Italy, new outbreak of avian influenza in a turkeys farm in Padua - November 14, 2023
A new outbreak of avian flu in the Lower Padua area, high alert on farms
November 14, 2023 at 08:48
A year later the nightmare returns and the memory goes to the horrible months of autumn 2021, when in the Veneto the epidemic cost 14 million animals culled and half a billion euros wasted for farmers in the area. In the past few hours the health authority has detected an outbreak of avian influenza on a farm in the Lower Padua area: a farm with a few hundred turkeys, which in the space of 2-3 days saw at least 300 animals suddenly die.
The case in Sant'Urbano
Unfortunately, the farmers are well educated - given the experiences of recent years - and the fear that it could be avian influenza quickly became apparent. The tests conducted by Local Health Authority 6 Euganea and the Tre Venezie Zooprophylactic Institute confirmed: the highly pathogenic virus has returned to the Sant'Urbano farm, in the Carmignano area. Turkeys that have not already died from the new wave of flu will be slaughtered at this time. In fact, it should be remembered that the strict safety and prevention protocol linked to this virus requires that, even in the presence of just one infected animal, the entire animal population of the company is killed and disposed of. The outbreak also triggers a surveillance perimeter which also forces other neighboring farms to raise their security mechanisms.

Italy reported bird flu outbreak on farm, WOAH says
Reuters | Posted: 8 hours ago | Updated: 8 hours ago | 1 Min Read
...The outbreak killed 10 poultry birds on a farm in Sant' Urbano, in the Veneto region, the WOAH said, citing a report from the Italian authorities...
From one to three in the space of a few days. And the alarm bell, inevitably, rings louder and louder: a nightmare called 'avian flu' hovers over Lower Padua.
Bird flu
After the first outbreak detected in recent days in Sant'Urbano, in fact, in the same municipality today, Friday 17 November, two more have been confirmed, with significant numbers to say the least: 21,500 turkeys, 98 thousand chickens and 20 thousand have already been killed Pharaoh. The risk of the disease spreading further led the regional health authorities to convene a crisis unit at 4pm, in order to limit the damage.

Avian flu has returned to Puglia. The highly pathogenic one - the most dangerous - had not been seen in the region since 2006, when panic triggered. After 17 years, 20 birds have died on a rural farm in Lecce. The carcasses of two chickens, a wild goose and a turkey were analyzed three days ago by the Avian Pathology of the Veterinary Medicine department of the University of Bari, section directed by Professor Antonio Camarda: they tested positive for the H5 avian subtype. The risk of transmission from animals to humans is very low, but it is there. And therefore we must not underestimate the situation, Covid docet.

Avian flu in a farm between Lecce and Acaja, around 80 animals killed: ASL surveillance phase. Fedele: “Report dead animals”
by Gaetano Gorgoni
December 21, 2023 11.59pm
VERNOLE – Some cases of avian influenza have been discovered in recent days in a farm in the countryside between Acaja and Lecce: around 80 animals have already been killed. The news did not leak immediately to avoid panic and protests from animal rights activists. The practice is to cull infected animals, even those that are apparently well. The migration of birds carried the virus to Salento. The Prevention Department led by Dr. Alberto Fedele invites everyone to be careful if dead animals are found: it is necessary to promptly notify the authorities. The owners of the Salento farm did not contract the virus. The situation can be delicate for the hunting activity that takes place in those areas. The avian virus can be transmitted from animals to humans. “There is no risk for the animals marketed in those areas close to the farm in question - reassures Alberto Fedele - We have carried out analyzes on domestic animals in all the surrounding areas and they were negative. If there are people walking in that area, you will have to pay attention to birds that are found dead. Don't touch them and notify the authorities! The outbreak is in a countryside area in Acaja . We immediately put the protocols in place: 10 kilometers of surveillance zone and 3 of protection."
The damage to the Salento farm is amortized at a few thousand euros: the authorities are working precisely to avoid further problems of this type.
Avian emergency in Piove di Sacco. Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) continues to be a serious threat to public health and the sustainability of the poultry industry globally. The national reference center for avian influenza at the experimental zooprophylactic institute of the Venezie (IZSVe) confirmed yesterday 20 February a positivity from the H5N1 HPAI virus in a farm of approximately 39 thousand meat turkeys in the municipality of Piove di Sacco. The health authorities, following the convocation of the regional crisis unit, immediately arranged the management actions of the outbreak and the monitoring of the poultry farms located in the restriction zones.
