The encephalitis outbreak in northern West Bengal has claimed one more life, taking the death toll in the entire state this year to 212, an official said Wednesday.

According to B.R. Satpathi, director of state health services, 693 acute encephalitis syndrome (AES) cases were reported this year in the state.

Guwahati, Aug. 19: Entomologists of the state health department have found the presence of different vectors of Japanese encephalitis in affected districts of the state. But since most of these vectors breed in paddy fields, it is difficult to conduct fogging or spray insecticide as it may contaminate the crops.

Earlier, Japanese encephalitis was mostly confined to the Upper Assam districts. But this year, cases of Japanese encephalitis and acute encephalitis syndrome have been detected in 28 districts of the state. However, the rate of infection varies in different districts. Till yesterday, the total number of positive Japanese encephalitis and acute encephalitis syndrome cases had reached 699 and 1,851 respectively in the state. While Japanese encephalitis has claimed 146 lives, the death toll in acute encephalitis syndrome is 317.

Shillong: A person diagnosed with Japanese encephalitis (JE), who was admitted to a private hospital in the city recently, is recovering fast.

According to hospital sources the patient, the 25-year-old youth from West Khasi Hills, was admitted to hospital with high fever and other symptoms, peculiar to Japanese encephalitis. "After it was confirmed that he was suffering from JE, the doctors of the hospital immediately started treating him. His condition is stable now," a hospital source said.

"The patient is doing fine and he will be discharged within a day or two," the source added. So far, eight confirmed cases of JE have been reported in Meghalaya.
