Blood Samples Of Pigs In Koraput Test Positive For Japanese Encephalitis Virus
Eight samples tested positive for the japanese encephalitis virus.
KORAPUT, ODISHA: After tribal-dominated Malkangiri district where Japanese Encephalitis outbreak has claimed 63 lives, the virus has now been found in pigs of neighbouring Koraput district in Odisha.

Of the 28 blood samples sent to the Indian Veterinary Research Institute at Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh, eight samples tested positive for the JE virus, according to the report received by the Koraput district administration yesterday.

Among the four people killed in Kushinagar Bhushan thirteen years, four years, five years of moonlight and Bhaskar are five years of Anushka and Bihar. Six of those admitted in Gorakhpur, Kushinagar, eight, three of Maharajganj, Deoria and Bihar Sntkbirnagr two and one patient. So far this year from January 1558, of which 396 patients have been admitted to BRD Medical College have been killed.

Malkangiri: The toll due to Japanese Encephalitis went up to 72 with two more deaths at the district headquarters hospital here on Friday.

The deceased have been identified as Chandan Kabasi (5) of Badali village in Korokonda block and Sariam Ramu of Jilenguda.

With the fresh deaths, the toll mounts to 72 in 50 days.

Meanwhile, another 3-year-old baby boy, undergoing treatment at the ICU of the Koraput hospital, died this morning.

Comment: This is an interesting article because, in spite of the title, it is reporting 3, not 2, deaths. The two deaths from Malkangiri are being included in the total of 72. The death from Koraput, which is the 8th from that district is not included. Does this imply that the overall toll in the state is 80 or more? Maybe. The article below reports the same deaths, but gives the toll as 74. - Ro

Death of children due to Japanese Encephalitis (JE) continues unabated in Odisha?s Malkangiri as two more kids succumbed to the vector-borne disese at the District Headquarters Hospital here today.

The deceased were identified as Sariaram Ramu (5) of Jilenguda village under Padia block and Chandan Kabasi (5) of Badli village under Korkonda block in the district. Both died while undergoing treatment at the hospital, sources said.

With this, the death toll in the disease reached 74 in Malkangiri.

Meanwhile, a 3-year-old baby boy undergoing treatment in the ICU of Koraput District Headquarters Hospital died due to suspected Japanese Encephalitis. The deceased was identified as Akash Khemundu of Khairiput in Malkangiri.

KORAPUT: There seems to be no respite from Japanese Encephalitis (JE) for people of Koraput district. Four more children suffering from JE, were admitted to the District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) on Thursday. All of them belong to Boipariguda.

They are Hemant Durua of Gupteswar, Prasanta Khila of Padapadar village and two school children from Balipadar Sevashram of Boipariguda - Purni Kirsani and Moti Sisa. Additional District Medical Officer (Medical), PK Panda said blood samples of the children have tested positive for JE.

An emergency meeting was organised on Thursday by district level health and veterinary officials in which Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO), L Kabi claimed that the JE virus seemed to have been carried to Koraput by birds that migrated here from Kondagaon near Kotpad in Chitrakonda block of Malkangiri. So far, 24 children have been diagnosed with brain fever and of them, four were tested positive for JE. Of these 24 children, 19 are from Koraput, four from Malkangiri and one from Nabarangpur.

Medical College, and within 24 hours, four patients died suffering from encephalitis. Since January, 400 patients have died from the disease. Also, 13 new patients were admitted.

Encephalitis Medical College is the growing number of patients. All efforts are being made to prevent it are proving insufficient. Currently, 88 patients are admitted in a medical college. Complete treatment from health centers is provided by the Medical College. Despite this, patients are not going to health centers. Patients are directly turned to the district hospital. The number of patients is increasing Issee Medical College.

In the last 24 hours of Gorakhpur Semara Soumya (3), Pipraich doll (4), Deoria, bariarpur yearn (5), Deoria Rishu (4) were killed. While one of Gorakhpur, Kushinagar, four, two of Deoria, Sntkbirnagr one, five patients have been admitted to Siddharth. Since January 1571 at the Medical College of encephalitis patients have come for treatment.

The deceased have been identified as Susila Padiami (2) of Daniguda block and Laxmi Madkami (4) of Gamphakonda village under Kalimela block.

According to sources, elder brother of Susila, who succumbed due to the vector-borne disease, is also undergoing treatment at the district headquarters hospital. His condition is stated to be critical.

Two more kids on Saturday succumbed to Japanese encephalitis in Malkangiri district taking the toll to 78 in the district within the past one and half months.
The deceased were identified as one-year-old girl Mamata Sodhi of Dhangadabhatta village under Korukonda block and another one Bhima Madi of Gouriguda village under Kalimila block.
Mamata Sodhi died at the Malkangiri district headquarter hospital while Bheema succumbed in Kalimila block headquarter hospital, Kalimela. Seventeen more kids have been admitted in the district headquarter hospital, Malkangiri on Saturday. While two were taken to the ICU, others are undergoing treatment in the JE (Japanese Encephalitis) ward of the hospital.

Malkangiri: The death toll due to Japanese Encephalitis (JE) reached 82 with three more deaths reported in the district today even as the government admitted the situation has remained grim for last three-four days.

Ramesh Padiami of Daniguda succumbed to the killer disease while undergoing treatment at the district headquarters hospital in the morning while Ramesh Pujari of Katapali under Mathili block and Rasi Madhi of Dangasakhal under Korakanda block died of the vector borne disease two hours after. Sister of Ramesh Padiami also died of the vector borne disease two days ago in the hospital.

All of them succumbed to the disease while undergoing treatment at Malkangiri District Headquarters Hospital.

Notably, Ramesh’s sister Sushila had died of the disese two days ago.

MALKANGIRI : Of the 69 deaths reported so far in the district, 24 died due to Japanese Encephalitis (JE), claimed Collector K Sudarshan Chakravarthy on Monday.

Speaking to this paper on the latest JE situation in Malkangiri, he said 246 children were admitted to the DHH while blood samples of 289 were sent for test of which 91 were found JE positive.

RAIPUR: A two-year-old kid died due to Japanese encephalitis in tribal Sukma region on Monday. The district administration officials said that despite repeated instructions, residents of the village are not keeping the livestock away from their home.

Sukma chief medical officer Dr Virendra Thakur said that the two-year-old boy Somnath Yadav from village Jhirampal died of Japanese encephalitis during treatment at Malkangiri hospital. Somnath was admitted to hospital on October 28 and died after three days of hospitalisation on Monday.
The eight-year-old sister of the deceased was also affected by the symptoms of fever for which she is admitted to the hospital. Hence, in span of one month, JE has claimed the lives of two children in the district.

BHUBANESWAR: Struggling to find an answer to the Japanese encephalitis (JE) outbreak in Malkangiri district, government health officials involved in the fight seems to be confounded by the presence of an as yet unknown virus which they feel could be responsible for killing more children than the former. On Tuesday three more children died in Malkangiri, taking the toll to 80.

"Had JE been the main cause behind the deaths, the situation would have come under control by now. Our worry is other viruses which need to be identified and their pattern of transmission figured out. It's very difficult to have a strategy when you don't know the virus," said Madan Pradhan, nodal officer for national vector-borne diseases control programme in the state.
To buttress his claim Pradhan said only in the case of 26 children who died has JE been confirmed. But in the case of 45 others, the virus has not been identified. Pradhan said more assessment needs to be done to find out the killer disease. He also claimed that the situation in Malkangiri has striking similarity with the outbreak at Muzaffarpur in Bihar in 2011-12 when several children had died. "We are studying research articles on the Muzaffarpur deaths," Pradhan said.

Comment: One of the features of the Muzaffarpur outbreak was that none of the children was testing positive for JE. In this outbreak over 30% of cases are testing JE positive. JE testing involves detection of IgM antibodies in serum or cerebrospinal fluid. These may take up to 10 days post infection to become detectable. It is possible to get a negative result in an individual who is infected with JE. I suspect that many of the unconfirmed cases in this outbreak are also likely JE. - Ro

Ro' Comments: We have reports in this thread of 84 confirmed encephalitis deaths in Odisha to November 2nd. Two fatalities were reported in Karnataka to July 10. Delhi reported a death on July 22. Manipur reported 4 deaths to August 10. Madhya Pradesh reported 37 cases with 14 fatalities to August 11.Telangana reported a fatality on Aug 14. Uttar Pradesh reported 415 deaths at BRD, Gorakhpur to Nov 2nd (now 420) implying that at least 48 deaths occurred at other facilities. Maharashtra reported 3 cases of AES, 1 fatal in the Week 28 IDSP report. Chhattisgarh has reported 14 deaths to Nov 1st.

Putting all of this together, confirmed fatalities now total to 1,073 an increase of 200 since Oct 2nd.

Expert team to visit Malkangiri for thorough study on Encephalitis virus

Bhubaneswar: The expert team formed by the State Government will visit Malkangiri district to undertake an in-depth study on the Japanese Encephalitis disease which has so far claimed lives of 87 children.

Jacob John, a renowned clinical virologist, was appointed the chairperson of the six-member team. The team, at its first meeting here with Principal Secretary, Health and Family Welfare Arti Ahuja on Thursday, discussed the JE situation in the tribal dominated district at the here.

According to the Health and Family Welfare Department, at least 248 children have been affected of whom, 129 are girls. There have been 75 deaths so far and children in the 5-10 age group are affected, said Health department officials.

Malkangiri: Sonu Padiami, a bereft father of Daniguda village under Tindirimal Gram Panchayat of tribal-dominated Malkangiri block is all in tears when his third child, detected with JE virus, was taken by the Collector to the Malkangiri DHH for treatment, much against his wishes.

"I have already lost two children in that hospital. I did not want to take my third child there, but the Collector came and took her there for treatment. I was ready to take her to any other hospital, be it Berhampur or Cuttack, but not Malkangiri DHH. It will again kill my child. I can't take the load of this death anymore," cried out Sonu Padiami.

Sonu, is one among many such parents who have been deprived of their children following their premature deaths due to the deadly disease of Japanese Encephalitis (JE) that has been taking a massive toll on the poor and innocent children of this tribal-dominated district.
