Kindergartners hold up a 111-meter-long rainbow flag made by residents of Minami-Sanrikucho, Miyagi Prefecture, with the support of a citizens group on Friday, the eight-month anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake. The flag, meant as a symbol of hope for people in disaster-hit areas, was made by stitching together about 50 smaller flags on which people from various prefectures had written encouraging messages.

Collections of literary works on quake to hit U.S., Britain, France
"One Year Later," a collection of literary works by Japanese authors on the Great East Japan Earthquake, will be released by publishing houses in the United States, Britain and Japan in March 2012 to mark the first anniversary of the disaster.

Isetan Mitsukoshi boosts April-Sept. profit to 20.58 bil. yen
TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Isetan Mitsukoshi Holdings Ltd. said Friday its group net profit in the April to September period shot up nearly 50-fold to 20.58 billion yen from 413 million yen a year earlier as it booked deferred tax assets resulting from the merger of its two department store chains in April.

Volunteer determined to stay in disaster-hit city to keep promise
ISHINOMAKI, Miyagi -- A disaster relief volunteer has already spent some seven months doing aid work here, and plans to remain several more, all to fulfill a promise she made to victims of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.
