I have a daughter who is Mindy's age, 26.

All best wishes and thoughts to Mindy and the fight she is waging.

A bit of Matt's contact history, and some more linked milder cases. Assuming that last line is an unlinked case and isn't a reference to new tests done on Mindy, there is likely a lot of H1N1 in the area.

Liz Bonis story on stopping the spread of H1N1
It's been a week since 19-year-old Matt Mcintosh died of swine flu. Today, Indiana health officials confirmed three other H1N1 flu cases in Dearborn County.

Just exactly where Mcintosh caught the flu and who else might have been infected is still a mystery. Mcintosh's 26-year-old sister Mindy remains in critical condition at University Hospital with the same symptoms that killed her brother. Local 12's Joe Webb spent the day in Dearborn County where people who knew them are wondering who is trying to solve the mystery.

Before his death, Matt "Skinny" Mcintosh was best known as the drummer of the Aurora band "Strange on Display". The last two days before he went to the hospital he played two gigs with the band, Friday June 26th at Hummers in Aurora, and the next night at Bob Tiettmeyer's Lawrenceburg home for his daughter's graduation party. He had trouble performing.

Bob Tiettmeyer of Lawrenceburg, "Yea, he was real sick. Wasn't feeling good. He was trying to keep up and he kept apologizing to me saying, 'Sorry, Bob for ruining your party.' I said, 'just get better'. We had no idea he was that sick."

At both places, Mcintosh was in the time frame when he could have been contagious. But so far, neither the bar nor Tiettmeyer have been contacted by health officials. "No, haven't heard anything from the health department, city or the state or county anything at all."

"Nope, not a word. It surprises me a little bit, especially with it being the first case around here."

Tiettmeyer even put together a list of people at the party, but hasn't been contacted.

We contacted the Dearborn County Health Department who referred us to the Indiana State Health Department. They said an investigation is underway but wouldn't elaborate.

The Drahmans say no one from the bar got sick. Tiettmeyer says he's been taking Tamiflu to deal with some a sore throat and congestion, and his daughter's been sick. They want answers. "She's still been having some pains, side pains and stuff like that, and she's really paranoid and scared." And curious as to just what's going on and who's looking into it in Dearborn County.

University Hospital confirms tonight that they have had one other confirmed case of swine flu at the hospital in the last two weeks. They say that case was confirmed by the Indiana Department of Health.

The bold text is good news, but the discussion of isolation in this article is a bad sign. The hospital did not isolate these cases in any real sense.

Stopping the Spread of H1N1 Virus

Joe Webb's story on Indiana investigation into Dearborn County cases
The Swine Flu death of an Indiana teenager has some wondering what's being done to figure out where he caught it and if it spread to anyone else. Mindy Mcintosh clings to life at University Hospital. She is considered a probable case of H1N1 flu since her brother Matt died from the virus last week. Today, Local 12 medical reporter Liz Bonis found it's up to us to prevent the spread of this potentially deadly infection.

Liz talked to Mindy's mom, and she gave us permission to share with you that she made it through the weekend and they are cautiously optimistic. They are continuing to ask for our prayers, and in the mean time, doing everything they can for her here and preventing the spread of any flu, including H1N1.

It starts with instruction the second you enter the hospital. To stop the spread of this virus: cover your cough and wash your hands. But with Matt Mcintoshs' recent death from H1N1 and his sister Mindy's probable case, you can bet the staff here is taking no chances. "What we do is when somebody comes in sick or with respiratory illness to the hospital, we ask them to wear a mask, and if they are admitted, we actually admit them directly into isolation, that way our staff is protected if they do come down with something," says Francine Kidd, University Hospital Infection Control.

"So we were told in this case they were in isolation. What does that mean?" Nurse says: "They actually were in more isolation than what I was just talking about, and that's because we didn't know what was wrong with them."

If you were in the hospital, or think you may have come in contact with anyone with this virus, Francine Kidd says keep this in mind: "The seven day window, up to seven days if you've been exposed, so someone and you've gone seven days and you haven't gotten sick, you're probably okay."

This is the virus that has been hitting young people hard, so all of us need to be vigilant if you have a fever or body aches. That's what separates this one from just a respiratory virus, or allergies or a cold. If you do notice those symptoms, make sure you see your doctor to be tested, and they can tell you about any appropriate intervention.

Last week, the Indiana Department of Health told us they were contacting everyone who might have been exposed to H1N1 by the Mcintosh's.

Health Officials Urging Caution Following Local Swine Flu Death
Health Officials Urging Caution Following Local Swine Flu Death
State health officials are urging Hoosiers to be cautious following the state's first death by the swine flu.

Indiana State Department of Health Commissioner Judy Monroe reports a Dearborn County resident died a little more than a week ago from complications related to the H1N1 virus.

19 year old Matt McIntosh of Moores Hill was taken to University Hospital in Cincinnati in late June. He died July 5. Initial swabs were negative, but the longer culture showed it to be the h1n1 virus.

His sister, 26 year old Melinda Mcintosh, is currently in critical condition at university of Cincinnati hospital for similar symptoms, according to the Dearborn County Register. Her mother, Katrina McIntosh, reported last week that her kidneys have failed and lungs filled with fluid. Katrina McIntosh was not panicking at the time. She is immune compromised herself and has rheumatoid arthritis but is not sick.

Just two weeks ago, Southeast Indiana had it's first confirmed cases of H1n1 in the state from a camp in Switzerland County. It shut down for a week.

A benefit was held over the weekend in Dillsboro in honor of Matt McIntosh. He was a well liked musician in the area and hundreds turned out for his funeral Friday.

Dr. Judy Monroe expressed her sympathies to the family. "I would like to extend my sympathies to the family for their loss...This is the first death linked to this novel flu virus. We know the virus has been circulating in the state.... Influenza is also serious and has potential to cause serious disease or even death."

She also advised people to be cautious and practice good hygeine.
Monroe says there have so far been 170-deaths nationally related to the pandemic H1N1 virus.
She said it?s important to always practive the three c?s: clean, cover and contain.

Symptons appear two to seven days after exposure.

IN, Dearborn Health Departments Investigating H1N1
Posted at 8:27 am on Monday, July 13, 2009 by Mike Perleberg
(Lawrenceburg, IN) - After news broke of a flu pandemic a couple months ago, most people in southeast Indiana perhaps dismissed the threat.
On July 5, a 19-year-old Moores Hill resident died from H1N1 influenza - better known as the swine flu - reawakening fears locally.

Indiana State Health Commissioner Dr. Judy Monroe broke news of Indiana's first H1N1 death on Friday afternoon. Hamilton County Coroner Dr. O'Dell Owens announced through various media outlets that the victim was Matt "Skinny" McIntosh.

"I would like to extend my sympathies to the family for their loss," said Dr. Monroe. "We know the virus is still circulating in the state, and we have been concerned that there would be fatalities. Influenza always has the potential to cause serious disease or even death."

Doctors for about a week were not sure what caused the teenager to become so ill, but say they never ruled out the possibility of the swine flu. Intial tests were negative for the disease, but longer tests came back positive.

State health officials are working closely with the Dearborn County Health Department to investigate the case and have already communicated with all close contacts and health care providers who might have been exposed to the case.

Matt's sister, Mindy MacIntosh, is still hospitalized with a probable case of the swine flu. Her mother Katrina McIntosh said late last week that Mindy was still in critical condition.

"The death of this individual does not change our message to the public, which is to practice normal precautions to avoid influenza and other respiratory diseases. If you have milder symptoms of influenza, we advise you to stay home and contact your health care provider for advice," said Dr. Monroe.

According to the Indiana State Department of Health, there have been 170 deaths related to the pandemic H1N1 flu nationally. Each year, about 36,000 people in the United States die from complications of seasonal influenza.

Sister Of Man Who Died From H1N1 Recovering From Similar Symptons
The sister of the Moores Hill man who died from complications of H1N1 is also suffering from similar symptoms.

Melinda McIntosh, 26, has been in the hospital on a ventilator and dialysis machine, but her mother, Katrina McIntosh told the Dearborn Journal Press she is doing better as of Monday.

Although still critical her stats are better and her blood pressure is up.

Mrs. Mcintosh said they were shocked to find out the cause of their son?s death, but relieved to know what it was. Matt Mcintosh had been tested for the swine flu, but initially the results came back negative. It wasn?t until after he died they learned why.

Katrina McIntosh clarified that Matt was not found passed out in a barn. She took him to the hospital June 28 after he had coughed up blood.

The Mcintosh family thanks the community for their recent support during this tragic time. The funeral was standing room only, and a benefit in honor of their son, a musician, over the weekend raised $2400.

Another fundraiser is planned for August 1, what would have been Matt?s 20th birthday.

If you missed last Saturday?s fundraiser, and would like to help the family, an account is being set up at Friendship State Bank, with branches in Dillsboro, Rising Sun, Friendship, Versailles, Batesville, Cross Plains and Vevay.

This was the first death in Indiana from the swine flu.

(Dearborn County, IN) - Three more cases of the novel H1N1 influenza, better known as swine flu, have been confirmed in Dearborn County.
That makes five total cases in the county since two siblings from Moores Hill - 19-year-old Matt McIntosh and 26-year-old Melinda "Mindy" McIntosh - were diagnosed last week.

The Indiana State Department of Health is not releasing the names of the people with the new cases in order to protect their privacy. The hospitals where they were treated are also being kept confidential.

Click here for tips on how to spot and prevent the spread of H1N1.

With these newest cases, Indiana's total H1N1 confirmations are about 280 since April 20.

Before the swine flu was confirmed in a Dearborn County resident last week, the closest the disease had come geographically was in a Boone County, Kentucky woman in June.

One local woman battling a likely case of H1N1 is still in critical care at University of Cincinnati Hospital.

"She's still not out of the woods, but her numbers are all steady and they seem to be staying there," Katrina McIntosh said of her daughter Melinda McIntosh's slowly improving condition. "Her heart rate and her blood pressure are up a little bit without any medication. They're turning the ventilator down a little bit."

Katrina added that Melinda is still sedated. Melinda's brother Matt died from affects of the swine flu on July 5.

Re: Indiana/Ohio: Doctors investigating H1N1 death of man and critical illness of his sister

Mindy is making progress - and they FINALLY confirmed her infection as H1N1.

A 26-year-old Dearborn County, Ind., woman whose brother died last week of the swine flu is now a confirmed case of the H1N1 virus, her mother said Wednesday.

Mindy McIntosh remains at University Hospital in critical condition but is showing signs of improvement, said Katrina McIntosh, 45, in a phone interview from the hospital.

McIntosh is able to breathe a bit on her own, so doctors are going to try to wean her off the ventillator. McIntosh, a grocery store clerk, also moved her head and her arm today, also signs of progress, her mother said.

Matt McIntosh, 19, died July 5 at University Hospital of the H1N1 virus after falling ill two weeks ago. His was the second swine flu death in the region. A 40-year-old unidentified man in Butler County died of the virus on June 29.

Matt and Mindy McIntosh, who live at home with their mother in Dillsboro, suffered the same symptoms when they fell ill about two weeks ago. Matt McIntosh became sick first, and then his sister two days later, their mother said.

But it remains a mystery where they contracted the disease, she said.

They have not traveled out of the country or been exposed to anyone else with the virus that they know of, she siad.

"We just don't know," Katrina McIntosh said. "We have no idea where it came from. This is just something that doesn't happen to you. It's just something you see on TV."

Sister of Musician is Confirmed Case of H1N1 Flu

Mindy and Matt McIntosh Officials say the sister of a Dearborn County man who died of swine flu is now also a confirmed case of H1N1. Mindy McIntosh remains in critical condition at University Hospital today.

19-year-old Matt Mcintosh, known as "Skinny" died Sunday, July 5 at University Hospital after first feeling ill two weeks ago.

Mindy, who is 26, has been at University Hospital with the same symptoms... pneumonia and kidney failure. Test results show she has the virus also. Mindy's family tell us she's doing slightly better, but remains on a respirator. She is in isolation in the intensive care unit.

The two siblings lived with their parents in Moores Hills, which is in rural Dearborn County, Indiana.

Matt fell ill on June 28th. He spent two days in a Dearborn County Hospital and was airlifted to University Hospital in Cincinnati on June 30th. Matt was the drummer in the rock band "Strange on Display". His death is the first reported death from H1N1 in Hamilton County.

Re: Indiana/Ohio: Doctors investigating H1N1 death of man and critical illness of his sister

A few of the comments on the above article from family members I believe Rshell is using the words isolate and quarantine interchangably.

Rshell - 6:44 PM 1 Vote Report User To answer the questions...number one, NO Dearborn Co. said they didn't have the tests then..so, my friends we in that hospital getting God only knows what treatment, then they got way worse very fast and had to be aircared to UC hospistal. Then they got tested. Also, no we haven't been quarantined, neither was Skinny (at any time) or the family. They only quarantined Mindy after he died.. I'm very suspicious of this entire thing. Dearborn Co. messed up..and now even UC is saying they "never wronglly diagnosed", and yet they told the family he didn't have swine flu..and told the media they were "95% sure" he didn't. I'm tired of this crap. It took him almost 3 weeks to get test results, and almost 3 1/2 for Mindy. Why??

chatty - 12:40 PM 0 Votes Report User I'm curious as to if Dearborn County Hospital tested them or not and if so, are they the ones who said it was negative? There have been so many bad stories that come out of that hospital. I hope they didn't contribute to his death by letting him lay there for two days, not diagnosed correctly.

For two family members to both get so very, very ill... does not bode well. IMO possible mutations should be looked at.
