Iraq has confirmed thousands more COVID-19 cases than reported, medics say

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraq has thousands of confirmed COVID-19 cases, many times more than the 772 it is has publicly reported, according to three doctors closely involved in the testing process, a health ministry official and a senior political official.

The sources all spoke on condition of anonymity. Iraqi authorities have instructed medical staff not to speak to media.

Iraq's health ministry, the only official outlet for information on the COVID-19 disease, could not immediately be reached for comment. Reuters sent voice and written messages asking its spokesman if the actual number of confirmed cases was higher than the ministry had reported and if so why.

The ministry said in its latest daily statement on Thursday that the total recorded confirmed cases for Iraq were 772, with 54 deaths...

Baghdad/Xinhua/UNI: Iraqi Health Ministry on Friday confirmed a total of 820 COVID-19 cases and up to 54 deaths across the country.

Out of the 48 cases confirmed during the past 24 hours, five in the Iraqi capital Baghdad, 12 in Dhi Qar, 11 in Sulaimaniyah, nine in Najaf, four in Basra, three in Erbil, one in the provinces of Kirkuk, Muthanna, Babil and Anbar each, the ministry said in a statement.

No deaths were registered during the day, according to the statement...

BAGHDAD, April 4 (Xinhua) -- Iraqi Health Ministry on Saturday confirmed two more deaths from COVID-19 and 58 new cases, as the total number of infections climbed to 878.

BAGHDAD, April 5 (Xinhua) -- Iraqi Health Ministry on Sunday confirmed 83 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total number of infections in the country to 961.

The death toll of the novel coronavirus reached 61, said the ministry in a statement.

Out of the 83 new cases confirmed during the past 24 hours, 27 are in the Iraqi capital Baghdad, 18 in Erbil, 10 in Basra, six in each of Muthanna and Najaf, five in Diyala, four in each of Karbala and Kirkuk, and one in each of the provinces of Sulaimaniyah, Babil and Dhi Qar, the ministry said.

So far, 961 cases have been confirmed in the country, of whom up to 61 have died and 279 others recovered, according to the statement.

BAGHDAD, April 6 (Xinhua) -- Iraqi Health Ministry on Monday said the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases has climbed to 1,031, and the death toll reached 64 in the country.

Out of the 70 cases confirmed during the past 24 hours, four are in the Iraqi capital Baghdad, 41 in Erbil, nine in Basra, seven in Dhi Qar, four in Najaf, three in Sulaimaniyah, two in Karbala, the ministry said in a statement.

Iraq's COVID-19 cases rise to 1,202

BAGHDAD, April 8 (Xinhua) -- Iraqi Health Ministry on Wednesday confirmed a total of 1,202 COVID-19 cases and up to 69 deaths from the virus across the country.

Of the 80 cases confirmed during the past 24 hours, 15 were detected in the Iraqi capital Baghdad, the ministry said in a statement.

So far, out of the total confirmed cases, 69 have died and 452 others recovered, according to the statement...

BAGHDAD, April 11 (Xinhua) -- Iraqi Health Ministry on Saturday said that a total of 1,318 COVID-19 cases were confirmed and up to 72 deaths were recorded in Iraq.

Of the 39 cases confirmed during the past 24 hours, 12 were detected in the Iraqi capital Baghdad, nine in Basra, and five in Kirkuk, the ministry said in a statement.

So far, out of the total confirmed cases, 72 died and 601 others recovered, according to the statement.

The Iraqi authorities have taken several measures to contain the spread of COVID-19, including extending a nationwide curfew until April 19.

Among the new cases were seven in the capital Baghdad, six in Basra, three each in Wasit and Diwaniyah, two each in Najaf, Babil and Dhi Qar, and one in Maysan, the ministry said in a statement.

(MENAFN - Trend News Agency) The Iraqi health ministry on Friday confirmed 48 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the total number in the country to 1,482, Trend reports citing Xinhua .

The 48 new cases during the past 24 hours were 14 in the capital Baghdad, 17 in Basra, 14 in Najaf, two in Sulaimaniyah and one in Karbala, the ministry said in a statement.

So far, 81 have died from the disease while 906 recovered, according to the statement.
