DUBAI — Iran said on Sunday that the new coronavirus has killed 113 people in the past 24 hours, raising the country’s death toll to 724, a health ministry official tweeted, adding that the number of infected people had reached 13,938.

Over the past 24 hours, 1,053 new cases of people having the virus have been identified, Deputy Health Minister Kianoush Jahanpour said, ISNA reported.

The highest number of new cases were reported from the provinces of Tehran, Isfahan, and Mazandaran with 200, 118, and 96 cases, respectively.

The new coronavirus has killed 135 more people in Iran, officials said – a 13% spike that raises the death toll to 988 amid 16,169 infections.

Iranian health ministry spokesman Kianoush Jahanpour released the figure during a televised news conference.

The death toll’s continued sharp increase is causing concern among experts that the outbreak in the Islamic Republic is far from being contained.

Among the worst-hit countries by the new coronavirus, Iran’s death toll has risen to 1,433, the state TV reported Friday.

Deputy Health Minister Alireza Reisi told the state TV that another 149 people died of the virus over the last 24 hours.

With 1,237 new cases in a day, the total number of confirmed cases hit 19,644, he added.

A total of 6,745 people have been discharged from hospitals after recovering from the virus, the official added.

A total of 123 people in Iran have died of coronavirus over the last 24 hours, pushing the death toll to 1,556, said Iranian health officials on Saturday.

A Health Ministry statement said 966 new virus cases were found, raising the number of cases to 20,610.

A total of 7,635 people who were treated for the virus have been discharged from hospitals to date, it added.

ISTANBUL

An infectious disease expert has warned of a "disaster" in Iran if the authorities failed to impose a travel ban during Nowruz, the Persian New Year holiday, to stem the spread of coronavirus.

Highlighting that the virus was spreading in Iran even faster than China, Masoud Mardani of the Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences said the authorities were slow to respond to the outbreak.

"The pandemic has spread to other cities from Qom because the city could not be isolated in a timely manner," said Mardani, who is also a member of the Iranian coronavirus science council.

He said between 100-150 people die and thousands get infected with the virus every day in Iran.

Mardani, however, claimed that the daily data announced by the country’s Health Ministry includes only the cases recorded in hospitals.

"The real figures could be higher than the official numbers," he said...

TEHRAN: Iran's official coronavirus death toll reached 2,757 on Monday and the number of infections crossed 40,000, as President Hassan Rouhani's political opponents slammed his response to the outbreak.

The Islamic republic is one of the countries worst hit by the virus, which originated in China.

Iran has been scrambling to contain COVID-19's spread since it reported its first cases on February 19.

After weeks of refraining from imposing lockdown or quarantine measures, Tehran decided Wednesday to ban all intercity travel until at least April 8, but some in the establishment have argued it is too little, too late.

Health ministry spokesman Kianoush Jahanpour said at a daily news briefing that 117 more people had died from the virus over the past 24 hours and 3,186 new cases had been confirmed.

According to Jahanpour, 13,911 of those hospitalised because of the virus have recovered, while 3,511 are in a critical condition.

There is no official lockdown in Iran's cities although the government has repeatedly urged Iranians to stay home to contain the spread of the virus...
