From East Java; the patients are not in hospital, still in the local Community Health Center; apparently they are responding to Tamiflu. Earlier another 23 villagers experienced the same symtoms.

Well that seems to be the strategy: put symptomatic patients on Tamiflu, if they do no respond to it, reconcile them to a hospital.

Thirty-two year old Solihin was the second suspected bird flu patient to die in the last month following the death of two-and-a-half year old Wahyu Ibnu Saputra on March 27. The latter's test results showed he had definitely been infected by the deadly virus strain.

Head of the Bird Flu Response Team at the hospital, Azizman Saad, said Solihin had been treated at the bird flu isolation ward since early last week but died Wednesday evening, despite his condition improving a day before he died.

"But his condition suddenly worsened in the evening and he gradually became weak. His life could not be saved although the medical team tried to revive him with a ventilator," Azizman told The Jakarta Post on Thursday.

Azizman could not confirm the cause of Solihin's death because the hospital had not yet received test results of blood and liquid samples sent for processing in Jakarta last Monday.

"For the time being until the results are returned, the medical team has concluded the patient died of breathing failure." - JP

Dr CA Nidom, Head of Avian Influenza Laboratory Airlangga University (UNAIR) said pig flu is combination of certain viruses in pig’s body. This is categorized as weak virus, but when the viruses mixed inside pig’s body, it’s possible to mutate to deadly strain.

In general, bird flu is more dangerous compare to pig flu. But the death caused by pig flu may occur faster since it has been rapidly infecting human.
Nidom said, according to their study until now there is no local pig in Indonesia that has Mexico pig flu strain. Pig flu also can be treated with Tamiflu, a bird flu drug.

His laboratory in UNAIR will keep studying the spreading of this virus.

Hospital treats three suspected bird flu patients

Andi Hajramurni , The Jakarta Post , Makassar | Thu, 04/30/2009 3:14 PM | The Archipelago

Wahidin Sudirohusodo Hospital in Makassar, South Sulawesi, has over the past week been treating three patients from Nipa-nipa, Manggala district, suffering from an illness with bird flu-like symptoms.

Hospital medical director Abdul Kadir confirmed Wednesday the patients had high fevers of up to 39 degrees Celsius when they were admitted to the hospital. They were also coughing and feared to be infected by the H5N1 virus.

"Before they fell ill, several chickens in their neighborhoods suddenly died from suspected bird flu. That's why these people were admitted to hospital to get special treatment according to standard bird flu procedures," Kadir said.

He added blood samples from two of the patients, who are children, had been sent to the research and development lab at the Health Ministry in Jakarta for analysis.

As of Wednesday, the conditions of the three patients, who are being treated at the isolation ward, had improved, with their temperatures stabilizing, but hospital authorities will keep them in isolation pending the test results.

"Their conditions have improved, but we have not yet allowed them to go home and they still have to be isolated," Kadir said.

Wahidin Sudirohusodo Hospital has treated five suspected bird flu patients between January and April this year, two of whom, from Bone regency, South Sulawesi, were found not to have been infected.

Between 2005 and April this year, hospitals in the province have treated a total of 130 patients suspected of being infected with bird flu. Only one of them, who tested positive for the virus, later died.

Hospital director Andi Nursyanti Sapada said medicine supplies and equipment, including protective gear for medical workers, were still sufficient for the moment. She added beds were limited because the hospital only has 10 beds available in the special ward. She also said the construction of a building to accommodate patients suffering from infectious disease, including bird flu, was in its finishing stages.

On Tuesday, the Jember regency administration in East Java announced the bird flu virus had spread to 17 of its 31 districts.
