In the last sixteen days, at least six children have died of measles in Silapas and Rayalghati tribal villages of Kodipari gram panchayat in Kashipur block. More than fifty children have been affected by this disease in these villages besides Malamba, Bhejapadar, Kendrapada, Tureighati, Chiliguda and Barjakhala

One has to literally walk for nine kilometres from Jogiparitunda village to reach these villages.

CDMO Dr KVS Chaudhury said a paediatric doctor had been sent to the area to ascertain the outbreak of measles. However, according to Dr KK Rout, Joint Director of Health, who recently visited the area, has agreed that the deaths were due to measles but the situation was under control. The affected children are brought to the temporary health camp at Jogiparitunda and to the PHC at Tikiri, Dr Rout said. But there could be seen no such temporary health camp in Jogiparitunda or in any of the affected villages. Dr Mandal has visited Rayalghati only once and after that no doctor, including the Joint Director,
has ever visited the area.

KORAPUT: With the death of a 14-year-old girl on Sunday, the death toll in suspected measles reached 10 in Rayagada district's Kasipur block, unofficial reports said. Official figure, however, puts the toll at four. Significantly, the latest casualty has increased the worries of the state health department as the girl who died on Sunday was being treated for measles for five days.

Officials at the district health department said Champa Jhodia of Silapash village died on Sunday morning. "A medical team was treating the child for measles for the last five days. She collapsed all of a sudden on Sunday morning. The death of the child has forced us to think whether the disease is measles or something else. The child was given all the doses of medicines for measles, but she still succumbed to it," medical officer of Kasipur hospital Saroj Kumar Naik said.

Measles toll rises to four

Bhubaneswar, April 30: Measles has spread to three more villages at Kashipur block of Rayagada district in Odisha. While the number of children affected remains at 84, one more death yesterday has raised the toll to four. Another four deaths have also taken place in Kashipur in the last fortnight, but the symptoms appear to be different.

Though the Odisha health department has said four died from the disease, the four other deaths were caused by a disease with similar symptoms. Unconfirmed sources, however, put the toll at 10.
