Introduction:
Kazakhstan's Minister of Health informed the media on the 9th that the incidence of pneumonia in China increased by 55.4% in the first half of this year compared with the same period in 2019, and a total of 98,546 cases were diagnosed. A total of 1772 people died of pneumonia in the first half of the year, and 628 people died in June alone. Some of these pneumonia patients are common pneumonia, and the cause of infection in other patients is not yet clear. Rogerson, an immunology expert in the country, pointed out that in addition to new coronary pneumonia, Kazakhstan is epidemic with another pneumonia epidemic whose cause is not yet clear. No COVID-19 virus has been detected in patients with this type of pneumonia. "Although the cause cannot be confirmed 100%, 99.999% is still a coronavirus."

> ... Recall, according to the latest data, in Kazakhstan for the first half of 2020
> in 1772 people fell ill with pneumonia.

Sharon's post #85 , quoting the Chinese embassy to Kazakhstan :

> pneumonia caused 1772 deaths

so the Chinese mistranslated "fell ill" to "died" ?

-----------edit----------------
yearly deaths in Kazakhstan from pneumonia (J12-J18) 2013,2014,2015,2017 :

3039,3230,4100,----,3607
~80% of these are J18, organism unspecified and ~15% are J15, bacterial pneumonia

1772 pneumonia deaths in Kazakhstan in the first half of 2020 would be normal

"Regarding the above mentions "unknown pneumonia" news, Fu Hua Univerity professor Fu Hua stated that, under the premise that everyhting is not clear, it is impossible to judge whether there is a new virus in Kazakhstan, whether the new coronvirus is mutated, or whether it will break out. However, the exposure of these phenomena will make our current epidemic prevention work more difficult. At present, it is important to strengthen our border quarantine, pay close attention to the local situation, strengthen international cooperation, and strictly prevent the introduction into China."

"Since mid-Jun, Hong Kong has had no new confirmed cases of new pneumonia for 21 consecutive days, but the situation has recently changed. Especilly on the 9th, 42 new cases of new pneumonia were diagnosed in Hong Kong on that day, of which 34 were local cases. This was the day when Hong Kong had the most new local cases since the outbreak in January. The most concerned thing is that cases of unknown origin continue to appear. In the past week, a total of 12 cases of unknown origin spread over Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories. This shows that invisible transmission chains have been hidden in Hong Kong.
...
He Bailang also said that the virus is constantly changing. Some studies have shown that after March, the position of one of the proteins has changed. After the virus structure has changed a new virus species has become popular worldwide. The virus can reproduce in the upper respiratory tract of patients. The number and rate of reproduction are accelerating, so the amount of virus detected in the upper respiratory tract of patients recently is significantly higher than that of three months ago. The mutation of the virus also caused this round of epidemic to be more severe than before.

The reporter noted that on the 9th of Hong Kong, 42 new cases of new pneumonia were diagnosed, of which 8 were imported cases, and 5 of them were from Kazakhstan.

The Chinese Embassy in Kazakhstan issued an announcement on the 9th that Chinese citizens in Kazakhstan had died of unknown pneumonia. The embassy reminded Chinese citizens to effectively raise awareness of prevention and reduce the risk of infection.
As of the 9th, Kazakhstan had a total of 53,021 newly diagnosed patients with new coronary pneumonia, 31,277 cured, and 264 died. Kazakh media reported on the 7th that 28,000 people in Kazakhstan are currently hospitalized for severe pneumonia, and 330 of them are in critical condition, but their new coronavirus test results are negative.

Sadly, I do not know if this situation is a China misinformation campaign against Kazakhstan since April or a real threat.

For now we are posting these pneumonia articles to the Kazakhstan coronavirus thread since this makes the most logical sense. If the developing facts lead to something else we will separate into a new thread.

Q about reports of severe pneumonias in Kazakhstan. There has been a surge in #covid19 cases, says
@DrMikeRyan

We're looking at the actual testing and the quality of the testing to make sure that there haven't been false negative tests for some of those other pneumonias."

is also working with authorities in Kazakhstan to review x-rays and "look at the patterns of the pneumonias to make sure that they're consistent with #covid19". But: “While we believe that many of these cases will be diagnosed as #COVID19, we keep an open mind."

presumably "in Kazakhstan" , not "in China"

> A total of 1772 people died of pneumonia in the first half of the year,

from the WHO-data I conclude that this is normal. But they say it's 50% more
than in 2019, so for some reason 2019 was very mild [?]

> and 628 people died in June alone

that's ~400 more than expected, ~200 are official COVID, additional COVID-related-deaths
were seen elsewhere, but mostly from cardiovascular reasons (NYC)

but why the increase just now ?

what ? "a coronavirus" ? not "the coronavirus" ? and why 99.999% ?

https://www.scmp.com/news/world/rus...akhstan-health-ministry-rejects-chinese-claim
According to Russian news agency Sputnik News, Rafail Rosenson, an immunologist from
Astana Medical University, said most of the cases should be Covid-19
“It is impossible to say 100 per cent, but 99.99 per cent they were caused by the coronavirus.
Because in the past there have never been community-acquired viral pneumonias in June,” the doctor said.

### the concern is, that it's related to COVID, triggered by COVID,, but ir is not just COVID

good !
So, Kazakhstan has actual numbers of pneumonia deaths and probably
deaths from all causes. Per half-years at least, maybe by quartals, or -as usual- by month.
Especially, how did it go in Pavlodar ?

----------------------------------------

> China misinformation campaign a

no, the numbers were correctly quoted and are confirmed. They may have overinterpreted it.
But IMO it's wrong by Kazakhstan to just say "fake news" without clarifying about the numbers
or their interpretation.

OK -- rereading the articles -- it seems that Kazakhstan meant that this it's probably all COVID, although
many cases are not confirmed or not even tested , and thus are classified as "pneumonia, unclear origin" .

While apparently China (and I) first had misinterpreted that wording.

Slightly different article https://www.tellerreport.com/news/2...fied-pneumonia-in-the-country.SJLOudiSJw.html
"On the 9th, Chinese media quoted Kazakh media reports that a kind of unknown pneumonia with a high fatality rate is prevalent in Kazakhstan. As early as June 29th, Kazakh immunology expert Rafael Rogerson said in an interview with the national media that in addition to the new coronary pneumonia epidemic, the cause of another type of pneumonia that is currently circulating is not clear. No COVID-19 virus has been detected in patients with this type of pneumonia. "The reason cannot be confirmed 100%, but 99.999% is still a new corona virus," Rogerson said."

https://www.zakon.kz/5031511-tokaev-...ituatsiya.html

"In the first half of 2020, cases with pneumonia were recorded - 98,546. In 2019, there were 63,436 cases, or 55.4% growth. These figures are officially automatically raised from each medical organization, there are such calculations," the minister replied.
According to him, in the first half of the year 1772 Kazakhstanis died from pneumonia. For the same period in 2019, 1780 deaths from the disease were recorded.
“This is a very large indicator. With a minus sign,” the president said.
Choi also cited data that in June 2020 the number of registered deaths from pneumonia increased by 2.3 times and amounted to 628 cases, in June last year there were 274 such cases.
The efforts of the Ministry of Health should be directed to pneumonia. Look at what is being done, the president commented.
Kasym-Zhomart Kemelevich, we monitor them. Given this pneumonia, all reserve beds are deployed. Because we have half of all the patients who are now - they are with pneumonia, unspecified [type - ed.]. We take this into account, including in the need for beds, and in ventilation machines, the minister explained.

The head of state called the current situation an emergency. And he noted that we must admit that the mortality from it is very high.
"The mortality rate is high from pneumonia, yes. Only from July 1 to July 8, 2020, 56 809 cases of pneumonia were registered. That is, there is a sharp increase in a week," Tsoi admitted.
"What kind of pneumonia is this? What is its nature?" Tokaev asked.
Here inside we laid them out. There are viral pneumonia here - it's 7348, bacterial - 9759, these are the usual pneumonia. And there are unspecified viral pneumonias, which now have similar currents with coronavirus infection - this is 39,702, - said Tsoi.

“You should now direct your efforts not only to the coronavirus itself, but also to the concomitant diseases, which I said in my statement - this is pneumonia. It is impossible to close our eyes or somehow try to obscure this problem. People are dying. They’re very ill, ”summed up Kasym-Zhomart Tokaev.
