JAKARTA - Indonesia has estimated that the number of people who have had possible contact with Covid-19 suspects to be at more than half a million, the authorities said on Friday (March 20), as the government started rapid testing for the virus on its population.

This “high risk” group of between 600,000 and 700,000 people are scattered across the country, with South Jakarta being the worst-hit, the authorities said.

Earlier President Joko Widodo in a statement broadcast live on national television had said Indonesia started rapid testing for the virus on Friday afternoon, .

A doctor working at Bali’s main hospital, where a British tourist died after contracting coronavirus, has now tested positive to the virus.

Authorities have confirmed the doctor, who was studying at a Bali university and working at Sanglah hospital, has tested positive upon his return to his native Surabaya, in East Java.

It is the first confirmed case of a medical professional testing positive to COVID-19 in a Bali hospital since the outbreak began.

And it comes as Indonesia’s infection rate spirals, after so long with no confirmed cases, and the death rate from coronavirus is now higher in Indonesian than in other countries.

Indonesia's death toll from COVID-19 has risen to 32 with 369 cases reported nationwide on Friday, as the novel coronavirus spread to 17 of the country's provinces, half of the total 34 provinces in the archipelago.

Health Ministry Disease Control and Prevention Director General Achmad Yurianto said most fatal cases occurred in Jakarta, which recorded one new death as of Friday, bringing the total fatalities in the capital -- the hardest-hit by coronavirus in Indonesia -- to 18.

West Java, meanwhile, recorded its biggest jump yet to date with six new reported deaths within a day, bringing the total to seven fatalities as of Friday.

Indonesia on Wednesday confirmed a total of 790 positive cases of the coronavirus.

"There have been 105 new [coronavirus] cases in various provinces since yesterday afternoon, bringing the total number of cases to 790 cases today," said Achmad Yurianto, the government’s spokesman for coronavirus-related matters.

He also mentioned that one person has recovered from the coronavirus infection, taking the total cases of recovered to 31 cases.

Indonesian health authorities have confirmed 1,046 COVID-19 positive cases as of Friday, an increase of 153 from the previous count a day earlier.

The number of fatalities caused by the disease has also risen by nine cases to 87. Meanwhile, the number of people having recovered from COVID-19 has also increased to 46.

JAKARTA (Reuters) - Indonesia confirmed 130 new coronavirus infections on Sunday, taking the total in the Southeast Asian country to 1,285, a health ministry official said on Sunday.

Twelve more people had died from the virus, bringing the death toll to 144, Achmad Yurianto, the official, said. Sixty-four people had recovered, he added.
