Guwahati, August 30: A total of 428 cases of Japanese encephalitis (JE) have been reported across Assam so far. The death toll due to the deadly JE virus has reached 88.

34 JE cases have been reported in Sivasagar till date out of which eight died. Out of 93 JE cases in Dibrugarh,14 have died. 14 JE cases have been reported in Tinsukia and 27 in Jorhat. Kamrup district has recorded 10 deaths.

Comment: No mention is made here of AES cases. To July 31 there were 79 total deaths of which 52 were confirmed JE. JE is confirmed in about two thirds of all fatal cases of acute encephalitis in Assam this year. So in addition to the 88 deaths mentioned in this report there are at least 27 (probably more) AES fatalities bringing the state toll to 115. From the point of view of fatalities 2018 saw 118 fatalities (89 at BRD) from Jan-July vs 114/102 and 93*/96 in 2017 and 2016 respectively.
