Since the beginning of the year there are 502 with 33 deaths
The confirmed cases of West Nile Virus (WNV) infection in humans rise to 502 in Italy (430 in the previous bulletin), with 33 deaths. This is stated in the eighth surveillance bulletin edited by the ISS published today.
Among the confirmed cases, 226 occurred in the neuro-invasive form (11 Piedmont, 16 Lombardy, 17 Veneto, 1 Friuli-Venezia Giulia, 1 Liguria, 15 Emilia-Romagna, 3 Tuscany, 71 Lazio, 2 Molise, 72 Campania, 1 Puglia, 2 Basilicata, 5 Calabria, 1 Sicily, 8 Sardinia), 40 asymptomatic cases identified in blood donors, 226 cases of fever (of which 1 imported from Kenya), 5 asymptomatic cases and 5 symptomatic cases.
33 deaths were notified (3 Piedmont, 1 Lombardy, 1 Emilia-Romagna, 14 Lazio, 12 Campania, 2 Calabria). The lethality, calculated on confirmed and reported neuro-invasive forms, is 14.6% (20% in 2018, 14% in 2024).
In the same period, 4 cases of Usutu virus were reported (2 Piedmont, 1 Veneto, 1 Lazio).
The number of provinces with demonstrated WNV circulation belonging to 16 regions rises to 63: Piedmont, Lombardy, Veneto, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Liguria, Emilia-Romagna, Tuscany, Lazio, Abruzzo, Molise, Campania, Puglia, Basilicata, Calabria, Sicily and Sardinia.
