JAKARTA, Oct 23 (Reuters) - An Indonesian toddler from Tangerang, west of the capital Jakarta, has died of bird flu, bringing the country's death toll from the disease to 89, a health ministry official said on Tuesday.

The four-year-old girl died on Monday after being admitted to hospital two days earlier, health ministry spokeswoman Lili Sulistyowati said by telephone.

The girl, who had been suffering from fever, died after being transferred to Persahabatan hospital in Jakarta.

Officials were still investigating the case, but four chickens had previously died in the girl's neighbourhood, another official at the ministry's bird flu centre said.

Contact with sick fowl is the most common way for humans to contract the deadly H5N1 strain of the virus.

Bird flu is endemic in bird populations in most parts of Indonesia, where millions of backyard chickens live in close proximity with humans.

Indonesia, which has now had 110 confirmed cases of the disease in humans, has suffered more fatalities than any other country.

Including the latest case, there have been 204 deaths and 332 cases globally since 2003, according to World Health Organisation data.

Experts fear if an easy means of transmission from human to human develops, there might be a pandemic affecting millions.

O.K. I just went over previous threads, and I can not find an article that says Irfan is from Pasarkemis. I have it written down in my notes, but I have no idea where I got it from.
So. Irfan is from Cegar, Sepatan, Tangerang.
Dewi is from Suka Asih Village, Pasarkemis, Tangerang.

The four-year-old girl from Tangerang on the western outskirts of the capital, Jakarta died on Monday after hospitalized for two days, said Nyoman Kandun.

"Tests from two local laboratories came back positive," he said.

The girl first showed bird flu like symptoms on Oct. 13, said Kandun adding that health investigators concluded she had contact with dead poultry in her neighborhood.

Indonesia has been the country hardest-hit by the virus since it began ravaging poultry stocks across Asia in 2003.

Indonesia's human death toll from the illness now accounts for almost half of the recorded 203 fatalities worldwide, according to the World Health Organization.

The girl was the fourth Indonesian killed by the disease this month. A 21-year-old man, a 44-year-old woman and a 12-year-old boy died earlier.
