Woman dies of swine flu, 34 test positive for infection

Srinagar: A pregnant woman has died of swine flu and 34 others have tested positive for the infection in the Valley, a meeting was told on Monday.
Kashmir Reader learnt from an official that the meeting had been called to discuss health department?s assessment of the H1N1 or swine flu in the Valley. He said that among other things, health officials told the government that 34 patients have tested positive, while a pregnant woman died of the disease recently.
Dr Showkat Zargar, director SKIMS, Soura, confirmed that the meeting had been called to discuss the status of swine flu infection in the Valley and he too had attended it.

With two deaths reported today taking the H1N1 (Swine Flu) toll to four in last many days, SKIMS authorities are neither briefing the governor administration properly nor taking adequate precautions, highly informed sources revealed to Kashmir Life. The crisis could gradually get out of hand and become an epidemic.

Informed sources said the SKIMS administration is downplaying the crisis to prevent a panic. Sources said more than 300 people were scanned for the disease since late last year. By now seventy plus have tested positive and it includes patients who were on medicine.

Sources identified the dead male as Irfan Rashid of Habbak and the female as Qureshi Madina. While Rashid died in surgical ICU, Madina breathed her last in the medical ICU at SKIMS.

SKIMS authorities have confirmed two more H1N1deaths on Thursday.

In a brief statement issued tonight, SKIMS said they have set up a separate OPD for patients with respiratory symptoms in the Sarai building. This, the spokesperson said, was done to segregate patients with respiratory symptoms from other patients attending OPD and reduce cross infection. The facility of taking samples of H1N1 patients has been established there only.

Police officer dies of suspected H1N1

Jammu, Feb 19: A superintendent of police in his mid-forties died at the Acharya Shri Chander College of Medical Sciences (ASCOMS) Jammu of respiratory disorder while doctors are awaiting the medical report to ascertain whether the death was due to swine flu.

According to sources, the deceased KPS officer identified as Sunil Gupta was SP (administration) at the Zonal Police headquarters, Jammu and was admitted in the hospital with symptoms of swine flu. His blood sample was sent to National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Delhi, for investigations on Monday.
They further added that Gupta was put on life support ventilator and died early this morning due to respiratory disorder.

Two people have died of swine flu in Kashmir during the last 24 hours, while 12 fresh cases have been reported, taking the number of people infected with the disease to 96, health officials said today.

"Two deaths have occurred in the last 24 hours because of swine flu," Head of Department (HoD) of Medicine, Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), Dr Parvaiz Kaul told PTI.

Srinagar, Feb 19: SKIMS authorities confirmed that 13 new samples have tested positive for H1N1 taking the total number of swine flu affected cases to 84. Four patients are currently admitted at SKIMS ?isolation ward?, the authorities reported.

Among the infected are four doctors, some employees of SKIMS.

?Yes, four of our doctors have tested positive for H1N1,? Dr Farooq Jan, Medical Superintendent SKIMS said. However, when asked about the steps being taken by the authorities to safeguard its staff, Dr Jan expressed helplessness.

Since the outbreak of Swine Flu in Kashmir, the local poultry entrepreneurs as well as the consumers seem to be confused as some false rumors have attributed the virus to consumption of chicken, egg and mutton. Some poultry farmers are so fear-stricken that they have closed their farms.

The poultry entrepreneurs and the consumers need to know that Swine Flu is not even distantly related to Bird Flu. While the former disease occurs due to close contact of humans with the Swine/Pigs, the later occurs due to the affected birds.

Presently, there are no reports of Bird Flu from any part of the country. Therefore, the transmission of any deadly viral disease from poultry birds to poultry rearers is out of question. The poultry farmers need to continue the poultry rearing without paying any heed to rumors.

Srinagar 21/2/2015: Six patients admitted at SKIMS isolation ward have been discharged today. At present seven(7) patients positive for H1N1 are admitted, out of which only one is on ventilator. No death has been reported today. Apart from 4000 N95 masks received yesterday patients are also informed that Tamiflu is also now available at SKIMS. 109 patients have been tested positive since October2014 till date.
Today samples for H1N1 were taken from 50 patients out of 283 patients with respiratory symptoms seen at the Special OPD at attendant Sarai at SKIMS. General public is informed that Special OPD at attendant Sarai SKIMS will remain functional on Sunday i,e 22/2/2015 from 10.00 A.M to 4.00 P.M.

Meanwhile, another patient who was tested positive for swine flu died at the hospital late Saturday night. However, according to the institute, the patient was admitted to the hospital for multiple heart ailments on three days back. ?Patient was 28-year-old male from Kokernag who had cardiac comorbidities like AR, MR and left ventricular failure and had been admitted at SKIMS on 19th Feb for those conditions only,? institute?s public relations officer said here, adding that the patient was tested positive for swine flu.

[h=1]Swine flu toll rises to six in Kashmir[/h] Srinagar, Feb 23 (IANS) ? With one more H1N1 virus infected patient dying overnight here, the total number of swine flu deaths in Jammu and Kashmir rose to six Monday while the number of infected people went up to 120.
?One more H1N1 infected patient died yesterday (Sunday),? Parvaiz Koul, pulmonary disease specialist at the super-specialty Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences here, told IANS.
?The total number of H1N1 infected patients being treated inside the hospital is eight.?
?We have provided sufficient medicines and preventive advisories to attendants of the swine flu patients, who are being treated at home,? he added.
The doctor said that regular washing of hands, avoiding shaking of hands, refraining from touching another?s face, warm salt water gargling and frequent consumption of tea and coffee were precautions needed to avoid getting infected.

[h=1]Toll reaches 7 as 26-year-old H1N1 patient succumbs at Chest Disease hospital[/h] SRINAGAR - A 26-year-old who was diagnosed with H1N1 infection died at Chest Disease hospital here Sunday evening.
Reports said a doctor was assaulted by the attendants of the deceased who was undergoing treatment at the hospital, soon after he broke the news of death to them.
The Chest Disease hospital is reportedly facing acute shortage of equipment and medicines.
The original proposal of the state health authorities was to set up H1N1 isolation ward at Government Nursing Home in Gupkar which houses the residences of top politicians, security officials and bureaucrats.

Srinagar, Feb 23: Two patients are suspected to have died of Swine Flu at SMHS hospital here within 24 hours, even as officials at SK Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) said 19 more cases tested positive for the influenza.

A 27-year-old man from Qamarwari locality of Srinagar died at SMHS hospital Sunday night, medicos said.

?The young man suffered Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) which deteriorated and led to his respiratory arrest.

He had been admitted to hospital on February 21. Though no H1N1 test was conducted on him, his symptoms indicated that he possibly died of H1N1,? said a doctor who attended him.

Doctors at the hospital said a 24-year-old woman from south Kashmir?s Pulwama district was brought to the Casualty and ?died within minutes.?

Chief Medical Officer Ganderbal, Dr R D Kasana said a couple of days ago some residents of proper Ganderbal complained of chest pain and fever. ?After taking [COLOR=#1b8ede !important]the samples[/COLOR] of the patients, two have tested positive. Both are middle aged male and female,? he said adding that both the patients have been shifted to Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences Soura.

CMO Ganderbal appealed to the people to follow the advisory issued by Directorate of Health Service in order to keep the H1N1 virus at bay.

`Swine flu` patient dies, 3 test positive

Jammu, Feb 25: The scare of Swine Flu continues to frighten the people here in winter capital as one more suspected swine flu patient died in Government Medical College here while three persons tested positive for H1N1 virus after fresh reports of eleven patients were received Wednesday evening . As per hospital sources, a middle aged suspected swine flu patient died in the isolation ward of Col Copra Nursing Home in the wee hours on Wednesday. They said that deceased had serious symptoms of H1N1 and his sample has been sent for confirmation but the cultural report could not be received in time.

Pulwama, Feb 25: Panic gripped Lasidaban Qasbayar area of Pulwama district after a minor boy died of swine flu like symptoms.
Reports said the 8-year old minor boy, Muzamil Ahmad of Lasidaban, who was shifted to hospital following symptoms like acute fever, throat infection and cold, died on way to the hospital.

"We have come to know that Dr Bupinder Singh who had tested positive for swine flu and was admitted in GMC hospital in Jammu expired in New Delhi where he was airlifted this afternoon, but so far we don't have any official confirmation of his death," Director Health services Jammu, Dr Baljeet Pathania said.

Meanwhile, two more patients with symptoms similar to that of swine flu were admitted to Government Medical College hospital on Thursday, thus taking the total number of admitted patients to 22.

"Today, 59 patients with flu like symptoms visited the OPD here out of which two were admitted in the hospital. So far we have 22 patients admitted in the isolation ward of our hospital," Dr RR Paul Medical superintendent GMC said.
