Highly Virulent H5 Strain Of Bird Flu Confirmed In Japan-KyodoLast update: 12/1/2010 10:08:34 AMDOW JONES NEWSWIRES Japan's farm ministry confirmed Wednesday that the chickens suspected of having avian flu at a farm in Shimane Prefecture had been infected with the highly virulent H5 strain of avian flu virus, Kyodo News reported. It represents the first infection since February 2009 when a quail farm in Toyohashi, Aichi Prefecture, was found to be infected by another strain of avian flu virus. The prefectural government in western Japan said it has found at least two breaks in a metallic bird net at the poultry farm in the city of Yasugi which could allow wild birds to enter the farm, although it had earlier announced there were no abnormalities in the net. The prefectural government suspects that the virus was brought by a wild bird and aims to identify the infection route in cooperation with researchers from the Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Ministry. Shimane also continued Wednesday to destroy the chickens at the farm and is aiming to complete the culling of some 23,000 birds by the end of the day. The culling began Tuesday, a day after five chickens were found dead at the farm and tested positive for bird flu in preliminary tests, and about 3,300 were destroyed by Tuesday evening. It is the first time that culling has started before the type of avian flu virus has been identified, according to the ministry. Neither Shimane nor neighboring Tottori Prefecture found any other chickens suspected of having bird flu. -Dow Jones Newswires; 212-416-2900 (END) Dow Jones NewswiresDecember 01, 2010 10:08 ET (15:08 GMT)

Confirmation of high pathogenic H5 subtype bird flu virus

The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries announced confirmation, high pathogenic "H5 sub-type" as a result of examining the virus gathered from the dying chicken on the first the problem being found for an infected chicken with the highly pathogenic avian influenza in the hennery in Shimane Prefecture Yasugi City.

Animal Research Laboratory of Public Health (Ibaraki Prefecture Tsukuba city) separated the virus from the specimen material and it examined it in detail though it had already been assumed the isomorph by another inspection of Shimane Prefecture.

The [ugomamoru] laboratory also started the inspection that vaccinated this virus to a healthy chicken further, measured the case fatality rate and earliness to die, and examined strong toxicity.

Institute for Animal Health (Tsukuba, Japan), the highly pathogenic H5 type was confirmed by examination.

The epidemiological investigation team composed of six experts to the ministry, said the bird net has a hole in the poultry farms, confirmed that the birds were ready to invade. According to the Shimane Prefecture, the hole was at least two places.

Bird net hole ◇, can invade wild

In this case, to find a report of dead chickens in a cluster that has five major poultry place on November 29. Review the rapid test positive for bird flu in the county, further genetic testing (PCR testing) was considered a strong suspicion of highly pathogenic well.

Ministry of Agriculture and county, because of the situation than five birds also died, on hearing the opinions of experts, judges and chickens suspected highly pathogenic bird flu for the first time waiting for the definitive diagnosis. And all birds culled 23,000 poultry have been fed, and decided to limit the movement of chickens and 10 km radius.

Viruses were detected in duck feces were collected in October, Wakkanai in Hokkaido Onuma the virulent H5N1 type, if this type of virus in Shimane Prefecture another test is needed. Epidemiology team one day, sent to members in Shimane Prefecture, which promote and investigation of HIV transmission.

  • Epidemiology
    • Source of the outbreak(s) or origin of infection
      • Unknown or inconclusive

  • Epidemiological comments
    • An outbreak of HPAI was confirmed on 2 December 2010 in Shimane prefecture. The previous outbreak of HPAI in Japan started in April 2008.
    • The event has been contained in the affected farm by control measures including stamping-out and movement restrictions.
    • On 29 November 2010, a local veterinary officer visited the farm immediately after notification from the owner. Although no remarkable increase of the mortality was recognized, the local veterinary service centre in the prefecture confirmed that 3 out of 5 samples taken from dead birds were influenza A virus positive by antigen-capture kits. On the same day, the centre confirmed the subtype was H5 by RT-PCR test.
    • On 1 December 2010, the National Institute of Animal Health affirmed an isolate was due to influenza A virus subtype H5 by HI test.
    • On 2 December 2010, the institute confirmed the cases as highly pathogenic avian influenza because the isolate caused 75 % mortality in 4-week-old chickens infected intravenously, and the amino acid sequence of the connecting peptide of the haemagglutinin was the same as that observed for the highly pathogenic avian influenza viruses isolated from faeces of wild ducks in Hokkaido in October 2008.
    • Killing of the susceptible animals started on 30 November 2010 and was completed on 2 December 2010. Incineration of the carcasses and disinfection of the farm are continuing.
    • A movement restriction zone was established within 10 km around the affected farm on 29 November 2010. In addition, the traffic around the affected farm was restricted. There are 4 poultry farms in addition to the affected farm in the zone. They are also under surveillance.
    • A total of 13 disinfection stations were established in and around the restriction zone.

  • Control measures
    • Measures applied
      • Control of wildlife reservoirs
      • Stamping out
      • Quarantine
      • Movement control inside the country
      • Screening
      • Disinfection of infected premises/establishment(s)
      • Vaccination prohibited
      • No treatment of affected animals
    • Measures to be applied
      • No other measures

  • Diagnostic test results
    • Laboratory name and type Domestic Livestock Disease Identification Office (Local laboratory)

Japan's Agriculture Ministry on Friday confirmed the first outbreak since 2007 of highly pathogenic H5N1 strain of avian influenza on a chicken farm.

The chickens that died in western Japan farm this week carried the H5N1 strain, which differs from a less virulent type of virus was found in central Japan in 2009, the ministry said in a statement.

Tests on four chicken farms within 10 kilometers of the center concerned with negative results and resume the supply of eggs on Friday, said Thursday evening the ministry in another statement.

Wild bird seen at farm just before avian flu hit

MATSUE, Shimane Pref. (Kyodo) A small wild bird alighted at a poultry farm in Yasugi, Shimane Prefecture, that has been hit by a highly virulent strain of avian flu virus, the prefecture said Friday, citing a sighting by the farm's owner.

The bird was seen around Monday, when five chickens were found dead at the farm, the owner told a team of epidemiologists from the Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Ministry, according to the prefectural government.

While it is possible that wild birds frequent the farm, the connection between the one bird's landing and the outbreak remains unclear...

...The experts' team has pointed out that wild birds could have entered the farm not just through enlarged holes in bird prevention nets but via openings used to discharge waste from the farm, the prefectural government said...
