Stafford County confirms COVID-19 case

Shannon Snyder, RN and Director of the Stafford County Health Department and Stafford County Health Officer sent out a news release to the public on March 28, 2020 advising that the county had recorded a positive case of COVID-19.

“As of 4:30 p.m., Stafford County has one positive Case of COVID-19. This positive case is a male in his 30s and is currently in home isolation. No further information will be released as this case is currently under investigaion,“Snyder said in the release.

KDHE Enacting New Guidelines on Self-Serve Foods/Drinks

To help stop the spread of COVID-19, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment is enacting new guidelines for convenience stores and other establishments.

On Friday, the health department said there will no longer be self-serviced unpackaged food.

Pre-packaged food in hot or cold holding units that is accessible to the public for self-dispensing is allowed.

There is no longer self-serve coffee pots, store employees must pour the coffee for the customer.

Self-serve fountain drink stations and self-dispensing beverage machines are not allowed. Drinks must be dispensed by food-handling employees and new cups must be used every time (no reuse of cups and no cups brought from home).

Health officials say condiments normally found in a self-service bar must be packaged by employees and given to patrons with food (salsa, onions, salad dressings, hot dog/hamburger fixings, etc). Individual unwrapped utensils will not be available to customers. Employees will provide utensils with food. Lids and straws, including individually wrapped straws,will not be self-serve, they’ll be handed out by employees.

Coffey Co. has new COVID-19 cases



TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- The Coffey County Health Department announced three new positive cases of the coronavirus in the county, bringing the total to 21.

The new patients are a 24-year-old female, an 86-year-old female and an 80-year-old male.

There are 30 COVID-19 cases connected with Life Care Center in Burlington. This number includes employees and residents. Some employees do not life in Coffey County, which is why they aren't included in the county numbers.

Shawnee Co. has 23 cases of COVID-19

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- Shawnee County now has 23 cases of coronavirus, up two from yesterday. Those numbers come from the Shawnee County Department of Health's Coronavirus Community Impact Dashboard, which is available on their website.

Three people in the county have recovered from the virus, two have died,105 are being monitored and 32 are under investigation. Of those who have qualified for testing, 535 have tested negative.

The Leavenworth County Health Department has reported the county’s first death as a result of the coronavirus.

The Health Department has identified the person who died as a woman in her 50s.

She had been transported to a local emergency room. She had no recent travel history, but she had underlying health conditions.

The Leavenworth County Health Department made the announcement late Friday morning.

“Losing a life in our community is never easy, and we share condolences with the family and respect their privacy during these difficult times,” Leavenworth County Health Officer Jamie Miller said in a news release.

Leavenworth County has had a total of 33 confirmed cases of COVID-19 including the case that resulted in the woman’s death.

And the Health Department reports there are an additional 103 cases that likely are COVID-19 based on people who have reported having symptoms.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment reported that, as of 11 a.m. Friday, there were 620 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Kansas which have resulted in a total of 17 deaths.

A statewide stay home order remains in place. The order allows people to leave home for essential activities such as buying groceries or visiting the doctor.

Leavenworth County Health Department officials urge people to follow order.

Shawnee Co. Health Department holds weekly news conference

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- The Shawnee County Health Department held their weekly news conference Friday, with Linda Ochs, Dr. Gianfranco Pezzino and Mayor Michelle De la Isla present, as well as religious leaders from the community.

Ochs spoke first and gave an update on the status of cases in Shawnee County. There are currently 23 positive cases of the coronavirus in Shawnee Counties, with three recoveries and two deaths. 535 people that qualified to be tested had negative test results, 32 people are under investigation and 105 people are being monitored for symptoms. Ochs said that health professionals in the county are in desperate need of donations of essential items like disinfectant, surgical masks, surgery gowns and gloves.

Dr. Pezzino said there are at least five people in the county whose source of infection is unknown. He said that this means his prediction that the virus was in the county long before anyone tested positive was probably correct. He also addressed the myth that young people cannot get sick or die from the virus; about one third of all cases in Kansas are age 44 or younger, and 20 percent of all patients hospitalized with the virus in the United States are 44 or younger. He expressed his concern with public gatherings such as church services and funerals and urged people to stay home as much as possible.

In regards to church services, Mayor de la Isla said she has had conversations with leaders of many different faith communities in Topeka and introduced a pastor who expressed his sympathy for churchgoers who will not be able to attend Easter services, but encouraged everyone to stay home.

Third coronavirus case reported in Pottawatomie County

POTTAWATOMIE COUNTY, Kan. (KSNT) – Pottawatomie County health officials reported a new case of coronavirus on Friday, bringing the county total to three.

The latest positive case is related to a positive case in Riley County, according to health officials.

Right now, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment is only reporting two cases in Pottawatomie County.

No information was provided on the three patients.

Population testing for COVID-19 could soon begin in certain Kansas counties

TOPEKA, Kan. (KSNT) — It has been four weeks since the first positive case of the coronavirus hit Kansas. Now, as more test kits become available, the state is looking to test more people.

On Friday, Kansas Department of Health and Environment Secretary Lee Norman said that the state would be receiving hundreds of new test kits that take just 45 minutes to get results. With the new kits the state hopes to not only continue testing individuals with obvious symptoms, but also people who are seemingly healthy.

Secretary Norman says that young people are the most common ones spreading the virus to others. This is because young people often show little to no symptoms of the coronavirus. They don’t realize they are sick, so they continue to go to work or leave their home.

“Young people are less likely to follow rules and feel vulnerable. It’s the older folks and people with other kinds of immune deficiencies understand they’re at risk and young people don’t necessarily feel they’re at risk,” explained Secretary Norman.

He says by testing these people, they are able to quarantine if their results are positive, rather than continue to, unknowingly, spread the virus.

Secretary Norman says these population tests would begin in counties that are seeing large outbreaks of the virus. He says once the testing begins, it would likely only take a week to get through the entire process in the county.

Coronavirus in Kansas City: Confirmed cases of COVID-19 climb in Missouri, Kansas


2:45 p.m. -- According to information from the Unified Government’s Public Health Department, the death toll in Wyandotte County has climbed to six.

The county shows it has 130 confirmed cases of coronavirus with 141 self-reporting cases that haven't been confirmed and 52 probable cases. The county also said 40 patients have been hospitalized.

Shawnee County’s number of COVID-19 cases rises by two

hawnee County’s number of known COVID-19 cases rose to 28 Saturday from 26 on Friday, according to a community impact dashboard made available on the website of the Shawnee County Health Agency.

Twenty-three of those patients were continuing to receive treatment while three had recovered and two had died, according to information posted on that site at 8:45 a.m. Saturday.

The site indicated 31 people in Shawnee County were awaiting results of testing for COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, while 570 had tested negative and 104 were being monitored for the potential presence of the virus.

Some local hospital staff under COVID-19 quarantine

Three persons in Barton County have tested positive for the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), all located in the City of Claflin, Donna Zimmerman announced Friday in her capacity as Barton County's Public Information Officer. However, this does not mean that unidentified cases do not exist elsewhere in the county and precautions should be taken by all residents of the county in all cities and other parts of the county.

Some University of Kansas Health System - Great Bend Campus staff have been quarantined due to possible exposure to a COVID-19 patient.

A small number of staff at the University of Kansas Health System – Great Bend Campus have been quarantined due to possible exposure to a COVID-19 patient, Jill Chadwick, Kansas City, Mo.-based UKHS spokesperson, confirmed Saturday morning.

“Out of an abundance of caution, the decision was made to quarantine the staff members,” Chadwick said. However, this only involved a few employees and “patient care will not be impacted.”

Chadwick said she could not comment on the patient involved in the possible exposure and if this was one of the current three positive cases already confirmed in Barton County. That information would have to come from the Barton County Health Department or other county officials.

Virus cluster found at KCK rehabilitation center


17 residents, 2 staff members at Riverbend Post Acute Care Center test positive for virus

KANSAS CITY, Kan. —
A cluster of coronavirus cases have been found at a rehabilitation center in Kansas City, Kansas.

Seventeen residents and two staff members at Riverbend Post Acute Care Center have tested positive for the virus.


The chief medical officer with the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas said six of those residents have been hospitalized. Riverbend has 135 residents.

Statewide, the number of confirmed coronavirus cases grew Saturday to 698, up 78 from a day earlier. Twenty-one deaths were reported in Kansas.

K-State reports COVID-19 case



A student isolating in K-State's Jardine Apartments has tested positive for COVID-19, university officials announced Saturday.

The student reported having symptoms to K-State health staff on March 23 and has been in isolation since.

Prior to that, the student had been self-quarantined in a suite-style room with a private bathroom in Marlatt Hall after having returned from out of state, university officials said in a release. Lafene Health Center received confirmation that the person tested positive for the virus Saturday morning.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment reports 11 COVID-19 cases in Riley County as of 11 a.m. Saturday, up two from Friday's Riley County Health Department report of nine, although public health officer Julie Gibbs said the KDHE's online report Friday mistakenly indicated there were already 11 cases that day.

Governor Laura Kelly says Kansas could run out of personal protective equipment for medical personnel and others dealing directly with the coronavirus pandemic by the middle of next week.

Kelly issued her warning Friday as the state saw its largest spike in COVID-19-related deaths.

Kelly says Kansas received a shipment of personal protective equipment such as masks and gloves late Thursday night but still has six requests for more equipment yet to be filled by the federal government. She said the current supply will last until Tuesday.

Labette County hears of three positive cases of COVID-19 on Saturday

The Labette County Health Department announced on Saturday that three more county residents tested positive for COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus. This brings the county case count to four.

Labette County officials confirmed the second and third cases just before noon and the fourth case about 10 minutes later. One of the positive cases is a detective for the city of Parsons.

The first two cases were a 67-year-old woman and a 49-year-old man, both of whom are recovering at home. The fourth case was a 25-year-old woman who is recovering at home.

A release from the health department on the first two cases said to protect the patients' rights to privacy, no other identifying information will be provided. The fourth case announcement did not have more detail. As part of the regular practice of disease investigation, the Labette County Health Department will notify people who have had contact with the patients. Investigation has been initiated for both cases.

The Montgomery County Health Department is reporting two deaths of county residents from COVID-19. The individuals had underlying health conditions and were hospitalized in a hospital out-of-state at their times of passing. Montgomery County Health Department Administrator our condolence goes out to family and friends.

The Health Department strongly urges the public to continue to take appropriate precautions. Everyone needs to practice good hygiene, stay informed, practice social distancing and limit in-person interactions. If you are experiencing symptoms such as cough, fever or other respiratory problems, call your healthcare provider or an urgent care clinic first to determine if testing is needed. If symptoms are mild, do not go to the emergency room.
