An infection of the brain caused by Naegleria fowleri
A 10-year-old girl from Malappuram district has died of primary amoebic meningoencephalitis, an infection of the brain caused by Naegleria fowleri, commonly referred to as the ?brain-eating amoeba?.

Her name was given as Aishwarya, daughter of Surendran and Preethi of Aripra near Perinthalmanna in the district. Aishwarya was admitted to MES Medical College Hospital, Perinthalmanna, on Wednesday with high fever.

Hospital sources said she died on Thursday evening while being taken to a private hospital in Kochi for further treatment. The infection was diagnosed after her cerebrospinal fluid was sent for lab tests. A similar case had been earlier reported from Alappuzha.

fever, neck stiffness and meningitis was admitted
in MCH Kozhikode on 1st May 2019. District RRT
investigated the outbreak. House to House survey
done. Blood and CSF sample were collected and
sent to ICMR Alapuzha were positive for West
Nile (IgM ELISA). Entomological survey done
(HI 13.9; CI 12.3; BI 15.9). IRS and anti-larval
measures were carried out in the affected area.
Case discharged on 9th May 2019. Health
education given regarding personal protection
measures.

Malappuram: The viral infection in the Perinthalmanna has resulted in the death of the girl. The deceased have been identified as Sabina Parvin (35) from Kurnool in Andhra Pradesh. Blood sample to verify virus has been sent to the Virgoji Institute of Alappuzha. Aligarh Muslim University, Malappuram Center, Assistant Professor Dr. Said is Hayath Basha's wife. There is a one-half-year-old daughter.
