Third case of COVID-19 identified in Ottawa County




Dear Ottawa County Residents,

The Ottawa County Health Department received notification today confirming a third positive case of COVID-19 in the county. We are working closely with the Kansas Department of Health and Environment during this time.


The individual is currently maintaining in-home isolation and is stable. The Ottawa County Health Department has identified all contacts and will monitor for fever and respiratory symptoms. No further information will be given on the patient.

Shawnee County sees third COVID-19 death; Nichols is made incident commander

Shawnee County has recorded its third death from the COVID-19 virus, health department director Linda Ochs said at Monday’s county commission meeting.

Also at that meeting, commissioners voted 3-0 to appoint emergency management director Dusty Nichols to replace Ochs as incident commander of the county’s COVID-19 response team.

The move will free up Ochs to focus more on her department, Nichols told commissioners.

“Their staff is getting pretty overwhelmed with things,” he said.

Nichols quipped that he was willing to accept “the decontaminated and heavily disinfected baton” from Ochs, who will remain with the COVID-19 response team as its operations section chief.

Ochs told Commissioners Bill Riphahn, Kevin Cook and Aaron Mays Monday that the county’s number of confirmed COVID-19 cases had risen to 40. That total had been 38 on Sunday.

Thirty-three of those patients were still receiving treatment while four had recovered and three had died, Ochs said.

She said 24 people in Shawnee County were awaiting results of testing for COVID-19 while 709 had tested negative and 100 were being monitored for the potential presence of the virus.

Ochs said the actual number of people being tested might be higher, as private labs are doing most COVID-19 testing in Kansas and sometimes the health department doesn’t learn someone is being tested until it receives the results.

Franklin County announces 10th COVID-19 case

Franklin County Health Department announced the 10th positive case of COVID-19 in the county over the weekend.

The individual is a woman in her 50s. She is a family member of a previous positive Franklin County test. Those who are thought to have had close interaction with her have been contacted by the Franklin County Health Department and given instructions regarding quarantine.

“Positive cases will continue to multiply in Franklin County,” health department officials said. “Please continue to be diligent and take all precautions to protect yourself and our most vulnerable population. If you feel ill, please reach out to your healthcare provider before arriving at their office.”

The county also reported one person has recovered from COVID-19 so far.

Second Case of COVID-19 Identified in Republic County

Republic County Health Department announced Monday, April 6th the second case of COVID-19 in Republic County. Testing sent to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment's Laboratories identified the positive case.

The case involves a female in her 60s with no travel history and has no underlying health conditions. Republic County Health Department is working to identify any close contacts of the individual and those who were exposed will be contacted as soon as possible. They will be monitoring these contacts for fever and respiratory symptoms. No further information about the patient will be released.

The Geary County Health Department said the newest patient is a 44-year-old man who is currently receiving medical treatment at Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan.

Virus cluster found at Kansas rehabilitation center

WICHITA, Kan. (AP/KCTV) — A cluster of COVID-19 cases have been found at a rehabilitation center in Kansas City, Kansas where three people have died.

On Monday, April 6, the Unified Government said there are 26 total cases at the Riverbend Post Acute Rehabilitation Center in Kansas City, Kansas and three people have died.

On Friday, April 4, 17 residents and two staff members had tested positive for the virus. Six of those 17 residents at the center had been hospitalized, said Dr. Allen Greiner, chief medical officer with the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas.

The facility has 135 residents.

Stormont asks staff to make their own masks to comply with CDC recommendation

In order to adhere to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommendation, Stormont Vail Health is requiring everyone working in its hospital to wear a face mask. However, many workers will have to bring their own masks from home because there aren’t enough supplies on hand.

Stormont staff were notified of the change in an email Friday, according to documents distributed to staff members and obtained by The Topeka Capital-Journal. The requirement goes into effect Tuesday.

According to those documents and additional correspondence with Stormont Vail public relations specialist Matt Lara, the requirement is in line with a recommendation issued last week by the CDC. The CDC is recommending the use of cloth face coverings in public settings to slow the spread of COVID-19.

Stormont staff involved in face-to-face patient care will be provided hospital-approved personal protective equipment, Lara said. However, all other staff members, visitors and patients are being asked to wear store-bought or homemade masks.

Denise Gomez, whose daughter is a hospital technician at Stormont, said the requirement does give her some comfort, but Gomez thinks the hospital was slow to react.

“Of course it gives me comfort knowing she’s going to be a little bit more protected, but who knows what could have happened up until then,” Gomez said.

Her daughter had been screening patients for weeks without a mask. Now, she is trying to teach herself how to sew one.

“When I talked to her today, they — her and her mother-in-law — were trying to make them,” Gomez said. “I don’t know how successful they’ve been or how protective they will be. ... If you just put a piece of material over your face, is that enough?”

Lee Norman, secretary of the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, said in news briefing Friday that homemade cloth masks do little to stop the spread of the coronavirus, as microscopic respiratory droplets from coughs and sneezes can still pass through the material.

However, Norman said, wearing homemade cloth masks in public may encourage people to keep their distance.

“You’re less likely to get up close to somebody that’s wearing a mask,” Norman said. “It’s just part of a basic belief set, which is that person is best avoided. And it’s thought that it actually improves social distancing.

22 new cases of COVID-19, 1 additional death reported in Johnson County, Kansas

OLATHE, Kan. —
The Johnson County Department of Health and Environment said Wednesday morning the county added 22 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and one more person has died from coronavirus-related ailments.

The county said there are now 239 confirmed cases in Johnson County and 11 deaths in the county. The county also said there have been 1,878 negative tests in the county, which is an increase of 20 from Tuesday’s numbers.


The county said seven people have died in the 80-89 age group, three in the 70-79 age group and one person has died in the 40-40 age group.

Health officials have yet to list how many people have recovered from COVID-19 in Johnson County.

As COVID-19 hits some Kansas nursing homes, one official says more needs to be done

TOPEKA, Kan. -- Kansas has stepped up nursing home inspections after four elderly patients died in two major COVID-19 outbreaks this week.

But a state official says more needs to be done.

“All our focus right now is on that issue of infection control,” said Laura Howard, secretary of the Kansas Department of Aging and Disability Services.

Howard said state and federal inspectors are visiting long-term care facilities considered at high risk of infection, including the state’s five nursing homes owned by Life Care Center. The Tennessee-based company's nursing homes have had a series of deadly outbreaks from the virus.

“We are going into facilities making sure they understand” how to stop the spread of the virus, Howard said.

Federal nursing home operating guidelines, released last week, are also getting tough.

According to federal officials, all nursing home staff should wear masks. The guidelines even recommend that residents wear a mask when interacting with staff. If there aren’t enough masks for residents, than the resident should use their hands to block their face when staff approach them, according to the guidelines.

Howard said the best way to stay ahead of the virus is to do more testing of both staff and residents.

“Part of the challenge we are facing not just in nursing homes but elsewhere is the lack of testing early on,” Howard said.

“In an ideal world, we would have the ability to do more rapid testing, the ability in the case of possible staff exposure to test a number of people quickly not just when an outbreak happens.”

With more testing, infected people can be quickly isolated. Howard hopes more tests will become available in the next couple of weeks so nursing homes can start using them more regularly.

Johnson County isn’t waiting for the state. It’s purchased 750 COVID-19 tests, and by next week will be using them at nursing homes.

More COVID-19 deaths reported in Kansas overnight, including two at KCK rehab facility

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — As of Wednesday at 11:45 a.m., KDHE has reported 900 cases of COVID-19 in Kansas, which includes 27 deaths within the state.

These numbers include the 223 patients within the state who are currently in the hospital being treated for the virus.

For most people, the virus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia, and death.

Johnson County, Kansas

Officials in Johnson County confirmed Wednesday morning that another resident has died due to complications with COVID-19, bringing the total number of deaths in the county to 11, up one from Tuesday.

While health officials did not release many details about the patient, they did say the individual was in their 80s.

Officials with Jackson County, Johnson County, Kansas, Wyandotte County and the City of Kansas City are currently under a “stay-at-home” order until April 24. It directs residents to stay at home except for essential needs.

Here is a list of what counts as essential activities and essential businesses during stay-at home order

Health officials in Johnson County ask that you refrain from visiting the ER during this time for mild illness. They suggest isolating at home and away from family for at least seven days or for 72 hours after symptoms are gone.

If you do have severe symptoms such as fever, cough, shortness of breath they want you to call your doctor.

Wyandotte County

Wyandotte County health officials are now reporting that two more residents have died, bringing to total of death in their county to 12.

As of Wednesday morning, Wyandotte County has 228 confirmed cases with 56 patients hospitalized.

Health officials in the county said two more patients at Riverbend Post-Acute Rehabilitation in Kansas City, Kansas died of the virus. There are now seven residents are in the hospital battling the virus and eight staff members and 48 total residents also tested positive for the virus.

The Unified Government of Wyandotte County launched a website that allows people who think they are sick with the coronavirus to self-report their symptoms.


The UG also launched an interactive dashboard that allows the public to track the progress of COVID-19 in Wyandotte County.

Health officials in Wyandotte and Johnson counties reported additional deaths Wednesday related to the new coronavirus.

Wyandotte County health officials reported two new deaths related to COVID-19 early Wednesday morning, bringing their total to 12. Johnson County officials reported 11 total deaths after announcing one more victim since Tuesday.

Johnson County now reports 239 confirmed positive cases of COVID-19 with an additional 1,878 tests coming back negative. Wyandotte County is reporting 219 cases; 72 of the individuals confirmed to have the virus are hospitalized.

Four of the deaths in Wyandotte County are from Riverbend Post Acute Rehabilitation at 7850 Freeman Avenue. As of Tuesday, there were 37 confirmed cases of COVID-19 linked to the rehabilitation health care facility, including four employees. The rest are residents, local health officials said Tuesday.

Local health officials announced Tuesday that 38 Douglas County residents have tested positive for COVID-19 since the pandemic began, an increase of two from the previous day.

Additionally, LMH Health announced that all patients, visitors and employees must wear masks within the hospital, and that visitors should provide their own cloth masks in order to preserve personal protective equipment for patients and staff. On Monday, Lawrence-Douglas County Public Health noted that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention began recommending that everyone wear cloth face coverings in public as part of an effort to reduce the number of cases.

In Douglas County, there are 23 cases believed to have been contracted through travel, eight from local transmission and six from contact with someone with a positive case. One case is still under investigation for type of transmission.

The 38 local cases involve two people in their late teens, 15 people in their 20s, 10 people in their 30s, six people in their 40s, two people in their 50s, one person in his or her 60s, one person in his or her 70s and one person who is over the age of 80, according to a news release Tuesday afternoon. Of those cases, 21 are men and 17 are women, the health department said.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment announced that, as of 11 a.m. Tuesday, a total of 900 Kansas residents had tested positive for the new coronavirus, including 27 deaths as a result of the disease.

KDHE’s online map noted that 843 Douglas County residents have been tested for the disease so far. The county’s testing rate per 1,000 people was 6.9, the third highest in the state.

A daily update from LMH Health announced that, as of 8 a.m. Tuesday, there was one patient at Lawrence’s hospital with COVID-19 and five others who were under investigation for the virus.

LMH Health had collected 714 COVID-19 specimens total as of Tuesday, and 34 of those specimens had tested positive for the virus. On Monday alone, LMH Health collected 34 specimens.

The CDC has instructions on how to make a cloth mask with a piece of cloth and two rubber bands on its website. LMH Health also is seeking the help of local seamstresses to make cloth masks. Sewing instructions are available on the hospital’s website.

Second case of presumptive-positive COVID-19 identified in Rooks County

Rooks County Health Department is confirming the second presumptive-positive case of COVID-19 in Rooks County.

The possible case was identified today with testing sent to QUEST Diagnostic on April 6.

QUEST Diagnostic, which is approved by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to perform COVID-19 testing, found presumptive-positive results Tuesday afternoon.

These results will be verified by the CDC lab and will be treated as positive pending confirmation.

The case is in Rooks County and the patient is currently in-home isolation, following the guidance of the CDC.

The case is not travel related.

Rooks County Health Department continues to work with the local partners and providers and KDHE to identify and contact people who may have come into contact with the individual while infectious and will monitor them for fever and respiratory symptoms.

No further information about the patient will be released.
