In the ward of the BRD Medical College's ward, the death of children is not taking the name of a stoppage. During the 24 hours, 15 children died during treatment in different wards of the department. Among the dead, a child suffering from encephalitis is also involved.

According to college principal Dr. PK Singh, 10 children died in NICU in 24 hours, five children died in Piediatric ICU. During this time 61 new patients were recruited in these wards. Those recruited include Paidiatric ICU 48 and 13 NICU 13 patients. Gulab's son Deepak (13 years), who was suffering from Inseflitis, died. Apart from this, 27 new encephalitis patients have been admitted. Those recruited include eight each in Gorakhpur, five each from Deoria and Bihar, Kushinagar, Maharajganj and Sant Kabbir Nagar and two each from Siddhartha Nagar, Gonda and Nepal. Till this year, 625 patients of INSaphlite have come to the medical college for treatment. Of these, 158 have died while 89 are still undergoing treatment.

Comment: A media report has reported the number of fatalities in Odisha as 60, Uttar Pradesh as 174. Kerala has reported 2 fatalities, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Jharkhand, Gujarat & Maharashtra have all reported 1 fatality each in reports in this thread. In total this amounts to 501 fatalities so far this year. As always, I am dubious about these official figures. Some states like Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Manipur & Karnataka have large numbers of cases, but seem to report few fatalities. - Ro

10 more innocent victims in BRD

Gorakhpur: In the pediatric ward of BRD Medical College, the process of death of innocent people is not taking place. During the last 24 hours, ten more innocent people died during treatment in the Department of Pediatrics. Among the deceased, seven children from NICU and three children of pediatric ICU are included. During this 51 new child patients were recruited for medical treatment. At present, 318 children are being treated in the Pediatric Ward.

Meanwhile, the sequence of deaths from Insefalitis is also in progress. During the last 24 hours, two more children died of Insephalitis Ward during treatment. With this, the number of people who died this year so far has turned 160. Among those who died were the Kishan of Pushnaruna Kushinagar and the Kajal of Rudrapur Deoria. Meanwhile, 20 new patients of INSephalitis were admitted to the medical college during 24 hours. Till this year, 645 patients of INSEFHYTIS have come to the medical college for treatment. 99 patients are still being treated in the Insefalitis Ward of the College.

In 2016, 408 children below 15 were studied. In 199 of 397 samples processed (49.4 per cent), parasite O.tsutsugamushi or Scrub Typhus emerged as a causative agent of infection. Japanese encephalitis and dengue caused by mosquitoe bites were other reasons, and prevailed in 8.3 per cent and 6.9 per cent cases, respectively in 2016. In 2017, of 378 samples tested, 83 (22 per cent) have come positive for parasitic infection. "A clearer picture will emerge after August. The 2017 data is only for six months," said an NIV official in Gorakhpur.

On April 27, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare wrote to UP Health Minister Siddharth Nath Singh that Scrub Typhus is very easy to diagnose in laboratories with a simple enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay or ELISA and a Weil-Felix test, and that the condition is fully treatable if diagnosed early. Till date, no health centre of district hospital has been equipped for Scrub Typhus tests.

"Primary health centres are ill-equipped with Doxicyclin and Azithromycin till date. Diagnostic facilities are unavailable. Both these are of utmost importance to save children's lives," says an Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) official who took stock of the situation in July.

It said the committee has recommended registration of criminal cases against former principal of BRD Medical College, Dr Rajeev Mishra; Dr Satish, in-charge of oxygen supply and head of anesthesia department; Dr Khan, in-charge of the 100-bed AES ward; and M/s Pushpa Sales.
The committee had recommended action under Prevention of Corruption Act against Dr Mishra, his wife Dr Purnima Shukla, and Gajanan Jaiswal, the medical college’s chief pharmacist. Adityanath has ordered disciplinary action against Dr Mishra, Dr Satish, Dr Khan, Gajanan and an accountant for dereliction in duty and behavior against rules laid down for the staff.

LUCKNOW: What is the first measure a parent in Gorakhpur region takes to save a child showing symptoms of encephalitis? It could be sprinkling holy water, massage with oil that has been `blessed', a talisman or sweet offered as prasad to the `kul devi' (family goddess). In Khorabar block of Gorakhpur, the practice of offering a wok with a red band tied on its ears to a deity is treatment recommended for the `nauki bimari' or `dimagi bukhar', the colloquial names for encephalitis.
These methods, prescribed by quacks and faith healers, are adopted by most people, said a health department survey report. Conducted by social organisation Path, the survey found 52% parents take children with encephalitis first to a quack or faith healer. A small number of them tried home remedies like warding off the evil eye. The survey also showed that only 17% of children were taken to a government health facility when symptoms show.

Dr RN Singh was a 28-year-old senior resident in the department of paediatrics at Gorakhpur’s Baba Raghav Das (BRD) Medical College when the hospital got its first case of what was later diagnosed as Japanese Encephalitis.

That was in 1978. Since then, the mosquito-borne viral infection has caused annual outbreaks in the region, killing hundreds of children each year.

“An 8-year-old boy was brought to the emergency early in the morning with a high fever that was about 104 degrees Fahrenheit, convulsions, and incoherent behaviour. He went into a coma six to eight hours later and died the next day. No one knew of what,” recalls Dr Singh. “Soon, the hospital was getting around 50 cases a year.”

The share of stunted children, that is, those who have not attained the height normal for their ages, ranges between 42% in Gorakhpur and 59% in Deoria. More than one third of children are underweight in all four districts. And anemia afflicts almost two thirds of the kids. All this is for children who are up to five years old. These are the markers of endemic poverty in the region and no amount of well-meaning tinkering with task forces and operational inter-ministerial strategies will rein in AES till these are also addressed.

Gorakhpur: Children's deaths are continuing in BRD Medical College. Nine more innocent people died in the past 24 hours in the Department of Pediatrics. According to information given by the college, six deaths occurred in the NICU while three children died in the pediatric ICU. The pleasant thing is that in the last 24 hours, there was no innocent death from Insefalitis. Meanwhile, 51 new patients were admitted in the Department of Pediatrics during this period. 31 children were admitted to Pediatric ICU and 20 children in NICU. Gorakhpur: El and J Cabin of BRD Medical College in 100 Bed Encephalitis Ward has worsened on AC Sunday. Due to this, the patients and their tigers had to face severe problems. Due to the holiday on Sunday, AC repair work could not be done till late at night. Timers said that since the AC shutdown has increased the cabin in the cabin. To get rid of this, they have to be clothed with clothes for their patients. They told that they complained to the doctors and staff, they told that there is a problem in getting AC due to the day of Sunday. It will be fixed on Monday.

31 die of encephalitis in Dibrugarh

Dibrugarh, Aug. 27: The outbreak of encephalitis in Dibrugarh district shows no sign of abating as the death toll from the vector-borne disease touched 31 today.

So far, 10 people have died of Japanese encephalitis while another 21 have succumbed to acute encephalitis syndrome (AES).

The joint director of health services, Udayan Kumar Baruah, told The Telegraph that another 202 encephalitis-affected people are being treated at the Assam Medical College and Hospital. Of them, 42 have tested positive for Japanese encephalitis

From the event of 10/11, BRD Medical College's Encephalitis Ward is not taking the name of the eclipse. Now there is a case of a problem being faced by the short circuit in the ward. Dr. Mahima Mittal, President of the Department of Pediatrics, has notified the problem only by writing a letter to the Principal, but also expressed the possibility of the accident.

In a letter to the Principal, he said that continuous electrical circuit of ward number 100 is happening. Because of this the treatment is being affected many times. If a proper arrangement is not taken in the right time, then a major accident can not be ruled out. The Head of the Department has requested the principal to take the matter seriously, to alert the concerned officers and employees, to avoid the possibility of accident by removing this problem at the earliest and prevent any kind of interference in the treatment of Insefalitis patients. Come in Principal Dr. PK Singh has refused to meet such a letter. In spite of this, they talked about the short circuit of electricity to be vigilant. The principal said that he was not aware of any letter sent by the Head of the departments but the entire vigilance was being taken regarding the issue of electrical maintenance. On any kind of problem, the demand for the deployment of a junior engineer in the college has been written to the chief engineer of the power department to solve the problem. Let's say that due to such negligence, a NICU ventilator was burnt in the past year, which had a lot of aggression.

Acne drug seen to provide cure for Japanese encephalitis in limited trials

Weeks after several children died of encephalitis-related complications at the Baba Raghav Das (BRD) Medical College, Gorakhpur, the Centre is looking to introduce a new drug, traditionally used for acne, to deal with the seasonal outbreaks of acute encephalitis.

Last year the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) said the drug did not appear potent enough to merit being immediately rolled out as a standard treatment for treating patients afflicted with the Japanese encephalitis (JE) virus.

In 2008, researchers at the National Brain Research Centre (NBRC), Manesar found that minocycline ? an antibiotic typically used to treat severe acne ? surprisingly seemed to cure rats infected with the JE virus.

25 children die in 24 hours in BRD

In the last 24 hours in BRD Medical College, 25 children died due to other diseases including infections. A total of 66 patients were recruited during this period. In patients admitted there are 19 patients of encephalitis. Among the dead, four infections of INSaphlitis, recruitment of 10 newborn ICUs and 11 children suffering from other diseases in pediatric ICU.

Among the four children who died from Incephalitis, 12 year old Mamta of Sant Kabirnagar, Six years of Shalway of Ballia, four years of Kushinagar pravin and one year and a half years of Maharajganj Ritesh are included. Since January, 743 patients of INSephalitis have been admitted in BRD Medical College, out of which 179 have been killed. 106 patients are currently undergoing treatment.

According to the medical college administration, in the wards of the childhood, there are usually deaths from infections and other serious diseases from July to September. As far as the newborn is concerned, children in large numbers suffer from undeveloped and severe diseases. The infection is also a major reason for their death. There are two to three tigers with recruitment of newborns, which have a risk of infection.

Poorly informed health workers, who believed the JE vaccination could not be simultaneously administered with the measles and DPT (diphtheria, pertussis and tetanus) vaccinations prescribed in India?s Universal Immunisation Programme, were the main reason for the poor vaccination record. The health workers believed that simultaneously administering multiple vaccinations could overload children?s immune system and increase the risk of side effects, so they asked mothers (or fathers) to return for the JE vaccination. I had never realised it serves so many. Now that I think about it, the actual number of people that seek its services is probably around six crore (60 million), if you also consider the population of the three neighbouring districts of Bihar for whom this hospital is closer than the nearest tertiary care centre in their own state. The hospital is mediocre as a health facility. Speaking with relevance to this incident, I am sure it is not the only government health centre in India where a chalta hai (make do) attitude has worsened the quality of patient care it is capable of and caused a tragedy.

Ranchi: Over 800 children died in two medical hospitals in Jharkhand and the majority of the deaths occurred due to encephalitis.

So far this year, 660 children have died at the Rajendra Institute of Medical Science (RIMS) in Ranchi and 164 deaths have been reported in the last four months from Jamshedpur's Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Hospital.

Sources at RIMS said 51 per cent children died due to encephalitis, 17 per cent due to pneumonia and the rest due to other reasons including malaria, snake bite, breathing problems and being underweight.

Comment: This is an amazing statement in some respects and yet not unexpected in others. Jharkhand generally reports between two and three hundred cases of Acute Encephalitis Syndrome to the NVBDCP annually, but usually reports less than 10 deaths. There are several states on the NVBDCP tally that report disproportionately low mortality - Karnataka, Manipur, Tripura, Tamil Nadu to name some. Over the past few years we have come across several examples where the NVBDCP tally is much lower than media reports. For Odisha in 2016 the NVBDCP reported 1,096 cases with 115 fatalities. This media report https://flutrackers.com/forum/forum/...403#post779403 , quoting the health directorate, put the number of Encephalitis deaths at 337 including 115 AES and 42 JE cases and a third category just called Encephalitis that included another 180 deaths. I'm not a doctor, so I don't know if there is a medical reason why there is a separate category and why it does not get included in the NVBDCP tally. In Arunachal Pradesh in 2015, state numbers gave 874 cases of JE/AES https://flutrackers.com/forum/forum/...381#post749381 , but the NVBDCP reported only 73. Bottom line - There are 336 Encephalitis fatalities from just 1 hospital in Jharkhand that are not included in the annual statistics. It is likely that the NVBDCP case and fatality figures under count the burden of AES and JE in India by thousands. - Ro
