A couple of interesting articles from the Jagran;

The first reports a fatal case of Encephalitis in a two year old at Nehru hospital in Gorakhpur. Due to incorrect record keeping, the patient was not assigned a patient number and there was a problem with government compensation. The Chief Medical Superintendent has requested proper paperwork.

Comment: Generally speaking, Japanese Encephalitis is confirmed in only a fraction of cases of Encephalitis in Assam. Articles that report confirmed cases of JE are really only telling part of the story. I'm not sure why the author chose to go back so far for his statistics. From 2010-2015, Assam saw 8,122 cases of Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (2,964 positive for JE) and 1,488 fatalities (687 positive for JE). The number of confirmed cases of JE in the report below represents a significant increase over the number contained in the NVBDCP report of May 31st (see post 34 above). The JE transmission season in Assam has begun in earnest. - Ro

Assam hit by acute JE vaccine crunch

Saurav Bora

Guwahati, June 13: Assam has been hit by an acute shortage of vaccines that offer protection against Japanese encephalitis, a disease which has no comprehensive treatment and can kill or permanently disable victims.

Drug distributors catering to the Northeast here say despite placing orders, they have not received the Japanese encephalitis vaccines for the past two months, triggering a precarious situation.

"We have not received the vaccines for two months now. We cater to hospitals and pharmacies across the region with demand higher in places such as Pasighat in Arunachal Pradesh, Tura in Garo hills and Upper Assam where the transmission of the disease is higher," a source associated with one of the four major drug distributors here told The Telegraph.
...
Of late, the virus has spread to central and lower Assam though the number of cases are much lower. The dose should preferably be administered during the non-transmission season such as in winter, instead of the transmission season (June-July)," Bhagawati said.

Sources in the health department said they have activated the modes of controlling such vector-borne diseases. "We carry out fogging and various awareness programmes against the disease," he said.

Residents, however, allege they have not seen fogging activities of late. "The city has its share of clogged drains and the season is not favourable. We are worried about the shortage of the Japanese encephalitis vaccine as well," D. Misra, a resident of Fatasil Ambari said.

AFTER DENGUE, JAPANESE ENCEPHALITIS STINGS
By Vandana Kamath, Bangalore Mirror Bureau | Jun 18, 2016, 04.00 AM IST
After dengue, Japanese Encephalitis stings

After dengue and malaria, the first fatal case of suspected Japanese Encephalitis (JE) has been reported in Sidlaghatta in Chikkaballapur district. A five-year-old girl was diagnosed with Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) and was brought to Vani Vilas Hospital, where she died on June 6. Rabiya had high fever and convulsions on May 26 and was admitted to a district hospital on June 3. She was then shifted to Vani Vilas where she succumbed to her illness. JE is a serious mosquito-borne viral infection resulting in the inflammation of the brain.

Health department officials claim to have already started a fever survey in the area. If confirmed, this will be the second case of JE this year in the state, and the first fatal one. Last year, the state saw 50 cases of JE but no deaths. JE is considered to be one of the main causes of AES.

As far as AES is concerned, the state has seen 193 cases in the first six months of 2016 as compared to 150 in the whole of last year. Dr Prakash Kumar, state surveillance officer, Department of Health and Family Welfare, told BM, "The first case of confirmed JE was seen two months ago in North Karnataka. In the case of this girl, we have sent the reports to the laboratory and it is yet to be confirmed. It is mainly tested through an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay [ELISA]."
...
http://www.bangaloremirror.com/bang...-Encephalitis-stings/articleshow/52802633.cms

Comment: Many of the figures reported in this article are at odds with the official NVBDCP tally for 2015. According to the NVBDCP, in 2015 Karnataka reported 335 cases of AES of which 27 were positive for JE. Officially, there was only one fatality which was also positive for JE. Given that the cfr in AES cases is generally 10-25% across most of India, it is likely that the official fatality toll in Karnataka is lower than reality. Also worth noting that the state has not officially notified NVBDCP of any cases yet this year in spite of what seems to be a large number reported. - Ro
