Sempat diberitakan, kedua pasien yang juga perawat itu pernah melakukan kontak langsung dengan suspect flu burung.

"Perawat itu ternyata bukan yang merawat pasien flu burung," tambah menteri spesialis jantung ini. (ism)

No reference anymore to the death of the nurses.

There have been prior reports in the past that have been wrong (by calling suspect or confirmed patients dead patients) or initial negative tests on infected patients.

The current status of the two nurses should be pretty clear, but the reports remain inconsistent.

The article like many others stressed that the suspect cases have a negative test. Do we have a approximation of the number of people who have died of bird flu had a negative initial test? My recall is that is more than 10%.

I'm sorry Thornton, I don't keep the statistics. My list I currently have takes in September, and Ida Khodijah (30) Adm: 9/18 to RSHS Bandung Sadikin in West Java died on 9/22, and tested negative.

The 12-year-old junior high school student from Tangerang, on Jakarta's southwestern outskirts, died after being treated for five days at Persahabatan Hospital - a designed bird-flu hospital in Jakarta - said Daswir Nurdin of the ministry's bird flu center.

"He was reported to have (had) contact with dead chickens close to his school," Nurdin said, adding that the boy first developed breathing problems and a fever on September 30 and initially visited a local clinic.

The boy was brought to Persahabatan on Tuesday, Nurdin said.

"His death raised Indonesia's death toll of bird flu to 88" deaths out of 109 cases, he said.

Indonesia has been hardest hit by the virus since it began ravaging poultry stocks across Asia in 2003. Its human death toll now accounts for almost half of the recorded 200 fatalities worldwide, according to the World Health Organization.

This Okezone report is pretty confusing.

Either this was an error in reporting and this is Okezone's way of retracting the story -- without correction (very helpful).

Or, there's something to the whole story.

One other big "error" (if it was an error) in Indonesian reporting that I can think of happened back in January of this year -- MetroTVNews reported that Ani Afriani (confirmed bf case) was the daughter of Riyah (confirmed bf case), which would've made that cluster much larger than it already was:

JAKARTA (AFP) - A 12-year-old Indonesian boy died of bird flu Saturday, raising the toll in the nation worst affected by avian flu to 88, the health ministry said.

The boy, who tested positive for the H5N1 virus, died in a hospital here at 7:30 am (0030 GMT), said Nirwan, a staffer on duty at the health ministry's bird flu information centre.

"Medical doctors at the hospital were meeting to discuss his case, since he showed great improvement in his health condition, with his white-blood cell count rising, but the boy suddenly died at 7:30 this morning," said Nirwan.

Results of two tests on blood and saliva samples taken from the boy on Thursday showed he was infected by the deadly H5N1 strain, making him the country's 109th confirmed human bird flu infection case, of which 88 have died.

The boy, only identified by his initials IR, first showed symptoms of bird flu on September 30 but was only admitted to hospital in Tangerang, just west of here, on October 8.

He was transferred to Persahabatan Hospital in Jakarta a day later.

Two tests, usually of samples of blood and tissue, must come back positive for the virus before a victim is confirmed as infected in Indonesia, where the death toll of 88 from avian influenza is the highest in the world.

"The boy had a history of contact with a dead infected chicken near his school," Nirwan said.

H5N1 is widespread in poultry across Indonesia's sprawling archipelago.

The child, identified as Irfan, was brought to a local midwife on Oct. 3 after suffering from fever for three days, Head of Communicable Disease Control and Prevention Section at the Tangerang District Health Office dr Yuliah Iskandar said on Monday.

As his health condition deteriorated, Irfan was later transferred to Tangerang Regional Hospital where he underwent a medical test on Oct. 8, Yuliah said.

He was later moved to Persahabatan Hospital in Jakarta on Oct. 9 for further medical treatment as he had tested positive for bird flu based on the result of a laboratory test conducted by the Health Research and Development Agency and the Eijkmann Institute, she said.

To anticipate the possible spread of the H5N1 virus in the area, the district health office had sent officers to Ceger village to take samples of the blood of Irfan`s relatives and neighbors, she said.

Yuliah said Irfan did not have contact with dead chicken before being infected with the bird flu virus. Neither did his parents raise poultry in their backyard.
