Fourth staff member, first inmate at Lansing Correctional Facility test positive for COVID-19



TOPEKA, Kan. (KWCH) Saturday, April 4, 2020

The Kansas Department of Corrections announced Saturday that a fourth staff member and an inmate at the Lansing Correctional Facility have tested positive for COVID-19.

The staff member is a man over the age of 20 and the inmate is a man over the age 50. No other information will be released about the patients.

As with the cases on March 31, the KDOC has been in consultation with officials from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment on next steps to address these circumstances. Additional steps taken today include:

• Reduced movement of residents so that they will remain in their units, but are not locked down in cells

• Necessary movement to recreation or jobs will occur primarily in groups, or cohorts, from the same unit

• Staffing has been modified due to increased absences

“The additional steps today illustrate our continued effort to follow all guidelines issued by public health officials,” Zmuda said. “We appreciate the continued support and guidance of KDHE and Governor Laura Kelly, as we conduct our work in these challenging times.”

4-4-20 DAILY RILEY COUNTY CORONAVIRUS RESPONSE UPDATE

RILEY COUNTY, KS – April 4, 2020) There are currently eleven (11) positive cases of coronavirus in Riley County. There are no positive Riley County patients being treated at Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan at this time. The two (2) patients who were hospitalized have been released to continue recovery in isolation at their homes. There are 28 tests pending and 22 additional people who are being monitored by the Riley County Health Department (RCHD).

All of the positive cases in Riley County are still associated with travel outside of the community.

One of the most recent cases, which is travel related, is a student living on campus at Kansas State University. The patient has been in isolation in the Jardine Apartments on the Manhattan campus since March 23 when that person notified K-State health staff of their symptoms.

The university acted immediately when learning of this information, and under strict protocols, moved the individual to isolate in Jardine. For a few days prior to that, the person had self-quarantined in a suite-style Marlatt residence hall room with a private bathroom after returning from out-of-state. No other residents were in the suite during this time.

Lafene Health Center and Riley County Health Department acted quickly and have followed protocols aimed at preventing the spread of the virus and protecting the community. Lafene Health Center and other K-State staff have been communicating with the person on a consistent basis and have initiated contact tracing.

“K-State is taking all of the necessary steps to preserve safety for their staff and students,” said Local Health Officer Julie Gibbs. “They took action early, kept the student in isolation, and continue to follow guidelines from the Riley County Health Department and the CDC.”

Today, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released updated advice about the wearing of cloth masks in areas where COVID-19 has reached widespread community transmission. Instructions for making and wearing cloth masks is available on the CDC website at https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/index.html.

The 4:15 p.m. daily video updates will now be held virtually, and will continue to be broadcast on Facebook Live.

Anyone experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 such as fever, shortness of breath, or difficulty breathing, should call a medical professional immediately. A screening hotline staffed by medical personnel is available every day from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. to provide guidance for anyone who has symptoms. The screening hotline number is 785-323-6400.

Jewell County has postive case

KDHE has updated the positive COVID-19 cases for Kansas today and the state total is up to 698 cases. This is another 78-case increase from yesterday. The cases for our North Central Kansas Region have increased to 14 with 7 counties involved. Jewell County is now on the map and cases have increased to 2 in Osborne and Ottawa Counties, and Saline County’s number was listed as 5.

Jewell County Reports First COVID-19 Case

The Jewell County Health Department received notification confirming our first case of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Jewell County.

The case involves a resident of Jewell County. The individual is currently maintaining in-home isolation and is stable. Jewell County Health Department is working to identify any close contacts of the individual and those who were exposed will be contacted as soon as possible. We will be monitoring these contacts for fever and respiratory symptoms. No further information about the patient will be released.

Fifth Confirmed COVID-19 Case in Saline County

A fifth COVID-19 Coronavirus case has been confirmed in Saline County.

According to the Saline County Health Department, they have been notified of one additional positive COVID-19 case in a Saline County resident. The case involves a female in her 20s who has recent travel to a hotspot area in the U.S. She is isolated at home.

This additional case brings the total to five in Saline County. At 11 am KDHE reported a total of 698 cases in Kansas.

FEMA has delivered Kansas’ portion of the Strategic National Stockpile and the Kansas Division of Emergency Management will coordinate the distribution of these critical resources for medical facilities and first responders to all 105 counties.

Saline County continues to receive reports of alleged non-compliance with the Statewide Stay-at-Home order. Alleged violations can be reported through our online submission form at www.saline.org<http://www.saline.org/.

Third COVID-19 case reported in Pott Co.; related to Riley Co.

Pottawatomie Co., KS, April 3 -- A third confirmed case of COVID-19 has been reported in Pottawatomie County, according to the daily community report from Crystal Malchose, Pott. Co. Public Information Officer.

However, she noted, "the most recent one was inadvertently reported as a Riley County resident" and "is related to a positive case in Riley County."

First Case of COVID-19 Identified in Republic County

Republic County Health Department announced on Saturday, April 4th the first case of COVID-19 in Republic County. Testing sent to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment's Laboratories identified the positive case.

The case involves a male in his 70s with no travel history with underlying health conditions. Republic County Health Department is working to identify any close contacts of the individual and those who were exposed will be contacted as soon as possible. They will be monitoring these contacts for fever and respiratory symptoms. No further information about the patient will be released.

New COVID-19 cases in Bourbon County

Three more Bourbon County, Kan., positive COVID-19 tests were confirmed Sunday morning, bringing Bourbon County’s total number of cases to seven, according to a news release from the SEK Multi-County Health Departments.

The testing was confirmed through a reference laboratory that was used. The individuals were already in quarantine in their home, as a result, the chance for community spread from these individuals is minimal. Additionally, the Health Department is aware of each person’s exposure source and all individuals are isolated to their homes. All potential exposures have been notified and are/have been in quarantine, the release said.

A Bourbon County positive COVID-19 test was confirmed Saturday afternoon — the county’s fourth positive case. The testing was confirmed through a reference laboratory that was used. The individual was in a daycare in Bourbon County. This individual is now in isolation at their home, with their family who are now in quarantine. The Bourbon County Public Health Department has contacted the daycare and the provider has been notified and is taking precautions to prevent any spread of COVID-19. The Bourbon County Public Health Department is working diligently to investigate, identify and contact the other individuals who have been exposed, the news release said.

Harvey County confirms third case of COVID-19

NEWTON, Kan. — The Harvey County Health Department has confirmed its third presumptive positive case of novel coronavirus, or COVID-19, in Harvey County.

The confirmed case is a woman in her 60s. Testing was completed by a private lab. The case remains under investigation. The Health Department will regularly monitor the individual, as well as follow up on all contacts.

“Our communities need to remain diligent in reducing the spread of COVID-19. Keep washing your hands frequently, maintain social distance and stay healthy at home except to do the essentials,” said Harvey County Health Department Director Lynnette Redington.

The Seward County Health Department has released COVID 19 testing numbers for Seward County.

To date 30 tests Coronaviris tests have been administered, at facilities in Seward County. 20 tests have come back, with Zero(0) positive test results for Seward County residents. 6 tests are still pending, 3 have been rejected by the KDHE, with 1 positive test result to an out of County individual.

Total tests performed include all individuals tested at Seward County facilities known by the Health Department, but they may not all be Seward County residents. Total Positive Lab Results includes only Seward County residents, but are not representative of the total number of individuals with Covid 19 in Seward County KS..

Two COVID-19 deaths in Johnson County bring total to 9; Wyandotte County reports 7

Two more people in Johnson County who contracted the new coronavirus have died, bringing the number of fatal infections there to nine, officials said.

Of the people who died, five were in their 80s, three in their 70s and one was in their 40s. More than 210 people in the county have tested positive for COVID-19 as of Monday morning, according to county health officials.

Across Kansas, more than 740 people have tested positive for the virus as of Sunday. About 180 people have been hospitalized and 22 have died, according to state officials. More than 7,400 have tested negative.

Johnson County has seen the most confirmed cases of the virus in the state, according to Kansas Department of Health and Environment data. Wyandotte County has seen the second largest with at least 170 cases and seven deaths, the county reported Monday.

Saline County COVID-19 Related Death

The sixth confirmed COVID-19 related case has been reported in Saline County, and the first death.

According to the Saline County Health Department they have been notified of one additional positive COVID-19 case in a county resident. The patient was a man in his 60s. A COVID-19 test was administered and results were received on April 5th. This gentleman has since passed away.
