Visiting restrictions in place at Portiuncula

Posted on 08/03/2012
by Marie Madden

One ward at Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe has been closed to visitors due to an outbreak of the winter vomiting bug.

The Norovirus outbreak means that visitors will not be permitted to the St Joseph?s Ward until further notice. However, arrangements will be made for family members of critically ill patients and this should be arranged through the nurse on duty in the ward.

The situation is being reviewed on a daily basis and control measures to reduce the risk of Norovirus spreading to other patients and to other areas/departments within the hospital have been put in place.

BEAUMONT Hospital was under virtual lockdown as the winter vomiting bug took hold.

Strict visiting restrictions have been put in place at the hospital after 60 patients became infected.

Essential visits may only take place between 2pm and 4pm, and between 6pm and 8pm. And only one visitor is being allowed per patient.

Outbreaks of the highly contagious infection are already up nationwide this year, compared to the same period last year.
