old male child. All cases treated symptomatically. Out of 33 CSF
samples tested at DPL, Golaghat and Microbiology Department AMCH,
Dibrugarh 2 were found positive for JE and 04 were found equivocal for
JE. Fogging and anti larval control measure undertaken. Heath education

The deceased, Kancha Dong (M, 33) and Buden Lohar (F, 55) were admitted to Kalchini Block PHC with high fever a few days back. They both passed away on Monday. Although the PHC has sent their blood samples to be tested for the presence of the encephalitis virus, the report is yet to be received. Kolkata: Encephalitis is ?under control? in West Bengal, an official said Thursday, dismissing reports about the disease surfacing in Kolkata.

The total number of people who died due to acute encephalitis syndrome (AES) in the state stood at 119 till July 31, according to the director of health services.

In the northern part of West Bengal as many as 79 have died in July this year.

A two-and-a-half year-old boy has died of Encephalitis symptoms in Kolkata, sending health officials into a tizzy and raising alarm that the dreaded Japanese Encephalitis (JE) may finally have sneaked into the city after taking several lives in north Bengal. The government, however, denied that it was a case of JE and maintained that the child died due to an ?unknown? fever.
Doctors at Calcutta National Medical College said that Prantik Roy, a resident of Bansdroni, passed away on Saturday morning after being admitted to the hospital a day before. His father is also suffering from suspected encephalitis and has been admitted to SSKM. The blood samples of the child's father have been sent for examination and the report is being awaited before any conclusion can be drawn, said an official of the hospital.
"The child has died of encephalitis but it?s not the Japanese Encephalitis that has claimed several lives in north Bengal. A detailed report has been sent to Swasthya Bhavan," said Professor Preet Baran Chakrovorthy, the medical superintendent of Calcutta National Medical College.

GUWAHATI: As the state government considers a proposal to acquire sufficient amount of the attenuated SA 14-14-2 Chinese-made Japanese Encephalitis vaccine, Assam continues to reel from the epidemic, with a total of 497 Japanese Encephalitis cases and 1,322 Acute Encephalitis Syndrome cases being reported as on Wednesday.

"The patient, Narayan Sarkar, passed away early today morning. He had tested positive for the JE virus, had a multi-organ failure and was taken to the Calcutta Medical College where he was put on ventilator last night. 19 dead in Dibrugarh

DIBRUGARH: The encephalitis death toll in Dibrugarh district has touched 19, with five people dying of the vector-borne disease in the past 24 hours. Confirming the deaths, the joint director of health services (Dibrugarh) A K Hazarika on Thursday said 84 persons are undergoing treatment at Assam Medical College and Hospital.

"In Dibrugarh, 19 people have died so far. Among them, 9 have died of Japanese Encephalitis (JE) and 10 of Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES). Another 84 patients are being treated, of which 31 are JE cases and 53 AES cases," he said.

Tarun Gogoi for steping up measures to tackle encephalitis

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today directed the health authorities to step up preventive measures to check the spread of Japanese Encephalitis (JE) and Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) that have claimed 336 lives so far this year.

Gogoi also instructed the health authorities to spray bleaching powder, conduct fogging at the piggeries and hold awareness campaigns across the state, said the Chief Minister Office (CMO).

Taking stock of the quantity of medicines available in the hospitals and health centres, Gogoi instructed the health authorities to procure medicines to ensure there were no shortages.

Kokrajhar, 1st August (northeastnews): Japanese encephalitis assumes alarming proportion in Kokrajhar with five persons having died so far during the last four months while three patients are being treated in different places or hospitals of the district.
Talking to reporters Dr Amol Mushahary Health Officer for Malaria said that five people, including a minor died and several other affected of Japanese encephalitis in last four months of this year.

He also informed that while the department has provided vaccine in Upper Assam districts, but they are not sure when the state health department will provide vaccine in the Lower Assam districts in the state.

Meanwhile, Dr Abisek Agarwal of New Life pharmacy said that more than hundred people were taken vaccines to avoid JE diseases. He said that there is no free vaccine being provided by the Govt Hospital in the Lower Assam districts and people wanted to take vaccines to avoid JE.

The paediatric ICUs set up by the government in nine districts of the state for treating child victims of a killer viral disease have failed to serve the purpose, a health official said.

Ideally, the patients should have been undergoing treatment at nine 10-bed ICUs the government had decided to set up in the worst-hit nine districts after realising facilities at government hospitals were insufficient to deal with AES and Japanese Encephalitis.

However, while Rs. 20 crore has been spent on the construction of the ICUs and procurement of instruments, the government had not appointed doctors, paramedical staff and technicians to operate them.

The health department official, who wished anonymity, said that lives of many children could have been saved had the ICUs been working.

With 135 people succumbing to Japanese Encephalitis (JE) in West Bengal, experts have termed it “one of the worst outbreaks” of the killer disease in the state in the last two decades. Virology experts said at least 70 per cent of the total number of cases reported with acute encephalitis syndrome (AES) have been tested positive for JE. The state government, however, is still struggling to supply adequate number of JE testing kits to several government hospitals in North Bengal and to the JE testing centres.
Professor Dr Nemai Bhattacharya, unit in charge of the virology department at the Calcutta School of Tropical medicine (STM) said that the situation in North Bengal is “alarming” and “it is the case of biggest outbreak of JE and not Acute Encephalitis Syndrome”.

He further added that the report submitted by the testing centres in NBMCH stated that 25 per cent of the total samples were tested positive for JE, however, the JE testing centre of the virology department in STM has detected at least 70 per cent of the total samples as JE positive. ? “We visited North Bengal twice and collected samples of blood and CSF. At least 60 per cent of the total CSF samples tested positive for JE while at least 75 per cent of the total blood samples tested positive for JE,” said Bhattcharya.

“No fresh deaths nor any new cases of encephalitis were reported in the state in the last 24 hours and the situation was gradually coming under control,” West Bengal Health Services Director Biswaranjan Satpathy said. He put the death toll caused by encephalitis and JE at 126 in the state, even though North Bengal Development Minister Gautam Deb had Thursday put the toll at 135.

Japanese Encephalitis vaccination not effective during transmission: Experts

GUWAHATI: The ministry of health and family welfare and health experts have advised the state government against application of Japanese Encephalitis (JE) vaccines during the transmission phase of the disease as the exercise will not be effective.

More than 100 people in the state have died of JE and acute encephalitis syndrome (AES) so far (actual death toll 336 to Aug 1 - Ro). According to state health officials, over 24 districts have been affected by JE. The disease has severely affected Barpeta, Nagaon, Baksa, Darrang, Sonitpur, Nalbari and Bongaigaon where such cases were not many in the previous years.

The Jalpaiguri district health authorities are uncertain about the cause of death of a one-and-a-half-year-old child, who was suffering from high fever and acute diarrhoea.
The child had been examined at the out-patient department (OPD) yesterday and was admitted to the Jalpaiguri district early today, where he died.
Top health officials were not sure about the cause of the death and are divided over whether it was a case of acute encephalitis syndrome (AES) or acute gastro-enteritis (AGE).
Following the death of several people in Jalpaiguri owing to AES, a group of doctors suspected that the child may have died of the same disease. Another group of doctors, who attended to the child at the OPD and in the hospital today claimed he died of AGE.

Kolkata: The toll due to "different types of Encephalitis" in north Bengal rose to 119 on Saturday and no new cases were reported in the last 24 hours in the state while BJP alleged that the Mamata Banerjee government rejected central help.


"One fresh death was reported from Coochbehar district in north Bengal and no new cases were reported from anywhere in the state," West Bengal Health Services Director Biswaranjan Satpathy told.

Taking into account the death of 20 persons from other states in north Bengal due to Encephalitis, the toll was 139 since January this year, Satpathy said.

Questions raised over authenticity of private labs’ encephalitis tests

Though many private pathological labs in Siliguri are conducting tests for Japanese Encephalitis (JE), apart from the North Bengal Medical College and Hospital (NBMCH), questions are being raised as to whether the tests are authentic and if they meet the quality standards. While the National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune, supplies the test kits across the country, including the NBMCH, an official of a private lab said they import the kits from Korea.
“We conduct the tests here with help from the kits we get from Korea,” the official said.
A private lab may take anything between Rs 1,200 and Rs 2,500 for the tests, and following the outbreak of the acute encephalitis syndrome and the JE and the ensuing deaths, many people are now flocking to these labs to have tests done.

GUWAHATI, Aug 2 – Japanese encephalitis has assumed an alarming proportion in Assam as the death toll has already crossed the century mark. The most disturbing fact is that this time, the disease broke out in Lower Assam areas, which were never known to be prone to Japanese encephalitis.
Health Department sources told The Assam Tribune that so far 535 persons have been affected by Japanese encephalitis and 108 of them have lost their lives. Barpeta is the worst affected district as 65 persons have been afflicted by the disease in the district, while as far as the death toll is concerned, Darrang is the worst affected district with 12 casualties.

'Chandipura virus' claims one more life

VADODARA: Yet another patient suspected to be suffering from Chandipura virus died at Sir Sayajirao General Hospital (SSGH) on Monday night. Nirmala Rathwa (16) from Bara village of Devgadh Baria in Dahod district was admitted to SSGH on July 20.

Nirmala died on Monday night due to renal failure and internal bleeding. She was suffering from a severe condition of viral encephalitis that triggered convulsions. Nirmala was in the ICU from the time when she was admitted.

The results for Nirmala's blood test are still awaited from National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune. While blood samples of three other children from the same village, who died of suspected Chandipura virus, on July 20 tested negative for the virus.

According to the reports sent by NIV on Monday for seven of the 16 samples sent to it, three had tested positive for Chandipura virus and four samples tested negative.

VADODARA: Two more children died of suspected Chandipura viral infection in Panchmahal district on Tuesday even as another girl was admitted to SSG Hospital here in a serious condition. Till now, blood samples of three patients have already confirmed that they were suffering from the deadly virus while the results of three others are awaited.

The suspected outbreak in central Gujarat has claimed 10 lives so far.
