665 dengue cases so far this year

?2,386 cases recorded in the corresponding period last year?

Although hospitals across the State have seen a peak in dengue cases since June first week, a comparison of official figures to previous years indicates that the disease has not reached epidemic proportions.

While 665 positive cases have been recorded from January to July 9 this year, the figure was much higher ? 2,386 (including 79 from Bangalore) ? in the corresponding period last year.

A total of 6,408 confirmed cases of dengue, including 1,047 from Bangalore, were reported in 2013. During the same period in 2012, 3,175 positive cases, including 868 from Bangalore, had been reported, according to figures provided by the Health Department.

No dengue deaths have been recorded this year, officials claimed. Twelve deaths were reported in 2013 and 21 in 2012.

BHOPAL: There has been a sudden spurt in dengue cases in the state capital with six more cases reported by the district malaria office (DMO) on Saturday. With the onset of monsoon, 22 people have been diagnosed positive for dengue in the city. Also, Bhopal reported its first dengue death this week.

Comment - The state epidemiological year runs April 1st to March 30th. A mortality rate of 1 in 67 suggests 108 fatal cases during this time. NVBDCP figures are tallied for calendar year and reported 5,432 cases with 48 fatalities for 2013 and 132 cases, 0 fatal to April 30 2014. The national figures seem to underestimate state reported fatalities by around 50%. It is also worth noting that neither state or national figures seem to include any cases treated in private hospitals. - Ro

Residents of Dhankawdi, Ghole Road and Kothrud need to step up their mosquito surveillance as the area-wise distribution of dengue cases revealed that the highest number of cases is being reported from these areas.
The Pune Municipal Corporation?s (PMC) insect control department analysed the data of total 249 dengue cases reported in June. Of them, 200 dengue infected patients were local residents and 49 patients had come to the city from adjoining areas for treatment.

Another dengue death in Bhopal

BHOPAL: Another person succumbed to deadly dengue in Bhopal here on Wednesday, taking the toll to two this month with over 31 others detected positive for the disease in Bhopal.

Health officials said, the dead, 75-year-old man, was undergoing treatment at a private hospital. He was a native of Khandwa and was brought here for treatment. Chief medical and health officer (CMHO) Dr Pankaj Shukla reiterated that situation is under control in the state capital. "For over three weeks now, we have intensified efforts to curb spread of dengue and signs are positive," he said.

Hyderabad health officials deny death due to dengue fever

Hyderabad: The district medical and health officer has denied that the recent death of a patient in LB Nagar area was due to dengue fever. The authorities claimed that death was due to bleeding and not dengue.

The test conducted to confirm dengue by the private hospital was not re-confirmed by the Indian Institute of Preventive Medicine and hence its veracity is doubtful, claim health officers.

Pune: 16 dengue cases reported daily in July

PUNE: Pune city has reported 16 dengue cases every day during July. On Thursday, 38 fresh cases of dengue surfaced ? the highest recorded in a single day this year. So far 280 cases were reported this month, of which 118 were reported last week.

The number of cases has gone up considerably since last month, which recorded 249 cases. The dengue virus has claimed two lives so far this year.

?The 59-year-old woman, Sarita Palande, was diagnosed with dengue haemorrhage fever. The volume of blood inside the body started falling, as she was bleeding internally,? said Dr Jitendra Pawar at Life Care Hospital.

Dengue infections drop, but two deaths worry officials

NASHIK: There have been two deaths due to dengue so far this year, as against one death last year during the same period. Concerned, the district malaria office is now carrying out measures to contain the spread.

The number of positive cases reported in the district has, however, dropped from 91 last year in the January to July period to 54 this year. "We have appealed to private as well as government health officials to be more alert to dengue symptoms," said Dr Prakash Kakade, district malaria officer (DMO).

Girl dies of ?dengue?

A five-year-old girl died of suspected dengue at Gundala Colony near Bhadrachalam on Friday triggering fears of outbreak of dengue in the village.

The deceased has been identified as Priyamani, 5. According to sources, a middle-aged person of the same village died of high fever a couple of days ago. Around ten more villagers are down with fevers.

Suspecting the outbreak of dengue, a section of the villagers staged a demonstration in the village on Friday afternoon demanding provision of effective treatment to the ailing persons of the village.

Bajajnagar youth suspected of having dengue dies

AURANGABAD: A 26-year-old man from Bajajnagar died of suspected dengue here on Saturday, taking the toll to two this month.

The zilla parishad's district malaria officer N Kukarni said, "The patient, Vithal Magre, was undergoing treatment at a private hospital at Bajajnagar for a week after he had suffered from viral infection. However, his condition had deteriorated and he was shifted to another private hospital, where he succumbed to the disease on Saturday."

"Though dengue is a notifiable disease, private doctors fail to notify the disease which hampers the government's efforts," Kulkarni added.

Top city hospitals see a rush of patients; two complicated deaths confirmed over the last fortnight.

There's a new dengue strain in the city, which has sent doctors across hospitals into a state of panic. The last two weeks have seen a sharp rise in the number of patients being admitted in general as well as Intensive Care Units (ICUs) in leading private hospitals, with severe complications. Buzz in the medical fraternity is that this could well be Dengue-2 ? a strain where the infectivity rate is very high ? which had gripped the city 10 years ago, claiming five, with more than 500 being admitted at King Edward Memorial (KEM) alone. State health authorities are perplexed at the rise in the numbers this time of the year, prompting State principal health secretary, Sujata Saunik, to note that "the complications are worrisome".

Cuttack: Dengue fever is spreading more rapidly in Cuttack with each passing day.

The SCB Medical College Hospital received 56 blood samples of suspected dengue cases. Of which 23 cases are tested positive to ELISA NS-1 test. However, 12 of them are known cases of dengue as their samples are tested positive to the IGM test. Nine of these patients are undergoing treatment in the hospital while three have been discharged after treatment.

The Chairman of New Delhi Municipal Council, Jalaj Shrivastava, today called for a concerted campaign against dengue after the civic agency detected dengue larva in many key buildings, including hospitals, here.

Shrivastav said dengue needed to be stamped out. He was speaking before flagging off a rally by some 120 NDMC schoolchildren to create awareness about dengue and chikunguniya.

He expressed surprise that during recent checks by the NDMC staff, the larva of dengue was detected in the buildings of 'most important institutions, including hospitals'.

Private hospitals claim virology institute has been incommunicado, while NIV officials state that they need the samples to come in much earlier, and are already too busy with other outbreaks to focus completely on this one

Even as panic spreads in the city over a suspected Dengue-2 outbreak, testing of the virus has been stalled while private hospitals and officials at National Institute of Virology (NIV) engage in a blame game over samples being sent.

While NIV claims that the samples are being sent it after their window period is over, hospital officials say repeated attempts to contact NIV are failing.

Pune Municipal Corporation's (PMC) disease surveillance centre, though accepting that it has received the death records from various private hospitals, is reluctant to announce the them, due to in-house instructions. Nine-fold rise in cases, fourth death reported

AURANGABAD: The city reported the fourth death from dengue over a week's period with a 19-year-old woman athlete succumbing to dengue shock syndrome (DSS) at the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) on Wednesday night. GMCH medical superintendent P L Gattani confirmed on Friday that the patient died of dengue.

The GMCH also reported that cases of dengue have gone up nine times in July 2014, compared to June, when only three positive cases were reported. "Out of 90 serum samples tested in July, 27 tested positive for dengue. In June, out of 50 samples, only three were reported positive. Of the total 27 positives cases, 15 were from within the Aurangabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) limits, while 12 were from rural pockets," Gattani said.

The Binaka village that suffered dengue were reported in large numbers in June. Where is the health staff speaks of caution in this case. The larvae did not spread the disease in the village survey, conducted surveys fever. The patient came in large numbers and were treated at the district hospital. Treating some patients moved to Jabalpur.

District Hospital suffering from dengue Sadhana Patel (45) was also shown to treat and went back in the house he was healthy. Health after a few days then came the fever and was admitted to a private hospital in Mandla. From where it has been referred to Jabalpur. Jabalpur run medical hospital treatment. From where it was taken to a private hospital. Where he died Saturday afternoon. Of the families said that dengue was being treated in Jabalpur.

He says

Women were admitted to the district hospital. His treatment was gone and he had recovered and gone home. What causes death occurred in Jabalpur, after viewing the document can be explained.

Woman dies of dengue

Sunitha Shivachannappa (26), resident of Channe Gowda Layout in Maddur taluk of Mandya district, who had been admitted to Apollo BGS Hospital in Mysore with symptoms of dengue, died on Friday night. Prahlad, general physician, who treated her, said the tests had confirmed that the victim was suffering from dengue. However, District Health Officer H.P. Manche Gowda claimed that the woman had not died of dengue. Dengue-related tests were negative and the victim was actually suffering from gallbladder infection, he said. ? Staff Correspondent

The victim, a resident of Malwani in Malad (West), was also a chronic alcoholic, said doctors. ?He already had a liver failure and there were multiple medical issues with him. His respiratory system was not functioning properly and he was getting seizures,? a medical administrator said.

Dengue rages, but BBMP does an ostrich

Bangalore: The BBMP may be in denial mode on the rising incidence of dengue in the city. But the National Institute of Virology (NIV) has been getting at least 250 samples for the disease every week and at least them half of them test positive.

But the BBMP has put a gag order on city hospitals reporting dengue cases to the media.

A prominent hospital in Bangalore was slapped with a notice last week for attributing the cause of death as dengue in two cases. The BBMP Pourakarmikas' quarters in Kadirenapalya near Indiranagar had many persons showing dengue like symptoms.

Two patients from the quarters, Deepika (12) and Ravindraiah (67), died. The hospital treating them said they were suffering from dengue but the BBMP denied it.

After the deaths were reported, the BBMP took up a dengue awareness programme in the quarters and implemented measures to control larva breeding. Yet, the hospital was issued a notice.

"We found the cases negative for dengue," claimed Dr Manoranjan Hegde, Project Director, Communicable Diseases, BBMP, confirming the issuance of notice.

"We make a clinical diagnosis and start treating the patient.

The BBMP says such cases should not be declared as dengue cases till the lab in Victoria hospital confirms it as positive," hospital authorities told TOI.

Sources in the know said the BBMP move is to ensure there is no panic over the disease.

NIV confirms new strain as Dengue-2
Cases are not specific to areas and seen around the city and its peripheral areas
Institute also identified a less-virulent Dengue-3 virus in city

The National Institute of Virology (NIV) on Tuesday confirmed that the dengue cases being reported with severe complications at privately-run hospitals are indeed Dengue-2. This was established after Mirror reported on how the vector-borne infection was also causing complications like coma and multi-organ failures.

Following this alert, NIV called in for early samples and directed the Pune Municipal Corporation's (PMC) Health department and all such hospitals to collect serum samples for the institute to establish and diagnose the disease at its early stages.

First dengue case in Tripura

Agartala: The first confirmed case of dengue has been reported in Tripura, an official said here Wednesday.

"A man was found with dengue virus at the G.B. Pant Medical College and Hospital here. This is the first case of dengue in Tripura," health department spokesperson Pranab Chatterjee told IANS.

He said the state government has alerted doctors, health workers and people about the spread of dengue, encephalitis and other vector-borne and water-borne diseases.

'AMC's dengue prevention efforts poor'

AURANGABAD: Challenging the civic administration's claim that it had completed 70% per cent work of abate treatment in the city, members of the AMC standing committee on Tuesday alleged poor execution to prevent spread of dengue.

Expressing dissatisfaction, BJP corporator Sanjay Choudhary alleged that the civic authorities were using sub-standard quality chemicals for spraying and fogging. "The steps are not enough to prevent the disease," he said.

AMC clueless on dengue deaths

Meanwhile the AMC said that it was still clueless about the exact cause of death in four different cases in the city recently. Health officer in the AMC, Sandhya Taklikar, said that four dengue suspects died in the current season but the civic body was yet to receive official confirmation about the cause of death in all the four cases.
