Girl battles Rasmussen?s encephalitis

STAFF REPORTER

A four-year-old girl diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disorder, Rasmussen?s encephalitis, is being treated by neurologists at the Government General Hospital here.

Rasmussen, 92, a neurosurgeon had done extensive research on the disease, and identified the disease as having a poor prognosis. The symptoms of the disease, also known as chronic focal encephalitis, include seizures and paralysis of left upper and lower limb. The patient will continue to have seizures which is termed as epilepsia partialis continua despite using multiple anti-epileptic drugs.

After conducting a series of clinical tests and collaborating with imaging evidence, Head of Department of Neurology N.V. Sundarachary said that though the exact cause was not known, the disorder could be due to sub-acute chronic infection or autoimmune attack on Glutamate 3 receptors in the brain.

Assam's failure to implement Japanese encephalitis warning system leaves health officials fuming

TNN | Jul 22, 2016, 08.46 AM IST

Guwahati: Japanese encephalitis has caused 59 deaths in the state so far. The failure to implement an early warning syste, by the state health department has drawn the ire of the developers of the system. The state health officials considered the system unfeasible and too scientific for actual implementation.
The warning system was developed in Assam by scientists at the Regional Medical research Centre (RMRC) in collaboration with the North East Space Application Research Centre (NESAC). It uses Remote Sensing and Geographic Information System, the previous year's JE data along with meteorological data to predict JE outbreaks.
...
Till Thursday, 240 positive JE cases were reported. Nagaon and Sivasagar districts reported the highest number of cases 33 and 28 respectively.
...
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/...lth-officials-fuming/articleshow/53331179.cms

Ro's comment: On June 30 NVBDCP reported 468 cases (62 fatal) of AES in Assam of which 83 (21 fatal) were confirmed JE. If the number of confirmed cases of JE has tripled in the past 3 weeks to 240 (59 fatal), it can be assumed that the overall number of cases of AES and resulting fatalities will have tripled also.

IMPHAL, Jul 22: Health Director Dr O Ibomcha has categorically stated that people need not be panicky even though some positive cases of Japanese Encephalitis (JE) have been detected. Apart from carrying out vaccination campaigns, fogging has been done in all the areas located within a radius of one to two Kms of the places where JE cases have been confirmed.
...
Dr Ibomcha appealed to all the parents to vaccinate their children in time. Of the nine people infected by JE, one has been taken to Guwahati, while the others are undergoing treatment at JNIMS, RIMS and Mothers? Care Children Hospital, Sagolband.
