Irkutsk, Russia (ex Tajikistan): Confirmed polio importation

Re: Irkutsk, Russia (ex Tajikistan): Confirmed polio importation

Polio back
In Russia officially confirmed two cases of polio. Dangerous infection was detected in young children, arrived in Russia from Tajikistan. The outbreak of polio in the Central Asian republic, registered in early April, has not yet localized, so that in the near future the number of imported cases of this infection in Russia could increase. Propagating in Tajikistan poliovirus represents a real threat to those who have not been vaccinated against this infection. And such people in Russia a lot.

Angarsk - Moscow

The first child with suspected polio was hospitalized in Angarsk, May 3. Symptoms of the disease were detected in 9-month-old girl who arrived from Tajikistan along with their parents. In the evening on May 12 head of Rospotrebnadzor Gennady Onishchenko said that the diagnosis of poliomyelitis in a child confirmed by laboratory studies. On the next day it became known about the second suspected case of polio - this time in Moscow. Second Tajik girl with suspected polio and was hospitalized in 1-st infectious diseases hospital of the capital. Soon Onishchenko told Itar-Tass that the diagnosis of a second child is also confirmed by laboratory tests.

According to Gennady Onishchenko, asymptomatic carriers of poliovirus detected as a few adult citizens of Tajikistan, who arrived on the territory of Russia. Most likely, it is the relatives of affected children.

Polio - a viral infection that affects the gray matter of the spinal cord. The disease develops mainly in children. Poliovirus enters the central nervous system, multiplies in the motor neurons and causes their death, which in turn leads to paralysis of innervated muscles. The virus enters the body airborne and fecal-oral routes and multiplies in the intestine. In most cases, infection is asymptomatic. However, one of the 200 cases of infection leads to irreversible paralysis (usually the legs). About 5-10 percent of these patients die as a result of the cessation of breathing.
Outbreak of poliomyelitis due to wild poliovirus strain, fixed in Tajikistan in late April. According to recent data, the number of cases of acute flaccid paralysis caused by infection, is close to three hundred, 15 infected children have died. In dozens of cases of diagnosed cases of polio have been confirmed by laboratory tests. Cases of acute flaccid paralysis in children are registered in Uzbekistan. The Uzbek authorities, however, say that laboratory tests have not confirmed the connection between these diseases with poliovirus.

Activities to localize outbreaks of poliomyelitis in Tajikistan upon its support of the World Health Organization, UNICEF, as well as specialists Rospotrebnadzor. In the Republic started emergency vaccination against poliomyelitis: the beginning of July, three vaccinations receive a total of half a million local children. Authorities plan to neighboring Uzbekistan coverage of three million children.

Tajikistan and other Central Asian republics were recognized as the World Health Organization polio-free areas in the early 2000's. The last polio cases in Russia were registered in 1997 in Chechnya, and were directly associated with the cessation of vaccination of children from the fighting in the republic.

Persistent pockets of polio are now stored in the four regions: in Nigeria, as well as in remote areas of Afghanistan, Pakistan and India.Genetic studies of samples of poliovirus, isolated from the Tajik patients showed that the parasite infection was introduced into Central Asia from India.

Exclusion

Sanitary Service of the Russian Federation taking active measures to prevent importation of polio into the country. Soon after the registration of the first presumptive case of infection in Angarsk Rospotrebnadzor head Gennady Onishchenko has forbidden entry to Russia Tajik children under 6 years. Employees Rospotrebnadzor check passengers trains and planes arriving from the Central Asian republic, confiscate Tajik dried fruits and nuts from retail outlets, spend an additional vaccinations citizens of Tajikistan, on the territory of Russia.

It is worth noting that the vast majority of poliovirus infections are asymptomatic. In this case, remaining outwardly healthy carrier of infection continues to infect others. To identify such people among the thousands of immigrants from Tajikistan is almost impossible. Given the number of Tajik migrant workers in Russia, as well as the fact that most of them are in our country illegally and prefer not to communicate with the authorities, quickly identify new infections will be difficult.

Every hundredth

Commenting on the situation of poliomyelitis, Gennady Onishchenko, said the threat of an outbreak of the disease in Russia is currently lacking, and further developments will depend on the success of anti-epidemic measures in Tajikistan. In another interview, however, Onishchenko warned that imported cases of polio constitute a real threat to the Russians. "In a country where polio is not recorded for many years, though the appearance of imported cases - it is really dangerous," - he said.

The only effective means of protection against polio is timely vaccination. In Russia, polio vaccine is included in the national immunization schedule, the first series of vaccinations children receive at the age of 3 months, using a live vaccine revaccination is carried out at the age of one and a half and two years, using the inactivated vaccine - once before the child reaches the age of two.

It is no secret, however, that in recent years, an increasing number of Russian parents refuse to vaccinate children under the influence of antiprivivochnoy propaganda. According to WHO experts, the chief scientific officer of the Centre Children 's Health Vladimir Tatochenko, compulsory vaccination against polio is not received about 1 percent of the inhabitants of Russia. Thus, under the threat of infection were about a half million Russians. "Let now shaking," - said Tatochenko, adding that the contamination of polio is fraught with disabilities and deaths.

In fact, in terms of return was considered to eradication of the disease myths about the uselessness of vaccination can lead to truly tragic consequences. :tiphat:http://medportal.ru/mednovosti/main/2010/05/13/polio/

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia has confirmed its first polio case in 13 years in an infant visiting from Tajikistan, but there is no immediate threat of a wider outbreak, the country's main public health body said Friday.

The 9-month-old girl was diagnosed with the disease after arriving in the Siberian region of Irkutsk from the Central Asian state, where at least 12 people have died from a polio outbreak, said Rospotrebnadzor spokeswoman Lyubov Voropayeva.

"All the necessary epidemiological measures have been taken. There is not currently any threat the disease will spread," Voropayeva said.

Tests in a Moscow hospital found that a second girl from Tajikistan, also 9 months old, was carrying the polio virus but had not developed the disease, Voropayeva said. The last case of polio was confirmed in Russia in 1997.

Polio, which spreads in areas with poor sanitation, attacks the nervous system and can cause irreversible paralysis within hours of infection. Children under the age of 3 are most vulnerable.

The disease was practically eliminated as a public health problem in industrialized countries in the 1960s, but remains endemic in seven countries, including India, Nigeria and Pakistan, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

At least 12 people have died of polio since January in Tajikistan, WHO figures show. "It is a huge outbreak," WHO spokeswoman Sona Bari told Reuters in Geneva.

She said at least 83 cases of polio had been registered in Tajikistan. Apart from Russia, no other ex-Soviet country has reported infections from the outbreak, she said.

UNICEF, the U.N. children's fund, Friday said it was starting a second round of polio vaccination in Tajikistan, aiming to reach 1.1 million children under the age of 6 and was planning additional vaccinations in Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan.

The WHO, a U.N. agency, will present its strategy for eradicating polio by 2013 at its annual ministerial meeting of 193 member states in Geneva next week.

Chief Sanitary Doctor of Russia believes that the cause of recent events - the refusal to vaccinate children

Chapter Rospotrebnadzor, Chief Sanitary Doctor Gennady Onishchenko believes that the outbreak of poliomyelitis in Tajikistan - first of all, miscalculation of the European WHO office. "Reason one: not vaccinated child contingent" - he said.

Onishchenko said that today in Russia is still recorded only two cases of importation of polio - two 9-month-old girls, women citizens of Tajikistan, reminds RIA Novosti . Earlier he said that Russian citizens are not threatened by the epidemic, since all the children of the country are immunized against the disease.

Onishchenko also noted that Russia is taking adequate measures in response to the outbreak of poliomyelitis in Tajikistan. . In particular, denied entry of children under six years of this republic.

Recorded in Russia polio has Indian origin
-------------------------------------------------- ----------------

In Russia the first time in fifteen years, a polio. This diagnosis of the doctors put two 9-month-old baby, who
came with parents from Tajikistan, where at present there is an outbreak of this disease. One of the cases being treated
In Moscow, the second in the city of Angarsk, Irkutsk region. With suspected infection in Angarsk hospitalized several more children.

Since 2002, Russia is a country free from polio. The latest outbreak of the disease was in the 90 years in Chechnya. Today
confirmed the diagnosis of polio chief sanitary doctor Gennady Onishchenko: "In the Russian Federation reported
Two cases - imported polio cases among Tajik citizens who came to our country. This 9-month-old girl in
both cases. One of the Irkutsk region, one in Moscow. All the necessary anti-epidemic measures are adopted, these children are at
hospitalized, they receive adequate medical benefits. The whole set of necessary activities carried out, a threat to
spread the virus to date, no. Since we are dealing with a "wild" strain of the virus, which is of Indian origin
that population immunity Russian citizens there, but expose it tests we believe to be unnecessary.
In the Irkutsk region polio was already 40 years. Fell ill girl came with her parents in Angarsk May 1 from Tajikistan. Symptoms
dangerous disease appeared in just three days.
Poliomyelitis, or children's spinal paralysis that begins as an ordinary ARI
temperature rises, there is pain in the muscles, possibly shortness of breath. Later, paralysis. Now the girl fell ill
located in a regional infectious children's hospital. The deputy chief doctor of the medical part of the Irkutsk Oblast Hospital Olga
Bondarchuk said: "In acute poliomyelitis rapid positive dynamics should not expect, but she declined paresis, ie, if
Entry girl was asleep, and глазик she had not closed, but now she is sleeping already with her eyes closed. All contact children and
adult - were examined for the presence of the virus. In four children the virus was isolated, but this virus carrier, ie, the disease has not developed and
not develop. "

Put a temporary ban on entry into Russia for children under 6 years old - the citizens of Tajikistan. At the airport of Irkutsk and Bratsk all Tajik
citizens under 15 years now mandatory to be vaccinated against polio. In this country at the outbreak
polio so far this year 15 children died, just as there ill 298.
Emergency aid to 4 million polio vaccines - was sent to Tajikistan, UN Children's Fund and the World
Health. They have to instill 1.1 million children. Vaccinations are doing in three phases, and vaccination should be completed as early as
beginning of June. At airports and train stations in Tajikistan before going abroad all the passengers under 15 years must undergo a mandatory
vaccination.
Polio is transmitted and droplets, but more often from dirty hands, and through food. Disposal of the Chief Health Officer
Gennady Onishchenko, Russia to ban on the import and sale of nuts and dried fruits from Tajikistan. There are believed to physicians, polio
came from neighboring India and Afghanistan, or from Pakistan. In these countries, a special type of virus - a strain of type 1. Polio very
distributed in Africa. There, for many years are special UN program to vaccinate children. Completely eradicate polio in
world gathered in 2000, but so far unsuccessfully.
[Comment Cor VM. Commenting on an interview with chief doctor Russia Gennady Onishchenko can say the following: Polio virus isolated from
children who have arrived from Tajikistan is of Indian origin and refers to a second type. Immunity to this virus, in theory, could
be tense in children in Russia and in Ukraine, because in these countries used polyvalent live vaccine against polio.
But the certainty that this immunity will be enough to prevent the outbreak of the disease in Russia by G. Onishchenko no. It is likely
that need to be children and, possibly, adults spend an extra course Pulse vaccination living mono-or poly-vaccine
poliomyelitis.

Russia has confirmed its 1st polio case in 13 years in an infant
visiting from Tajikistan, but there is no immediate threat of a wider
outbreak, the country's main public health body said Friday [14 May
2010]. The 9-month-old girl was diagnosed with the disease after

Rospotrebnadzor spokeswoman Lyubov Voropayeva.

"All the necessary epidemiological measures have been taken. There is
not currently any threat the disease will spread," Voropayeva said.

Tests in a Moscow hospital found that a 2nd girl from Tajikistan,
also 9 months old, was carrying the polio virus but had not developed
the disease, Voropayeva said. The last case of polio was confirmed in

The 2nd case of poliomyelitis in 2 days was registered in Russia,
this time in the capital. In both cases, the virus was imported.
Today [13 May 2010] doctors have confirmed the diagnosis for a
9-month-old daughter of immigrants who came to Moscow from Tajikistan
in search for work. On [12 May 2010], the same diagnosis was
confirmed for a 9-month-old girl in Irkutsk, Siberia -- also a
daughter of recently arrived Tajik workers.

According to Russia's chief medical officer of health, Gennady
Onishchenko, now there is no danger for the lives of both children,
who have been given proper and timely medical help. However, there is
a risk that imported cases of poliomyelitis will affect the
epidemiological situation in the country.

"There is no need to worry, because we have taken all the necessary
measures to prevent an epidemic," Onishchenko underlined.

In order to fight the threat, Russian authorities have organized
additional vaccination of children in both countries and boosted
borderline quarantine control for passengers coming from Tajikistan
by all means of transport. All Tajik citizens currently in Russia
will be subjected to medical examination and vaccination.

The authorities have also introduced a temporary ban on Tajik
children under 6 entering the country until the end of the mass
immunization, which took off on [1 May 2010]. The measure does not
apply to Russian children temporarily residing in Tajikistan.
Moreover, Russian citizens are strongly recommended to leave the
country. Now more than 1000 Russian children -- mainly from officers'
families -- remain in the infected area.

On [5 May 2010], Russia banned the import of Tajik nuts and dried
fruits, which can contain the wild type of virus. The products
already in sale will be confiscated.

For their part, Tajik authorities prohibited children under 6 from
leaving the country. Only those immunized will be able to board
long-distance trains.

All in all, there have been 300 officially recognized cases of
poliomyelitis in Tajikistan. A total of 13 people have died. 90
percent of those infected are children under the age of 5.

Poliomyelitis is an acute viral infectious disease spread from person
to person. Around 90 percent of polio infections cause no symptoms at
all. However, in about 1 percent of cases the virus enters the
central nervous system, infecting and destroying motor neurons,
leading to muscle weakness and acute flaccid paralysis [the range of
paralytic vs non paralytic infections varies from 1 per 1000
infections to 1 per 200 infections - Mod.MPP].

There have been no cases of poliomyelitis in Russia for more than 14 years.

[The above newswire reports of 2 separate imported cases of polio
from Tajikistan admitted to hospitals in Russia for treatment serves
as a further reminder that we live in a global village and microbial
agents travel widely and rapidly. According to data available on the
WHO website, the Russian Federation reported that 98 percent of the
population less than one year of age had received 3 or more doses of
polio vaccine in 2008 (see Table on Russian Federation reported
immunization coverage available at
<http://www.who.int/immunization_monitoring/en/globalsummary/timeseries/tscoveragebycountry.cfm?C=RUS>).

Hence, unless the wild poliovirus (WPV) enters a geographic pocket of
unvaccinated individuals, the statement that the risk of a polio
outbreak in the Russian Federation is very low, is theoretically an
accurate statement. A qualification to this statement would be if
there had been as yet unrecognized problems in vaccine potency of the
vaccines distributed for routine vaccination activities. Of note,
according to data available on the WHO website, Tajikistan reported
that 87 percent of the population less than one year of age had
received 3 or more doses of polio vaccine in 2008
(see table on
Tajistan reported immuniation coverages
<http://www.who.int/immunization_monitoring/en/globalsummary/timeseries/tscoveragebycountry.cfm?C=TJK>.

The 2nd newswire above has information on a series of somewhat
Draconian measures that have questionable value in the interruption
of WPV transmission. First, a ban on importation of Tajik nuts and
dried fruits because they can "can contain the wild type of virus".
This moderator has not seen any publications in the scientific
literature that would support a claim that polio is transmitted
through contaminated dried fruits and nuts.

Second, banning the entry of Tajik children less than 6 years of age
until the vaccination campaigns have been completed, but permitting
the entry of Russian children less than 6 years of age coming from
Tajikistan during this period. This moderator has not seen any
publications in the scientific literature that would support a claim
that polio has a predilection for infecting one nationality more than
another nationality in the former Soviet bloc of countries.

One suspects that in the immediate "panic" phase of identification of
WPV infected individuals from Tajikistan in Russia, where there have
not been WPV infections identified in 14 years, the media is having a
"feeding frenzy" and perhaps putting words into Russian officials'
mouths leading to published declarations of measures that have
questionable impact.

Of note, according to the polio eradication website statistics, as of
Tue 11 May 2010, Tajikistan has confirmed 56 cases of polio since the
beginning of 2010 (see
<http://www.polioeradication.org/casecount.asp>), the highest number
of cases reported from any country this year to date.

For a map of the Russian Federation showing Irkutsk, Siberia in
relation to other Asian countries, see
<http://www.worldatlas.com/webimage/countrys/asia/ciamaps/ru.htm> and
<http://healthmap.org/r/01hF>. Irkutsk is near to the border with
Mongolia. While the article above does not mention the method of
transportation of these imported WPV infected individuals -- overland
vs by plane -- there is the suggestion from the 2nd article that the
means of transport may well have been by train. It would be of
interest to know what the overland route was to see which geographic
areas might have been at risk of WPV introduction along the way. - Mod.MPP

Two of nine girls [perhaps should read "Two nine-month old girls"?] from Tajikistan, hospitalized last week in the 1-st infectious diseases hospital with suspected polio, are carriers of the disease-causing virus. As it became known "MK", a dangerous symptom of the disease (paralysis or paresis - weakening of muscles) nor Roxana Shernaevoy nor Mahina Akramova not found. According to doctors, most likely the polio virus in their organisms and will not give themselves felt. It is noteworthy that both girls at home were vaccinated against polio.

Now crumbs are a danger to others, because they are contagious. The unfortunate virus lives in the little ones in the intestinal tract, oropharynx, nasopharynx. Girls are not allowed contact with anyone except their own mothers and doctors, as the main route of transmission of polio - airborne.

Now all arriving in Moscow, Tajik children who have no vaccination against polio, the checkpoint at the airport bury vaccine in the nose. And those who have it, send to a health facility, where do they get tested for polio, which is then sent to the Institute of Poliomyelitis im.M.Chumakova. If the results of the study are negative, they are discharged home. Sick children will be supplied in 1-st infectious diseases hospital.

In Moscow hospitalized 12 children in 3 polio detected

In the Moscow region 12 children not older than 6 years old were admitted to the hospital Domodedovo, Podolsk Chekhov and areas with suspected polio. It is reported by radio station Ekho Moskvy.

According to preliminary data, rapid tests 3 children from Tajikistan were positive. Currently, all the hospitalized people are under the supervision of physicians: samples are taken and implemented the necessary tests. If the final results of the tests confirmed polio in children, they will be sent back to Tajikistan.

Earlier in the Irkutsk Region and Moscow for the first time in Russia over the past 13 years have been recorded two cases of polio. In the first case was infected 9-month-old girl that parents had brought with them from Tajikistan in the Irkutsk region. Another girl from Tajikistan with suspected polio, was admitted to the first infectious diseases hospital in Moscow.

Perhaps this thread should be re-named as it is not one importation, but several, and not all in Irkutsk.

Initial symptoms are fever, fatigue, headache, nausea, stiff neck and pain in the limbs. One in 200 infections leads to irreversible paralysis (usually in the legs).
The most at risk of contracting the disease are children aged under five years.

The only measure of prevention - immunization against polio.

In Russia could return polio, plague and smallpox?

No matter how we abused vaccinations, they - the real protection against many infections.

Is it possible diseases that we have "definitively defeated", break out with renewed vigor, we find out with the experts

Alexander Kucuk - 19/05/2010

Poliomyelitis:

Carriers of the virus - THOUSANDS

This infection in Russia is not recorded for almost 15 years. WHO has long declared our country free from polio. And so last week - just five cases! Ill

9-month-old Tajik girl who had come to Moscow and Angarsk. Another three cases are checked in the suburbs.

Tajikistan (WHO also announced his polio free in 2002) confirmed nearly 400 cases, 15 children died.

People began to worry: Does not happen in Russia epidemic?

- This disease is frightening that in 1000 infected only one will be the clinical manifestations of the disease, that is, to begin the affected parts of the brain, paralysis, - says the Scientific Research Institute of Viral Preparations RAMS, Academician Yuri Hendon. - But the remaining 999 will be infected. And can infect children. In our country we are not vaccinated against polio around 1% of babies. These children are at risk. They urgently need to vaccination with live vaccine.

- Instill polio in Russia began in the early 60-ies - adds virologist . Igor Krasilnikov.. - People who were born earlier, are not vaccinated. But this virus is very contagious. It is quite possible that: Grandma picked, say, an infection of the market and gave her little grandson.

In addition to vaccinations, now stands:

abandon dried fruits and nuts of unknown origin

pour boiling water in general all products that are going to eat raw;

frequently wash their hands;

not to drink unboiled water.

Re: Irkutsk, Russia (ex Tajikistan): Confirmed polio importation

There is some suspicion that the three "cases" in the Moscow suburbs are not polio cases, but simply other enterovirus infections, in which case they are likely not AFP cases either.

Gennady Onishchenko: in the suburbs polio no!

Chief Sanitary Doctor of Russia has denied reports of a dangerous virus infecting three children from Tajikistan, hospitalized in Moscow region

Chapter Rosrotrebnadzora confirmed that Russia confirmed only two cases of polio Александра КУЧУК ? 19.05.2010 13:42 Alexander Kucuk - 19/05/2010 13:42

According to federal, and near Moscow medics, the children in the Moscow region was found still not polio, and enterovirus.

Re: Irkutsk, Russia (ex Tajikistan): Confirmed polio importation

While polio is an enterovirus, I believe what Dr. Onishenko is saying is that these cases were a non-polio enterovirus.

Information on cases of suspected polio recorded in the Moscow region, does not correspond to reality, said Gennady Onishchenko. Chapter Rospotrebnadzor noted that Russia found only two cases - in the capital and in the Irkutsk region. "All other calls are not baseless," - he added.

Reported cases of polio in Moscow refuted

Reports dated May 18, three cases of polio "are not baseless," said on Wednesday the chief sanitary doctor Gennady Onishchenko. Rospotrebnadzor quoted words of the head on Wednesday, Interfax reports.

May 18, Minister of Health, Moscow region, Vladimir Semyonov said that in the Domodedovo, Podolsk Chekhov district and suburbs have three children arrived from Tajikistan in the survey was suspected poliovirus.

A further survey information on the presence of poliovirus has not been confirmed. . Meanwhile, in hospitalized children in the Moscow region was detected enterovirus, GZT.RU reports quoting the press-secretary Rospotrebnadzora Love Voropayev.

Enteroviruses - a large group of viruses that infect the human intestine. Poliovirus is the most dangerous of them, because they contamination often leads to disability and death.

Thus, at present the territory of Russia reported two cases of polio - in the city of Angarsk, Irkutsk region and in Moscow In both cases the victims were nine-month-old Tajik girl.

Re: Irkutsk, Russia (ex Tajikistan): Confirmed polio importation

A ProMED Russian post. Enteroviruses are common pathogens worldwide; the detection of three (non-paralytic) cases of non-polio enterovirus infection ex Tajikistan doesn't seem like as big as some of these reports make it seem.

Obviously, there is no vaccine for non-polio enteroviruses.

Tajik children have found a place polio enterovirus
-------------------------------------------------- -------

For a survey and, if necessary, treatment of polio Tajik children will pay the Russian taxpayers: a coherent policy on treatment of foreigners in Russia do not exist.

Hospitalized for examination in a hospital near Moscow, three children, who arrived from Tajikistan, according to preliminary data, can be infected with polio, told reporters on May 18, Minister of Health, Moscow region, Vladimir Semenov. "The children were hospitalized after the requirements of chief state sanitary doctor of the Moscow region", - said Semyonov.

According to the Ministry of Health, Moscow region on May 17, all in the hospital near Moscow for examination for the presence of polio have been hospitalized for 12 children under 6 years of age with parents who arrived from Tajikistan. "Starting Friday, it was decided on compulsory hospitalization of children under 6 years old, arrived from Tajikistan to Moscow and its suburbs, to the infectious department of district hospitals Domodedovo, Podolsk Chekhov and regions", - said the media Vladimir Semenov.

In Rospotrebnadzor data on the possible diseases children are not confirmed. "The three children confirmed enterovirus, but no speeches about polio", - said GZT.RU Press Secretary Office Love Voropayeva. "The updated analysis prepares Institute of Poliomyelitis, as PCR positive for enterovirus," - answered the sanitary service of the Moscow region. In additional studies will take several more days.

Polimielito enterovirus-like

There is a separate group of "poliomielitopodobnyh" diseases characterized by acute flaccid paralysis. Comprehensive study organized MP Chumakov, the creator of the Russian vaccine and the Institute of Poliomyelitis and Viral Encephalitis RAMS, in the late 50-ies revealed that these cases may be caused by different enteroviruses (for details, see the journal "Eradicating polio» № 6 (24) November-December 2002 PM). In any case, only after additional research virologists understand whether Tajik healthy children.

Virus fly

Recall the first in Russia case of polio for many years of observation was recorded in Angarsk, a 9-month-old girl, arrived in Russia with his parents from Tajikistan in early May. Last week, with the aircraft arriving in the Krasnodar region of Tajikistan, were removed two children with suspected infection of polio, but their diagnosis was not confirmed. The second confirmed case occurred in Moscow, where he arrived with his parents - immigrants have one child, who was also hospitalized.

"All kids get sick in Russia a full course of treatment, from whatever country they came - said Lyubov Voropayeva .- With regard to medical treatment, a question not to Rospotrebnadzor. Other cases of poliomyelitis in Moscow has not been confirmed. Measures that are in health services in accordance with Russian law for the localization of infection is enough, believe in Rospotrebnadzor, and more, according to press secretary is not required.

To control the situation, as explained by chief medical officer of the Moscow region Rossoshans'ka Hope all arrived children from 6 to 15 years in the absence of data on vaccination, vaccinated directly to aid station Domodedovo airport. No contacts with the adult population, or children under the survey are not allowed. As clarified chief medical officer of the Moscow region, the vaccination coverage against polio in the Moscow region is 97-98%.

Now baby, who arrived in Irkutsk Region, treated in the infectious diseases hospital. Condition stable girl, but she already paralyzed facial nerve. On May 10, Russia imposed a ban on entry of Tajikistan, children under 6 years.

Poliomyelitis is strengthened Moscow
-------------------------------------------------- --------------
http://www.finansmag.ru/news/70919

In Moscow, three confirmed cases of polio in children from Tajikistan, said the Minister of Health, Moscow region, Vladimir Semenov.
In the suburbs, three children, arrived from Tajikistan, according to preliminary data, are infected with polio. Children hospitalized after prescription of chief state sanitary doctor of the Moscow region, said Vladimir Semyonov, according to Interfax.
According to the evening May 17 at a hospital near Moscow hospitalized 12 children under 6 years. On Friday a decision on compulsory hospitalization of children under 6 years old, arrived from Tajikistan to Moscow and Moscow region, in the infectious department of district hospitals Domodedovo, Podolsk Chekhov and regions.
Reminder: May 12 in Russia was officially confirmed the first case of polio. The virus was detected in 9-month-old girl who arrived with his parents from Tajikistan in Angarsk. In addition, the virus was isolated from four of its environment. May 13 Rospotrebnadzor laboratory confirmed the second case of polio in the territory of Russia. A case of the disease in Moscow on 9-month-old girl from Tajikistan.
According to WHO, in Russia polio are not vaccinated 1.5 million people. Vaccination - the only protection against polio, but Russia is not vaccinated around 1% of the population. In addition, Russia may be thousands of carriers of the disease.
In the Moscow region are more than 20 thousand citizens of Tajikistan, among them - 124 children under the age of 15 years.
In Tajikistan, confirmed about 400 cases of infection, 15 people died.
In late April Rospotrebnazdzor imposed control over the flights and trains from Tajikistan. In early May, the Office prohibited the import of dried fruits from Russia respuliki. Russian health service is also requested to take steps to proactively identify and remove from the realization in the retail market and trade of dried fruits and nuts, imported from that country.
May 6 Russian party has introduced a new ban - on entry into Russia from Tajikistan, children under 6 years of age. The ban will apply to the stabilization of the situation with polio or before the end of immunization in Tajikistan, all children under the age of six years.

[Comment Korr.VM. In Russia continue to register imported cases of polio in children, as well as cases of carriage "wild" polio virus in adults. Thus, according to latest official figures Rospotrebnadzor in 5 adults in Tajikistan isolated poliovirus in two children in Moscow and Irkutsk diagnosed with polio. In 12 children from the suburbs polivirus not been isolated, they have been found poliomielitopodobny [non-polio?] enterovirus, vaccination is currently in the world is not conducted.

It's hard to tell the extent of the risk of "wild" polio virus in Russia, where according to WHO (http://www.finansmag.ru/news/70919) nearly 1.5 million children may have no immunity to polio because of failures their parents from vaccination. According to statistics by 1 million vaccinations can 1 case of vaccine-assotsiiirovannogo poliomyelitis (VAP).
However, if combined with visual observation of children who came from Tajikistan to Moscow, stands out not "wild" poliovirus, and other types of enteroviruses, the impression of the existence of a dual flash once in Tajikistan, where both circulating polioviruses and enteroviruses other types. Tajik and Russian doctors to not only understand the situation, but also to hold adequate vaccination campaign and other necessary anti-epidemic meroprichyatiya to prevent the spread of dangerous diseases associated with flaccid paralysis in the territory of their countries. - Corr.VM]

Re: Irkutsk, Russia (ex Tajikistan): Confirmed polio importation

With respect to the three cases in Moscow's suburbs, this article is a bit old - the latest information (above) seems to be that they are three non-polio enterovirus infections, and not polio at all. Some type of correction might be forthcoming. There have been two other confirmed polio cases in this thread, though.

Also keep in mind that Russia has the facilities to diagnose non-paralytic cases of poliovirus infection, which Tajikistan does not, so case counts can be misleading. At least four contacts of the confirmed case in Irkutsk have apparently tested positive for poliovirus without showing symptoms.
