Indiana/Ohio: Two Siblings Die of Swine Flu, ages 19 & 26

Re: Indiana/Ohio: Doctors investigating mysterious death of man and critical illness of his sister

Re: Indiana/Ohio: Doctors investigating mysterious death of man and critical illness of his sister

No. It was Mindy, the sister who tested positive for flu. One report indicates that Kristine, the singer, was released, but another one mentions that her symptoms were looking more like Matt and Mindy's. I think all four people likely have the same illness, and it is more likely than not Pandemic H1N1. It is not clear to me the status of either Kristine or Matt's father.

I believe this is new and related to this case:

New Information:
The Hamilton County Coroner's office tells Local 12 that samples taken from a 19 year old Dearborn County, Indiana man and sent to the Indiana Department of Health for analysis show the musician died of the H1N1 virus, also known as Swine Flu.

19-year-old Matt Mcintosh, known as "Skinny" died Sunday, July 5 at University Hospital after first feeling ill two weeks ago. His sister Mindy, who is 26, has been at University Hospital with the same symptoms... pneumonia and kidney failure.

The two lived with their parents in Moores Hills, which is in rural Dearborn County, Indiana. Matt was found passed out in a barn on June 28th. He spent two days in a Dearborn County Hospital and was airlifted to University Hospital in Cincinnati on June 30th.

Matt Mcintosh was the drummer in the rock band "Strange on Display". A woman who sings with the band also got sick... so did Mcintosh's father. Doctors say it's unrelated.

The news comes hours after McIntosh's funeral. McIntosh's death is the first reported death from H1N1 in Hamilton County. Local 12 is following this developing story and we'll post new information here as soon as it is available.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Indiana is reporting its first swine flu death.

The state Department of Health said Friday that a resident of Dearborn County in southeastern Indiana died from complications related to the pandemic H1N1 influenza.

The department says it won't release any other information about the person for confidentiality reasons.

Health officials are working with the Dearborn County Health Department to investigate and have already contacted people who might have been exposed to the case.

Indiana has reported more than 250 confirmed cases of the swine flu and more than 30 people have been hospitalized since April.

U.S. health officials say the number of swine flu cases has surpassed 37,000 and more than 200 people have died.

Yeah. I feel like we actually knew these people. I don't think I like knowing that much about these people.

I interpret the bold statement to mean that those cases were mild, not that they aren't H1N1. The blue statement is tragic - the fact that he was found passed out in the barn probably threw doctors off teh track of the disease and caused them (and me) to suspect hantavirus, instead of H1N1.

INDIANAPOLIS (WKRC/WISH) - The Indiana Department of Health confirmed a report late Friday afternoon that an Indiana man died from the H1N1 virus. The department said state health officials are working closely with the Dearborn County Health Department to investigate the case and have already communicated with all close contacts and health care providers who might have been exposed to the case.

WKRC in Cincinnati, Ohio reported Friday that -- according to an Ohio coroner's office -- samples taken from 19-year-old Matt McIntosh and sent to the Indiana Department of Health show McIntosh died of H1N1.

McIntosh, known as "Skinny" died Sunday, July 5 at University Hospital in Cincinnati after first feeling ill two weeks ago. His sister Mindy, who is 26, has been at University Hospital with the same symptoms: pneumonia and kidney failure.

McIntosh is the first death linked to H1N1 in Indiana.

McIntosh and his sister lived with their parents in Moores Hills, which is in rural Dearborn County in eastern Indiana. Matt was found passed out in a barn on June 28. He spent two days in a Dearborn County Hospital and was airlifted to University Hospital in Cincinnati on June 30.

Matt McIntosh was the drummer in the rock band "Strange on Display". A woman who sings with the band also got sick, so did McIntosh's father. Doctors say their illnesses are unrelated.
The news comes hours after McIntosh's funeral.

First Ohio H1N1 Death In Butler Co.
Hamilton County Coroner O'dell Owens and the Hamilton County Health Department have confirmed the first H1N1 virus death in the county.

Matthew "Skinny" McIntosh, 19, was found in a barn near his home in Moores Hill, Indiana on June 28. He was taken to University Hospital on June 30. He died at the hospital on July 5.

University Hospital reports that his sister, Melinda McIntosh, 26, remains in critical condition.

Kristine Spielmann, a friend who also became sick, was released from University Hospital on Tuesday.

Friends thought all three may have possibly gotten sick after cleaning out a shed.

Owens says they have notified the Indiana Health Department thatMcIntosh had a confirmed case of the virus also known as the Swine Flu.

The Indiana State Health Commissioner, Judy Monroe, M.D., says health officials are working to investigate and talk with people who may have been exposed to the case.

?I would like to extend my sympathies to the family for their loss,? said Dr. Monroe. ?We know the virus is still circulating in the state, and we have been concerned that there would be fatalities.?

A 40-year-old Butler County man died from the H1N1 virus on June 29. The Ohio Department of Health says it was the first death in Ohio related to the pandemic strain of the H1N1 virus.

On June 11, 2009, the World Health Organization or WHO declared a global pandemic of H1N1 virus was underway by raising the worldwide pandemic alert level to Phase 6. At the time, more than 70 countries had reported cases of virus.

Over 300 people have died from the virus worldwide according to the World Health Organization. There have been 170 H1N1 related deaths in the United States. Around 3,000 people have been hospitalized related to the virus.

The ODH encourages Ohioans to take the following actions to help stay healthy:

?Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
?Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. alcohol-based hand sanitizers are also effective.
?Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.
?Stay home if you get sick to limit contact with others and the spread of disease.
As of Wednesday, July 10, the ODH was reporting 147 confirmed and probable cases of the virus in Ohio. Indiana has 273 confirmed and probable cases of H1N1

You can get more information at the ODH Web site, or by calling the toll-free H1N1 information line at 1-866-800-1404 Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m..

Re: Indiana/Ohio: Doctors investigating H1N1 death of man and critical illness of his sister

I wonder if this will be a critical change point in this pandemic and in Flublogia in general. In general, all we get as far as patient identifiers is initials and age and gender. This is usually both because of privacy (where was HIPAA here?), as well as the fact that many outbreaks occur in remote locations with limited technology, let alone internet access. These people had MySpace pages.

If there wasn't a pandemic going on, I would view this as an anomaly that one undiagnosed outbreak happened to occur in a major American city. But there is a pandemic going on, and I think we will be getting far more information about some of its victims. And this is going to be a little disturbing.

The video at this link says that H1N1 was confirmed in Matt, but tests are still pending on Mindy. Given that her symptoms matched Matt's, AND that she rapid tested positive for influenza A, she is definitely going to be positive.

Fortunately, the video also says she is doing a little better.

If their band had not been named, it would have been much harder to find their myspace pages. Interesting what a little bit of info can provide.

I too hope for a speedy recovery for everyone.

first time I read this, thought his mom picked him up at a performance? Was it in a barn?

A University of Cincinnati Hospital spokesperson says an initial swab came back negative for H1N1. The longer culture sample turned out to be positive. The sample has been sent to the Indiana Department of Health, which will identify the strain.

The news comes hours after McIntosh's funeral. McIntosh's death is the first reported death from H1N1 in Hamilton County.

I am amazed that if they suspected H1N1 in Matt, why they didn't immediately begin antiviral treatment in his sister, instead of waiting for the test results to come back. They might have lost as much as a week from the time they were hospitalized until they began treatment, according to the details in the article.

I have to agree. Maybe I haven't read enough threads recently, but it upsets me that they continued to rule out swine flu, even after the influenza A test. My trust in some authorities is dwindling.

 The lack of information dissemination could cost people their lives.

If I get this thing, the first question I'll ask any doctor is, "Have you ever heard of FluTrackers.com"? If he/she says "What Trackers?, I'll get my laptop and have him/her sit for a spell, even if I have to pay extra.

Mysterious illness kills Moores Hill musician
By Erika Schmidt Russell
News Editor

Matthew ?Skinny? McIntosh was a young man who had his life before him. He loved music and food, food and music, according to his MySpace page and his mother Katrina McIntosh.
He died of unknown causes Sunday, July 5, less than a month before his 20th birthday.
?He was my baby,? said his mother.

?Skinny? as everyone knew him was the drummer of the increasingly popular band Strange on Display. A 2008 graduate of South Dearborn High School, the teen became ill Wednesday, June 24, with a fever, said Katrina McIntosh, Moores Hill.
He and the band played a graduation party Saturday, June 27.
?He called me and asked me to come get him. He said he didn?t feel good. He said he just wanted to sleep,? she said.
The next morning he was coughing and she tried to convince him to go to the hospital. ?And he still was telling me he wanted to sleep. Then he coughed up blood, and finally agreed to let me take him to the hospital,? she said.

He was in Dearborn County Hospital until Tuesday, June 30, when he was AirCared to University Hospital, Cincinnati.

His sister, Mindy, 26, meanwhile, also had been admitted to the hospital with similar symptoms. After being transferred to University, she was in a regular room for a day, then placed in the intensive care unit, where she has remained on a ventilator since Wednesday, July 1, said Katrina McIntosh.
?We haven?t told her. The doctors told us not to. They don?t think she could take it. Survivor?s guilt,? said McIntosh.

Any number of possible diagnosis have been brought up, tested for and then dismissed after tests came back negative, said McIntosh.

?They?ve tested for every kind of flu, and they?ve all been negative,? she said, adding doctors also considered ?that bird thingy? hystoplasmosis.

A doctor at Dearborn County Hospital told the family he had never seen anything move so fast, as it did in the McIntosh children.

Although rumors are circulating that the McIntoshes became ill after cleaning a barn at the Moores Hill family?s home, ?my husband is in there all the time. That?s where his tractor is, and he works on cars out there,? said McIntosh.

Meanwhile, fellow Strange on Display bandmate Kristine Spielmann also is in University Hospital along with her sister Regina.

The Spielmann girls are hospitalized as a precaution, and have tested positive for the flu, said their father Tom Spielmann.

?As long as nothing else materialized and she does OK, they said she could come home Wednesday,? he said.

Although she?s informed him that no matter what she will leave the hospital Thursday so she can attend McIntosh?s services Thursday night and Friday morning, said Tom Spielmann.

Kristine Spielmann along with Strange on Display bandmates Mike Dittmer and Jimmy Wenstrup were slated to play at the Aurora Firecracker Festival Saturday night, July 4, for an early show, and then at Riverhouse in Rising Sun. The firecracker festival was rained out, but the band played without Skinny at Riverhouse.

?It was hard. And they are going to retire the name Strange on Display,? and anything else, they don?t know, said Kristine Spielmann.

Doctors are continuing tests and trying to find common denominators between Skinny and Mindy. An autopsy on Skinny has been completed, ?but we don?t have any results back yet,? said Katrina McIntosh.

Dittmer and Wenstrup, like Katrina McIntosh, hope doctors can find out what killed Skinny so Mindy can be cured.

The bandmates are planning music - rock and roll of course - and are going to set up his drum kit at Skinny?s visitation, said Wenstrup.
Skinny came up with the band?s name when they signed up for a battle of the bands competition for the 2004 Lawrenceburg Fall Fest.
?We were on the phone signing up and they asked the band?s name and Mike was like ?what?s our name?? And Skinny just spouted it off,? said Wenstrup.
?He was like Animal from the Muppets. He just banged away at those drums,? said Wenstrup.
?He was just a big, ol? jiggly ball of fun,? said Dittmer.
The band won the ?04 Fall Fest battle, of course they had spent all summer together.
?We jammed, and ate pizza, and crashed on the living room floor and swam. It was great,? said Dittmer.
Skinny loved music and in the hospital managed to get across to his mom he wanted to listen to his iPod.
?He calmed down when the music came on, there was Coldplay on it and even some country music. He didn?t like country music, but it calmed him down,? said Katrina McIntosh, adding her son?s smile could light up a room.
His favorite bands were Alkaline Trio, The Doors, Led Zepplin, Pink Floyd and ?he was really into jazz and the blues,? said Wenstrup.
Skinny?s illness, hospitalization and death have been hard to deal with.
?I?m kind of confused ...? said Wenstrup.
?... Numb and lost too,? interrupted Dittmer. ?... But we?re hopeful....?
Dittmer and Wenstrup are planning a benefit for what would have been Skinny?s 20th birthday Saturday, Aug. 1. Look for details in upcoming editions of The Journal-Press and The Dearborn County Register. See a Strange on Display and Kristine Spielmann video at www.thedcregister.com.
And the rain-delayed fireworks going off Sunday night, July 5, sounded like drumming from heaven.
