Highly pathogenic avian influenza, Japan

Information received on 09/12/2010 from Dr Toshiro Kawashima, CVO, Animal Health Division, Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Tokyo , Japan

  • Summary
    • Report type Follow-up report No. 1
    • Start date 27/11/2010

    • Report date 09/12/2010
    • Date submitted to OIE 09/12/2010
    • Reason for notification Reoccurrence of a listed disease
    • Date of previous occurrence 01/04/2009
    • Manifestation of disease Clinical disease
    • Causal agent Highly pathogenic avian influenza virus
    • Serotype H5N1

  • Outbreaks
    • There are no new outbreaks in this report

  • Epidemiology
    • Source of the outbreak(s) or origin of infection
      • Unknown or inconclusive

  • Epidemiological comments
    • Incineration of the carcasses and disinfection of the farm were completed on 5 December 2010.
    • It is considered that the virus was carried to the surroundings of the farm by migratory birds because the outbreak occurred in a season when migratory birds came flying from the north to Lake Nakaumi nearby the farm.
    • The virus might have invaded the affected henhouse through wild birds, wild animals or others.
    • The National Institute of Animal Health affirmed by comparison of gene sequence that the isolate is classified into clade 2.3.2 and a closely-related strain with the virus isolated from faeces of migratory wild ducks in Hokkaido in October 2010.
    • The homology between these viruses is 99.6%.
    • It might indicate there is a possibility that some migratory birds coming flying from the north have highly pathogenic avian influenza virus.
    • Epidemiological survey on the source and the route of infection including virus isolation from the environment is carried over.

  • Control measures
    • Measures applied
      • Control of wildlife reservoirs
      • Stamping out
      • Quarantine

8 Dec., MAFF held closed meeting

summary
1 it is conceivable that viral infection was in very early stage because of conditions of dead fowls

2 Result of on‐the‐spot investigation on 2 Dec

(1)about the farm

1, dead fowl' spot: the spot is the furthest from the entrance of the farm, only the manager enter
2, travel history: managers and employees have never been to country of outbreak of bird flu
3, water for fowl: underground water from closed underground route
4, the net: there were part of broken net and mesh were relatively large
5, the wildfowl: the little bird can enter by pathway of compost because of raised-floor-style farm
6, testimony: the little bird had come into farm when the fowls died
7, existence of except fowl: rat, fly etc

(2) around the farm

1, there are many wildfowl around the farm
2, the farm is close to the lake Nakaumi, many waterfowl comes
3, the migratory birds came(close of season) when outbreak

Bird flu in Shimane: all restrictions lifted

Shimane Prefecture has confirmed that no new cases of bird flu have been detected around a poultry farm where infections were found in November. The prefecture lifted restrictions on the movement of chickens on Monday.
On November 29th, the H5 strain of bird flu was detected in the farm in Yasugi City. Starting the next day, the prefecture destroyed more than 21,000 chickens there, and restricted the movement of chickens to within a 10-kilometer radius of the farm. The measures to prevent the spread of bird flu were completed on December 5th....
