Decreases 70% patients suspected of having influenza A-H1N1 in the IMSS
Specialist urged them not to let their guard down as risk groups get vaccinated against the new virus as it is expected rebound in January

Tue, 22/12/2009 - 17:01
Guadalajara .- The care of patients with influenza-like illness in the Mexican Social Security Institute in Jalisco (IMSS) fell 70 percent this month, but it is possible that a rebound in virus infection, H1N1 is present in January and February.

"The demand for care by an influenza has declined significantly nationwide and much especially here in Jalisco, so that the monitoring continues, not lowered our guard, but the decrease in cases has been very, very important," said the Public Health assistant coordinator of IMSS Jalisco, Armando Salas Lino.

The doctor reported that in the IMSS Jalisco there is a decrease "of 70 percent of suspected cases" of influenza A-H1N1, but urged them not to let their guard down as risk groups get vaccinated against the new virus "primarily medical have contact with patients and pregnant women, "he said.

"The vaccine does not kill the flu itself," he cited, noting that the reactions of the vaccine are minimal.

IMSS Jalisco reported that 14 thousand applied vaccines A-H1N1 and is waiting to start with another 35 thousand.

Lino Salas said maintaining an average hospitalization of 12 patients a day at the Hospital of IMSS Jalisco, and recalled that because of the season keeping the number of people ill with other acute respiratory infections, which have similar symptoms (fever, coughing and headaches and throat), but not all influenza.

This year ends with more maternal deaths in Jalisco

Various diseases stalked during 2009 to mothers Jalisco, and several died despite medical efforts. ARCHIVE

* Human influenza, a cause

Though he had set a target of reducing under-52 deaths (registration 2008), this year will finally at least 68 deaths
GUADALAJARA, JALISCO .- At the close of the 2009, the Jalisco Health Secretariat (SJS) takes stock of its most important indicators, which he served and those who could not be reached.

One in which no progress was made was the reduction of maternal deaths, which in 2008 Jalisco and ended with 52 deaths this year is expected to close at 68. The goal was to present this 2009 only 40 deaths, to comply with one of the Millennium Goals.

According to the planning director of SJS, Arturo Pe?a Muzquiz, one of the reasons why increasing numbers of maternal deaths were due to atypical confirmed deaths in pregnant women because of influenza, a situation that was not the last year.

"A proportion of the increase corresponds to the deaths of women, there are 14 suspicious deaths, of which seven have already been confirmed, six for A H1N1 and seasonal influenza."

He says that despite the effort that has been done nationally to prevent maternal deaths, the indicator has been rising in many states. In Jalisco, particularly the number of deaths has varied from year to year. In 2006 there were 72 deaths, down considerably in 2007 when we had 45, then climbing to 52 last year.

In the case of cervical cancer in 2008 ended with 6.25 deaths per 100 thousand women, and this year the target was 6.26, but is expected to close with a rate of 7.02 deaths so neither could be reached the goal, "we would discreetly above the goal," Pena said Muzquiz.

Reliance also failed to close positively on clenbuterol poisoning, because the goal was zero cases in 2009, and had 15, but below 2008, when they were 21.

In other areas it could

What we could presume the state secretariat is in the incidence of breast cancer in the entity, for which there is a target of 11.46 deaths per 100 thousand women, and according to the epidemiological behavior of this year, is expected to close below the goal, with a rate of 10.5 deaths. In 2008 the indicator of breast cancer was 12.23 deaths per 100 thousand inhabitants.

Another challenge for this year was to reduce the number of deprivations of life in the State, considering close to 4.80 deaths per 100 thousand inhabitants, to overcome the previous year's figure, when it had a rate of 5.15.

The secretariat plans to finish this 2009 with 4.58 deaths from deprivation of life for every 100 thousand Jalisco.

Regarding diabetes mellitus, which represents the leading cause of death in the state, with four thousand 970 in the 33 thousand deaths that were taken during 2008, it is estimated that close 2009 with a rate of 70.01 deaths per 100 thousand inhabitants diabetes.

"It is discreetly below that of 2008, which was 70.2, but well short of the goal that we set at the beginning of the year, which was 81.99 deaths."

Muzquiz Pena said that in terms of hospital discharges, which measures performance in hospitals, for this year are projected close to 195 thousand 132 discharges across the hospital network, which includes 10 regional, 16 of first contact, five maternal children, civilians, the "Hospitality" and the four institutes, the Mental Health, Palliative Care, Dermatology and Cancer.

The goal was 158 thousand 631, 2008, closed with 187 thousand 622, so that the secretariat was able to be above the target.

"The intention is to have fewer hospitalizations, work well because disease prevention strategies, but we have an aging population and a growing occupations hospital aged 65 years and older with problems of his age" .

009 the year of epidemics Jalisco
There were about five thousand cases of dengue and four thousand of influenza A-H1N1.

Mon, 04/01/2010 - 05:53

The massive spraying undertaken by the authority was unable to stop the dengue mosquito. Photo: Humberto Muniz .- To Guadalajara Jalisco, 2009 was a year in health unheard of, say medical researchers at the University of Guadalajara (University of Guadalajara), which since last July warned of coexistence in the status of three epidemics: Influenza A-H1N1 that is shared across the country, the presence of seasonal influenza in some entities only, and which alone claimed 16 lives here-and dengue.

Jalisco is the fourth national dengue cases and will close 2009 with about five thousand people who suffered from viral infection transmitted by the mosquito Aedes aegypti. They are officially recognized cases, with a specific laboratory test. But Health Secretary in the state, Alfonso Petersen Farah, said the case likely will total 60 mil-affected people with the disease but were not asked to test lab because the indication is to sample only 10 percent of outpatients and inpatients total.

Confirmed cases are 4.697 (up to epidemiological week 51, which came to 26 December, but on that date or the previous week was no report in the country, apparently for the New Year holiday), and there also one confirmed death and 30 suspicious deaths studied by the Department of Epidemiology in Mexico City.

With its 4.697 confirmed infections (227.5 per cent more than what they were in week 51 of 2008, when it reported 1.434) in 2009 was experienced its worst dengue epidemic in the last three decades for the entity. The most severe outbreak in modern history of Jalisco was recorded in 1988, 4.508 cases were confirmed. And in this decade, the year 2006 was 1.851 for first place with infections concentrated mostly in Puerto Vallarta.

The authorities of the SSJ said in recent days that from the epidemiological week 40 start to register a decline in the number of infections, but outbreaks, this time concentrated in the Guadalajara metropolitan area, not decrease until they changed the insecticide and still remained high in the nine weeks.

For 2010, the head of Vectors and Zoonoses of SJS, Fermina Espinosa Alcantara, admitted that the number of dengue infections can be similar to last year if there is no greater social participation (P?blico, 22 December 2009), although they have established strategies to achieve this.

Attention is the contagion of DHF, the more dangerous version of the disease, because they reported 776 officers, compared with only four of all 2008, implying an increase of 19.300 percent. Figure that could trigger even more in 2010, before the proliferation of cases of dengue fever, which seed the ground for those who are bitten by the second time by contracting the hemorrhagic fever mosquito.

The new threat

The number of confirmed deaths has caused the epidemic of A-H1N1 in Jalisco is 77, according to data from the State Health Secretariat (SJS) which are available on the website of state government. The national death registration lags behind the notifications made by this entity, so the figure is lower.

According to the SSJ, Jalisco expected to close 2009 with five thousand infections, to which should not be hit: December 30th recorded 3.985 cases of influenza A-H1N1. There is also affected by seasonal influenza 1.195.

The organization has called attention to the deaths of seven women who are pregnant or postpartum because of influenza infection, which represents a higher percentage than the national average of deaths in this age group, which is 4 percent. However, pregnant mothers have not responded to the call to go to get vaccinated.

Update pending

After two weeks without notifying a single case of dengue across the country, it is expected that once the holiday period in the year, the National Center of Epidemiological Surveillance and Disease Control (CENAVECE) update its statistics, which This week could be released significant amounts of new reports.

The most recent update of the Epidemiology Bulletin issued by the CENAVECE was in the epidemiological week 49, 2009, for the period of 6 to 12 December, when it reported 130 new cases of dengue in Jalisco, to reach 4.697 and then zero infections in week 50 and 51, but this in a report as to the entire country, which is evidence that did not include new reports, which are expected to change the report for week 52 of the year, which should appear today.

One of the most important points is that people come to receive medical attention immediately if fever of 38 degrees or greater, as this invariably results indicate an infectious process, bacterial or viral infection.

The Unit believes that if this sign are added as cough, runny nose and headache, there are great chances that the case of influenza.

The invitation from the SSJ, is for people not on your guard and go to health centers where the disease is in the process of initiation, ie fever has suddenly appeared, indeed if accompanied by symptoms such as cough or runny nose.

If the person already has trouble breathing, and even talk and have a fever should go immediately to hospital care, and no one should self-medicate, because far from improving it mask the true symptoms and treatment is delayed.

An important point is not to fear the drug, since it has been used successfully during the gestation in several cases.
