Mamata confirms 23 dengue deaths in West Bengal

Confirming that 23 people have died of dengue in West Bengal this year, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday said the malarial outbreaks of the 1990s have changed to dengue epidemic now, as the nature of the virus has changed.

Addressing an administrative meeting here, Banerjee said deaths due to high fever is nothing new in the state as malignant malaria used to take heavy toll every year in the 1990s and early 2000s in the state.


"So far 23 people have died of dengue.... As the nature of the virus has changed, we are having outbreaks of dengue in the past few years instead of malaria," the chief minister said.

With yet another death being reported in Hooghly district, the dengue outbreak is spreading across the south Bengal districts. Sonu Choudhury (20), a resident of Telinipara in the Bhadreswar area of Hooghly district died of dengue today at Chandannagar Hospital.

He was admitted to the Chandannagar hospital on 16 November with high fever and pain on joints. Sunidhi Sharma, aged five, hailing from Serampore in the district, died of the mosquito borne fever at Medical College Hospital (MCH) in Kolkata on Tuesday.

The two deaths within a span of only couple of days have created panic among residents

37-year-old man dies of dengue in Kolkata, toll at 28

Kolkata, Dec 9 (PTI) A 37-year-old man died of dengue at a private hospital in Kolkata, taking the toll due to the vector-borne disease in the state since January to 28, officials said on Monday.

Surajit Samanta, a resident of Kanyanagar in South 24 Parganas district died on Sunday night because of dengue encephalitis, a senior official of the state health department said.

Samanta was suffering from high fever for quite some time and was taken to the hospital on EM Bypass on Thursday, a relative said.

Dengue deaths have become a sore throat for the CMO. Door-to-door teams are getting the details of the deaths. Two teams are in government and private hospitals, registers are being checked there. On Monday, people told the team of Malaria Department that went to Barra-2 and told them the problems. However, intensive fogging has been reintroduced for the current cases of dengue and malaria. Five more people have died of the disease, so far 207 deaths have occurred due to dengue.


Following instructions from the government, records of dengue deaths are being collected and officials are arriving at names and addresses. Some people from the team spraying anti-larvae in Barra-2 complained that it is difficult to live with mosquitoes. Meanwhile, in Kalyanpur, the team which went for spraying anti-larvae was surrounded by people and taking them to their locality. Muhibul Hassan resident Juhi, who died on Sunday, died in a private hospital in Govindnagar. Shyamnagar resident of Narang Kumar died in Naubasta. Ram Kripal resident Naubasta died Sunday night in a private hospital there. Kasturi lives in a nursing home in Kalyanpur, a resident of the housing development.

Ganga Prasad resident Nawabganj died in a hospital in Kakadev. Shalu Saini, wife of Anand Saini, a resident of Sahibnagar in Kalyanpur, was suffering from fever for several days. CHENNAI: Despite the number of cases reported in the media, data of the Union Health Ministry says that only five people have died due to dengue in Tamil Nadu from January to November this year. According to the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme data, 6,577 people were, in total, affected with dengue in the State during the time period.

The data updated on Monday also showed neighbouring Karnataka having reported 15,232 cases and 13 dengue deaths, the highest number of cases in the country. The other neighbouring states also reported more cases. Andhra Pradesh reported 4,647 cases and zero deaths. Kerala reported 3,940 cases and 16 deaths, and Telangana reported 12,072 cases and 6 deaths.

On 23 November, Rajendra Singh has been admitted at ESI Hospital in Asansol with high fever.

As his condition worsened he was shifted to a private super speciality hospital in Durgapur on 2 December. His platelet count came down to less than 80,000. Mr. Dipak Singh, his son, claimed that his father would have survived if the disease has been diagnosed on proper time.

Rajkot: Santosh Kuchilal of Mirzapur in Uttar Pradesh, who lives in the Shyam Industrial Area near Kothariya Solvent, died of a fever (e.g. 28).
