Two people have died from the West Nile virus in Lazio. They are an 84-year-old man, residing in Latina and an 87-year-old woman, from Cassino. The number of deaths due to the virus in the region thus rises to 12.

The elderly man, a resident of Latina, died on August 10 at the Santa Maria Goretti hospital. The patient was suffering from lymphocytic leukemia and following post-death tests, he was confirmed positive for the virus. The other victim is an 87-year-old woman from Cassino with multiple pathologies, who arrived in the emergency room on August 17 and died last night, Tuesday August 19. There are thus twelve deaths from West Nile virus in the region.
Eight new cases

In Lazio, the analyzes carried out by the Virology laboratory of the Spallanzani - Institute of Hospitalization and Scientific Care, compared to the update of last August 18, have certified 8 new cases. Two of them with neurological syndrome and 5 cases with West Nile virus fever. An asymptomatic donor was instead identified thanks to the screening activities of the Regional Blood Center, demonstrating the safety guaranteed by the regional transfusion system.

Sardinia, West Nile cases rise to 31: two deaths in the Oristano area

West Nile, 718 confirmed cases and 49 victims in Italy


Among the 718 confirmed cases, 341 occurred in the neuro-invasive form, the most severe, with a lethality of 14.4% calculated on these forms, a slight decrease compared to the 20% detected in 2018 and substantially stable compared to 2024. The spread of the virus now affects 75 provinces in 17 Italian regions, including Piedmont, Lombardy, Veneto, Lazio, Campania and Sardinia. In particular, the regions with the highest number of neuro-invasive cases are Lazio (84), Campania (79) and Lombardy (51). The 49 deaths are concentrated mainly in Lazio (18), Campania (14) and Piedmont (7).
In addition to neuro-invasive forms, there are also 57 asymptomatic cases identified among blood donors and 309 cases with febrile symptoms. Among the latter, three are cases imported from foreign countries such as Kenya, Egypt and the Maldives. At the same time, 10 cases of infection with Usutu virus, another mosquito-borne arbovirus, were reported, mainly distributed between Piedmont, Lombardy, Veneto and Lazio.
