on this forum on the bond that I had sent of the INSERM and the Pasteur Institute "We let us be equal in front of the dengue", however rich person of lesson for the future of our island and for finally proposing a therapeutic solution with réunionnais. It is sure that it is to better read the declarations of the Minister for Health and to comment on them. With similar processes, you unfortunately put a bandage on a wooden leg. But, contrary to some which leave this forum, I will continue to read you because I am not sectarian and that it is not given to everyone of reading 10.000 pages (I quote you)!! http://www.chikungunya.net/epidemie/epidemie.htm

TANANARIVE, March 13 (Xinhuanet) -- An eastern island of Madagascar has been hit by Dengue fever, with dozens of people being hospitalized each day, local health officials reported Monday.
A medic on the island of Sainte-Marie said between 30 and 50 people were being sent to the only hospital on the island each dayand that the medical services there could not cope with the numberof new cases turning up.
According to the Health Ministry, a four-member medical team had been sent to the island to conduct an investigation. Authorities had also begun to spray insecticide to kill mosquitoes, which carry the virus.
Dengue is an acute, infectious tropical disease caused by an arbovirus which is transmitted by mosquitoes, and is characterizedby high fever, rashes, headaches, and severe muscular and joint pain. With only seven medics serving 20,700 inhabitants on the island,Sainte-Marie lacks the resources to fight the epidemic or ensure enough sanitation. Enditem

Re: Dengue fever hits east Madagascar island

This is Chikungunya, or something that presents like Chikungunya.

In case you were wondering, H5N1 presents like Chikungunya.

Re: Dengue fever hits east Madagascar island

Re: Dengue fever hits east Madagascar island

This is getting ridiculous.

First, they try to hide H5N1 as Chikungunya, now that Chikungunya is getting out of control they are trying to hide Chikungunya as dengue.
