According to the West Bengal Health Department, so far 331 persons have been infected by acute encephalitis syndrome and Japanese encephalitis. Of the 113 deaths, 24 are cases of Japanese encephalitis and remaining acute encephalitis syndrome.

Encephalitis: Centre to send team to south Bengal districts

With encephalitis deaths being reported from South Bengal districts as well, the Union Health Ministry has decided to send a team to districts like Purulia, Bankura and Murshidabad to assess the current situation.
Senior officials of the Union Health Ministry added that the team will reach Kolkata in the next couple of days. The team will visit the affected districts and will prepare a subsequent report.

It may be noted that the Centre has already sent a team from Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital to visit North Bengal where around 124 patients have died at North Bengal Medical College and Hospital due to encephalitis.

Malda hospital lacks JE test kits
Two patients told to go to private clinics or Calcutta

Malda, July 28: The Malda Medical College and Hospital doesn’t have a single Japanese Encephalitis test kit because of which patients have been either been told to go to Calcutta or private clinics.
Sources said the JE test kits available with the medical college had expired around 45 days back and since then, two patients with symptoms of the disease had been admitted.
The two were admitted on July 26 but were told to get their tests done elsewhere. According to medical college officials, 100 test kits had been purchased in 2013 but by the time the first deaths were reported in north Bengal, the kits were past their expiry date.

Krishnendu Narayan Choudhury, the state horticulture minister and chairman of the patient welfare committee at the medical college, also confirmed the shortage of test kits.
“
In the current year, not a single person has died in Malda district because of encephalitis.** Even then, we are not taking any chance and bringing in fresh test kits. The existing kits passed the expiry date and doctors had no other way but to send the patients to Calcutta,” he said.

Acute Encephalitis Syndrome 73 cases 35 deaths. Outbreak start: 05/06/14 Under control
Cases of fever associated with diarrhea, vomiting and convulsions
reported from English bazaar, GP Kaliachak-1, II, III, District Malda.
District & State RRT investigated the outbreak. Active search for
cases done. Cases treated symptomatically. Majority of cases were
malnourished and dehydrated children between age group of 2-5
years. Entire village is surrounded by litchi garden. Stool and throat
swabs were taken from 8 cases by School of Tropical Medicine. 4
CSF, 2 rectal swabs collected and sent to STM, Kolkata. ELISA test
for Dengue, Chikungunya and JE was non reactive.10 serum
samples sent to NIV, Pune for testing of West Nile Virus,
Chandipura virus and Japanese Encephalitis tested negative. Litchi
samples were collected for chemical analysis. Pesticide Alpha
Cyphermethrin was found above Minimum Safe Limit in Litchi
samples. Health education done regarding hydration of children.
Last case was reported on 19th June 2014.

Japanese Encephalitis (JE) outbreak is taking a serious turn with deaths reaching 88 on Monday. Till Sunday, about 80 JE deaths were reported from various parts of the state.

According to health department records, a total of
473 persons were confirmed inflicted with JE across the state on Monday.

At the state-level, the picture continues to be grim, with a total of
207 AES deaths being reported, while 1,257 AES positive cases have been detected so far, according to health department officials. Kamrup (rural), Nalbari, Sonitpur and Darrang districts also remained affected by JE, recording six, seven, six and seven deaths respectively on Monday.
