Mayor Azad Singh, who visited Shahbad on Wednesday, blamed poor quality of water of the area for the deaths.
"I got the (water) samples tested and most failed the required level. Water is the reason behind the deaths in the area, not dengue," Singh told Hindustan Times. Singh said the corporation had deployed three TIFFA fogging machines (vehicle mounted), nine hand-held fogging machines, 43 domestic breeding checkers, five anti-larvae teams, three mini power sprays and pressed into service four threewheelers to spread awareness about dengue and its preventive measures. "Two mobile dispensaries with eight members of medical staff have been deployed to take measures, check mosquito breeding in the Shahbad Daulatpur area and provide treatment facility," the mayor said. The south corporation, on the other hand, is preparing a list of sensitive areas. "Commissioner Manish Gupta has directed health department officials to monitor colonies where mosquito breeding is high.

Dengue claims two more lives in Ranchi (Jharkhand)

RANCHI: In less than a week, dengue has claimed two lives in Ranchi.

Tushar Verma, a student of Class VII in a private school, died at Apollo Hospital Ranchi. He was initially taken to Rani Children Hospital on September 21 but when his condition worsened he was referred to Apollo on September 24 where he was underwent medical tests for dengue detection. The child died before the reports could arrive.

A doctor at the hospital said the reports came after the child's death and he tested positive for dengue. Similarly, Juhi Kumari, 18, lost her life to dengue on September 22 at a private hospital.

Spike in dengue cases, 1,567 this month

A spike in the number of dengue cases reported in the capital over the past one month prompted Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad to hold a review meeting with senior officials from the Delhi government and municipal bodies on Thursday.

According to data presented at the meeting, 889 cases of dengue were reported in the week between September 15 and September 21, a four-fold increase from the previous week. In September alone, 1,567 dengue cases were reported across the city compared to 52 in 2012 and 172 in 2011 during the same month.

New Delhi: Dengue has taken the life of two more children in Delhi on Thursday. Tekhand village resident, 6-year-old Priya and Sadar Paharganj resident, 8-year-old Priya died of dengue. It has been confirmed that there are 1729 dengue patients in the capital out of which 1613 cases belong to the Delhi zone.


The fact that 6-year-old Priya?s death was caused because of dengue has been confirmed by the hospital administration as well as the Delhi Municipality. But, the 8-year-old Priya?s death has not been confirmed by the Municipal Corporation.

A 45-year-old man from the Dooars, who had been admitted at a Siliguri-based private nursing home yesterday, died of suspected dengue today.
"Sib Shankar Prasad was admitted with fever yesterday. He was tested NSI positive. He died this morning. The cause of the death is multi-organ failure due to suspected dengue", said Dr Dipali Bhowmik, who attended on Prasad.

Dengue on rise, 647 cases recorded

Uttar Pradesh is under the grip of dengue, with 647 positive cases reported till date. According to the heath department, Lucknow is the worst affected district with 213 positive cases and two deaths.

After Lucknow, Kanpur has 139 dengue cases, followed by Bareilly with 74 cases. Apart from two deaths in Lucknow, two have been reported in Basti and Sitapur.

NEW DELHI: A few kilometres from Japanese Park in Rohini - where intense fogging is being carried out by North MCD before the Modi rally on Sunday - lies Shahbad Dairy, an urbanized village. At least 10 people died here on Tuesday, and residents claim there hasn't been any fogging here for the past two years. The atmosphere here is that of gloom and panic. The scared residents keep to themselves inside their houses and those going out cover themselves up, head to toe.

North MCD claims that all the deaths were cases of viral fever or diseases other than dengue. However, the families of those who died on September 24, insist it was dengue and accuse the corporation of trying to hide the truth. And in the absence of proper diagnosis and treatment, it is difficult to establish the truth. Only the stench of death is distinct.

Maximum dengue cases reported in one week (Rajasthan)

JAIPUR: Dengue continues to plague the state as the health department's latest report shows that maximum dengue cases of the year were reported in the week between September 15 - 21. During this period, 178 cases of dengue from different parts of the state were reported. Comparing the figures, in the first week of September, there were 121 cases of dengue with one death, in the second week the cases increased further and the state reported 159 cases in the second week. "The cases of dengue are on the rise. Every week, the cases are increasing," a health department official said.

So far this year (from January 1 to September 21), 767 cases of dengue were reported, but among them only three persons died. However, in comparison to the corresponding period last year, this year the cases have increased significantly. Last year, only 76 cases of dengue were reported from January 1 to September 21.

Rajendra Kumar, Rajkot's district collector, has had a first-hand experience of the disease his office is tracking. "On the very first day of fever, I had my blood tested to rule out dengue," he says. "I was extremely weak and had to be hospitalised in the first week of September." The district has seen 280 cases of dengue so far this season.

In Pune, National Institute of Virology deputy director Dr M S Chadda has had dengue infection earlier. In Ahmedabad, senior IPS officer Rahul Sharma's wife Sumita died in August this year, one of three victims out of 900-odd cases. And in Mumbai, the death of filmmaker Yash Chopra has created greater panic than ever that the disease can afflict anyone. Greater Mumbai has had 500 cases this year, out of over 2,600 statewide including 31 who have died.

National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme officials have counted more than 32,000 cases of dengue and 100 deaths in the country this year. Kerala has had the highest number of cases at nearly 7,000. The fatality rate is not as bad as it was last year, when 240 of 50,000 cases died across the country. Dr A C Dhariwal, director of NVBDCP, points out there are guidelines on combating the disease and there is no cause for panic.

Dengue test kits unreliable (Gujarat)

AHMEDABAD: A number of ready-to-use cheap dengue rapid diagnostic test kits are causing confusion when it comes to detection of such cases in the city.

States like Delhi and Maharashtra have already put in place clear guidelines of only relying on the tests results of National Institute of Virology (NIV) kit for detecting IgM for confirmation of dengue cases. Municipal health officials in Ahmedabad have already started sending feelers to private hospitals regarding the issue.

These kits, most of which are imported, are not adequately evaluated by any Indian scientific agency, while some are not even approved by the country where they are manufactured, leading to false positive dengue test reports, claim AMC officials.

Pune recorded highest dengue cases this month (Maharashtra)

PUNE: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) registered two more dengue cases on Saturday, taking the total to 120 - the highest recorded in a month. So far, 398 cases have been recorded this year.

Scientists at the Pune-based National Institute of Virology (NIV) have confirmed that three serotypes of dengue virus - DENV-1, DENV-2 and DENV-3 - are currently co-circulating in the city.

Among the three types, DENV-3 has been predominant in the last three months. The serotype has been associated with causing severe disease, scientists said.

Five more constables of the first women?s battalion of Bihar Military Police are down with dengue even as the civic body is planning to form a citizens? body to keep the city clean.

Till Friday, seven woman constables of the battalion had tested positive for dengue. Some of them had been administered platelet transfusion.

The dengue virus prevents the body from forming platelets and transfusions are required in serious cases.

On Sunday, the number of woman constables suffering from dengue had risen to 12.

JAMMU, Sept 29: With more than eighteen cases reported by health authorities, Dengue has claimed its second victim in District Samba, a 24 year old young girl who was to get married on October 10.

Pooja Devi is no more. Her father Rameshwar Singh, a resident of Mandi Phalora in District Samba is wailing and grieved over the loss of life of her daughter whose marriage he had been planning to solemnize within a week?s time. According to family members, Pooja fell ill on September 21 and was taken to District Hospital (DH) Samba where Doctors confirmed that she had caught dengue.

After getting initial treatment, she was referred to Army Hospital Pathankote on September 25. When she did not respond to treatment being given to her, family members said that they shifted her to a private hospital in Ludhiana on the morning of September 28 where she breathed her last. She was declared dead by doctors at around 3.30 pm in Ludhiana.

30-yr-old woman had Delhi address on voter ID and Aadhar cards, but death certificate says Shilpa was from Azamgarh.

In a shocking attempt to downplay the number of deaths caused by dengue in the city, a city hospital refused to admit a dengue patient on her present residing address but registered her native address of Uttar Pradesh instead.

30-year-old Shilpa is originally a resident of Azamgarh in Uttar Pradesh. Shilpa succumbed to the disease and as per the death certificate provided by the hospital, she hailed from Uttar Pradesh. Interestingly, Shilpa?s voter identity card and Aadhar card carry her Delhi address.

?She was suffering from dengue fever but the hospital refused to admit her on our present address. They admitted her to the hospital on the condition that we enter our Uttar Pradesh address in hospital records,? said Sanjay Kumar, Shilpa?s husband.

MOB ATTACKS KAKINADA HOSPITAL OVER PATIENT'S DEATH (Andhra Pradesh)

A private hospital in Kakinada was attacked by an angry mob after a 24-year-old patient died due to alleged medical negligence, police said today.
The incident took place yesterday at the hospital in Sarpavaram area after a dengue patient Ryali Pavan Kumar of Amalapuram died on Saturday night. The mob ransacked the hospital and damaged the furniture, they said.
According to Kumar's family, the hospital authorities lied to them that Kumar was alive till Sunday noon and hid the fact that he had passed away a day before, allegedly due to poor medical attention. However, doctors maintained that the patient was admitted with symptoms of dengue fever and loss of platelet counts.

2,124 dengue cases in Delhi this year, 400 in 4 days

NEW DELHI: The city's dengue figure crossed 2,100 on Monday, with the municipal corporations reporting 400 cases in the last four days. The number of dengue deaths has also gone up to 10 - three patients confirmed positive through Elisa test and the rest through NS1 rapid kit test.

The latter is not recognized as a confirmatory test for dengue as per the government rules, which, health experts claim, is the reason behind under-reporting of dengue spread and fatality this year.

"Most private hospitals and nursing homes conduct rapid kit test for diagnosis and treatment of dengue. In most cases, the Elisa tests are not conducted if the symptoms improve with symptomatic treatment. However, all critically-ill patients have to undergo the Elisa test," said a senior doctor at a major private hospital.

Jaipur: On Sunday, the total number of dengue patients reached near 700-mark in Rajasthan.



Dengue continues to plague the state as the health department?s latest report shows that maximum dengue cases of the year were reported in the last week of September. During this period, 193 cases of dengue from different parts of the state were reported.



In the third week of September, 178 cases of dengue were reported statewide. Comparing the figures, in the first week of September, there were 121 cases of dengue leading to one death, in the second week the cases increased further to159.

Municipal authorities have confirmed one more dengue death in the city — the third so far this year — and reported four more suspected deaths from the viral disease as the number of confirmed cases crossed the 2,000 mark.

Six-year-old Priya died on September 11, two days after she was admitted to Safdarjung hospital.

Of the four new cases of suspected deaths, three are from Rohini — two men, aged 27 and 54, died at Saroj Hospital on September 19. A 26-year-old woman died at the Baba Saheb Ambedkar hospital on September 24. In the fourth case, a 34-year-old man died at Fortis hospital on September 13.

Now, Bangalore battles 'dengue shock syndrome' (Karnataka)

Already challenged by a rising swine-flu threat, the State health department is now having to battle a resurgent dengue menace. Lurking to strike hard is the dengue shock syndrome (DSS), which has claimed one life so far. No less than 24 cases have been reported in just two weeks at a single hospital.
Patients diagnosed with DSS have been admitted to the emergency ward of Manipal Hospital here. Of these, eight have been admitted to the ICU where one dengue-related death has taken place.

For one of the patients, Zakir Ahmed, what seemed like a common flu turned to be a near-fatal experience. The 14-year-old, who developed fever 10 days ago, is now recuperating from brain fever and badly infected liver and kidneys.

GURGAON: The city is witnessing possibly the worst dengue outbreak in recent years, but the health department says there is no need to panic and blames private hospitals for spreading panic among patients for commercial benefits.

"Some private hospitals are spreading panic for commercial reasons. Every case in which blood platelet count drops is not dengue. But a fear of sort is being spread among patients even before conducting required blood tests. All precautionary measures should be taken, but private hospitals have been told to refrain from any exaggeration," Dr Pushpa Bishnoi, civil surgeon of Gurgaon told TOI.

"Contrary to some media reports, no dengue death has occurred in Gurgaon so far," she added.

While the official number of dengue cases in Gurgaon was 176, private hospitals claimed the actual number was at least twice as much.

MUMBAI: Amidst cries of a dengue epidemic in Delhi, Mumbai also recorded its highest incidence in September alone with more than 168 cases. Of the six deaths attributed to the mosquito-borne viral disease this year, five occurred last month.

Experts are certain dengue continues to be worrisome. It started with 32 cases in June, almost doubled to 66 in July and quickly rose to affect 87 in August. The leap in September, though, was due to a probable viral built-up in certain city pockets, experts told TOI. Most cases as well as deaths were recorded from the highrises of western suburbs, from Bandra to Borivli. Goregaon, in particular, was the epicentre this year for reasons yet to be clearly diagnosed.

Dearth of dengue kits hits hard (Bihar)

- Residents compelled to shell out huge amounts

The lack of dengue test kits at Patna Medical College and Hospital has compelled many residents to visit private diagnostic centres and cough up exorbitant amounts.

On Wednesday, Gopalganj-based farmer Ramji Singh had to shell out Rs 1,200 at a private diagnostic centre to get the dengue test done.

Similarly, Patna resident Ravindra Kumar, a rickshaw puller, was forced to get the test done from a private hospital for Rs 1,000.

Both Singh and Kumar were denied the free tests at Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH).

Sources at the civil surgeon?s office said PMCH had run out of dengue testing kits since Tuesday and hence no tests could be conducted.

?Yes, it is true that we had run out of kits on Tuesday. The National Institute of Virology, Pune, supplies us the devices. The kits were scheduled to reach us by Tuesday but it couldn?t for some reason. Today (Wednesday), I got the supplier?s call. He told me he would hand over the kits in the evening. Thirteen more cases of dengue were reported from city hospitals here on Wednesday. A total of 221 dengue cases have been reported so far from the city hospitals.

10 patients are from different areas including Focal Point, Mandeep Nagar, Aggar Nagar, Indra Colony, Giaspura, Khanna, Lohara, Dhandari Kalan, Mundian and Malikpur in Ludhiana district.

These patients are undergoing treatment at Christian Medical College and Ludhiana Hospital.

New Delhi, Oct 3 (IANS) Dengue has seen a steep rise in the capital with the number of cases reaching 2,557 Thursday.

On Monday, there were 2,124 case but in three days' time, the figure has shot up to 2,557.

"Of these, 2,522 cases are from Delhi and 35 from the adjoining states," said municipal health officer N.K. Yadav.

However, no new deaths due to the disease have been reported. Till date, there have been three confirmed deaths and seven suspected deaths from the vector-borne disease.

HEALTH DEPT SOUNDS DENGUE ALERT IN STATE

The dengue patients admitted in hospitals in Uttarakhand are not native to the State. According to the State Health Department, those undergoing treatment for dengue in hospitals located in Uttarakhand are from neighbouring States. Although the patients are coming from the neighbouring States, the State health department has issued a dengue alert in the State.

All hospitals and primary health centres have been alerted to watch out for dengue symptoms in patients and swiftly refer them for medical tests and supervision.

Taking the nod of toll of dengue cases which have crossed the mark of three dozen in the state, the health department has also pulled up its socks for providing immediate medical relief to dengue patients.

Death in Bokaro, dengue suspect (Jharkhand)

A 46-year-old man, who died at Bokaro General Hospital on Wednesday, is seemingly the second dengue fatality in the state this year.

R.J.P. Yadav worked in the operation garage wing of Bokaro Steel and was admitted to the government hospital on September 30. He had tested positive for dengue and his blood platelet count had dropped below 40,000 before he died of renal failure.

On September 22, Apollo Hospitals in Ranchi had confirmed death of one Tushar Kumar, a teenaged victim of the vector-borne disease.

The state health department, however, is yet to issue dengue confirmation on either death.

Dengue spreads tentacles in Gorakhpur (Uttar Pradesh)

GORAKHPUR: The region is grip of dengue as more than 114 cases have reported in September alone. Last year, more than 2,000 dengue cases were reported and more than 300 people died till September.* This year, more than 280 people died of the disease so far. A medical student also became a victim of dengue. On Thursday, he was admitted at ICU. As many as 12 new dengue patients were admitted at various hospitals in the past 48 hours. On Thursday, 10 new patients were admitted at Gorakhshnath Hospital.

I'm not sure where these figures are coming from. The reporter may be confusing Dengue with the ongoing Encephalitis outbreak in the Purvanchal. Officially there were 342 Dengue cases with 4 fatalities in all of Uttar Pradesh in 2012. In 2013 the numbers are 671 and 4 respectively. I believe that the official case figures underestimate the true situation by a ratio of several hundred to one. - Ro

JAIPUR: Cases of dengue-like fever with symptoms of the disease are a major concern for doctors. Such cases are being reported in leaps and bounds. However, lab techincians and physicians are confused over the fact that despite being "tested negative in dengue", the fever can be treated with same medication.

Hospitals are full with dengue and dengue-like fever cases. Sawai Man Singh hospital reported 21 fresh cases of dengue in past 24 hours, while in September 156 cases of dengue were reported, apart from the dengue like fever cases, which have similar symptoms like dengue.

"When we examine such patients clinically, they show symptoms of dengue, but their blood samples do not show the presence of dengue virus . We have termed such cases dengue-like fever. Also, as per the guidelines , unless a person is not tested positive for dengue, he/she will not be recorded in the hospital's dengue list," SMS hospital spokesperson Dr Ajit Singh said. He said among the dengue suspected cases, almost 30% patients are suffering from dengue-like fever. Rest are dengue cases.

However, among children, the percentage of dengue-like fever is higher . JK Lon hospital superintendent Dr SD Sharma said, "We are receiving almost equal number of dengue-like fever and dengue cases daily. On an average day, we receive 10 dengue and 10 dengue-like cases at our hospital."

PUNE: A shortage of dengue test kits from October 1 has hampered the screening of blood samples at the designated sentinel surveillance centres here. The centres have been effective in confirming dengue in patients.

An analysis done by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) in 2012 had revealed that in 39% cases, the spot/rapid test had reported false positive ? when the person was not actually infected with dengue. PMC health officials had sent 49 blood samples to Sassoon Hospital for confirmation. The samples were earlier found positive for dengue by private hospitals that used the spot/rapid tests. At Sassoon, 19 samples tested negative when put through advanced diagnostic methods such as Elisa.

Byotra, who heads the department of medicine at Sir Ganga Ram hospital based in New Delhi. The private hospital has recorded 257 cases of dengue so far this year.

He added that the official system of recording is based on disclosure from local hospitals, some of which do not send reports.

?We face the same situation year after year. The civic bodies tell us they are working to control spread of the disease. Why don?t they take better preventive steps?? Mr. Byotra said.

Latest reports suggest over a hundred cases of dengue were admitted to various hospitals in city over the last two weeks when the civic body had woken up to the health scare.

The deadly dengue fever has started spreading its tentacles across the State. The figure of suspected and confirmed dengue cases has crossed 277 in the State. The State health department has kept the medical centres on high alert in order to provide immediate medical relief to patients of dengue.

As per the department figures, 277 dengue fever cases were reported so far from across the State where Haridwar district (211) tops the tally followed by Udham Singh Nagar district (27) and Dehradun (22) dengue fever cases besides, rest of the remaining cases were detected from Almora, Pauri, and Pithoragarh districts.

A total of 39 dengue fever cases were reported in Dehradun and out of which 15 were from Dehradun, nine each from Haridwar and New Delhi, one each from Rudraprayag and Bageshwar and two each from Pauri and Tehri districts of Uttarakhand.

'256 dengue cases, 2 deaths in Jammu region since Sept'

A total of 256 cases of dengue have been detected in the Jammu region and two have died since the outbreak in September. Making a statement regarding spread of dengue in Samba district in the legislative assembly on Saturday, minister of state for health Shabir Ahmed Khan said the first


case of dengue was reported on September 3 in ward 8 of Samba.
He said till date, 256 cases have tested positive in Jammu division, of which 75 have been reported in Jammu, three in Kathua, one in Rajouri and 168 in Samba.

The minister informed the House that a child, Mehak, of Bari-Brahmana died on September 19. He, however, clarified that Pooja, a resident of Samba, who died on September 9 was not seen and treated by any doctor of the J&K Health Services. The victim was reported to have been admitted to Ravi Hospital, Pathankot, from where she was referred to DMC Hospital, Ludhiana, where she later died.

The dreaded dengue fever claimed another life in Siliguri to take the toll to 10, with more than 1,000 reportedly testing positive so far. Rinku Mohonto (7), a resident of Palpara area under SMC ward No. 4, breathed her last on Friday night.

Her family members said Rinku had been admitted to Siliguri district hospital on Thursday with high fever and her health started to deteriorate further. Acting on the doctors? suggestion, Rinku was shifted to North Bengal Medical College and Hospital, but her health continued to decline prompting her family members to decide on admitting her at a private nursing home.

Delhi dengue toll rises to four

The number of deaths due to dengue in the national capital has risen to four and the number of cases now total 2,916, said an official Monday.

According to municipal health authorities, 35-year-old Gautam Priyanka, a resident of KishanGargh in Delhi, died Monday due to the vector-borne disease.

The other victims who have succumbed to the virus, as confirmed by authorities, are Phool Singh, 47, of west Delhi's Ashok Nagar, Priyanka Shankar, 21, of north Delhi's Pratap Nagar and Priya Jha, 6, of south Delhi's Okhla.

Pune records 15 dengue cases in four days (Maharashtra)

PUNE: The city has recorded 16 confirmed dengue cases within a span of four days between October 1 and October 4, reveals the latest report of Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).

"On an average four people are being diagnosed with dengue in Pune city. PMC has registered a total of 125 cases in September ? the highest recorded in a month. So far, 420 cases have been recorded this year," said a civic health official.

Over 50 Dengue patients admitted in General Wards

JAMMU: Dengue has struck Jammu. Over 50 patients are undergoing treatment at the premier Government Medical College (GMC) Hospital but not without risk. All these patients have been admitted in General Wards thus putting other patients at risk.
GMC?s Head of Department (HoD) Medicine Dr Annil Mahajan told STATE TIMES that over 100 cases of suspected dengue were referred from the rural areas to the hospital last week.
?We have asked the Hospital Administration for earmarking isolation wards to treat Dengue cases,? said Dr Mahajan, adding that ?the patients from other districts are also reporting to GMC who could have been treated at the respective district hospitals as well.?

4 more students suffer from similar symptoms; complaints pour in over poor upkeep of OGH college

Four nursing students of Osmania General Hospital (OGH) Nursing College were hospitalised on Monday with dengue symptoms, a day after a nursing students had of dengue died in the early hours of Sunday. Officials, however, maintained that the condition of the four girls was stable.

The death triggered protests from the students, who on Monday boycotted their classes and stayed away from their work. They charged that the upkeep of the nursing hostelswas not up to the mark, which led to rampant mosquito breeding.

?We have come across situations where students have to clean their own toilets and rooms due to lack of cleaning staff ,? says Government Nurses Association president M. Annamma. Nursing school students alleged that neglect of the hostels was a deliberate attempt by the hospital management to make them vacate the premises.

The residents of Noida are reeling under the fear of rising cases of dengue which has claimed 15 lives so far. The misery does not end here. Dengue continues to plague the residents with the recent steep rise of dengue cases in the city. According to residents, over 300 cases of dengue have been reported this monsoon from the Noida authority. But, the health department has registered only 75 cases.
Last year, 151 cases of dengue were registered where as this year the number of cases is increasing without halt. Last week five patients were reported dead at the government hospital.

300 dengue cases in Bandra in 4 weeks (Maharashtra)

After Goregaon and Santacruz, upscale Bandra (W) has been severely hit by dengue, with around 300 cases reported in one month.

Over the last four weeks, the two main hospitals of the area, Holy Family and Bhabha, have reported around eight cases each every day. Most patients reside in neighbourhoods such as St Leo's Road, St Andrew's Road, and Pali Market Road.

Like in Goregaon and Santacruz, several residents in Bandra needed Intensive Care Unit (ICU) admission.

DENGUE THREAT LOOMS LARGE IN JAMSHEDPUR; 10 CASES CONFIRMED (Jharkhand)

Dengue and viral fever is spreading across the steel city, with affected people continuing to pour into hospitals and nursing homes on Monday.

Sources at health department informed that till now there have been 10 dengue positive cases detected at lone vector test lab of Kolhan in MGM Medical College, Dimna. The patients samples were sent from Tata Main Hospital (Bistupur) and Mercy Hospital (Baridih).

As per data available with the Integrated Diseases Surveillance Program (IDSP) office of East Singhbhum, out of the 10 cases, four patients were from Seraikela Kharsawan district and six from East Singhbhum district. There has been no casualty in dengue cases so far in 2013.

Official sources said the number of cases of dengue and viral fever was on the rise, especially in the fringe areas, in the past one week. This was reportedly owing to the heavy concentration of vectors in these areas.

Dengue has been terrorising Siliguri in the plains and other areas including Sikkim for a while, and now a death from the dreaded fever has been reported from Kalimpong. Padma Golay (47) who was working as a nurse in Kalimpong sub-divisional hospital died today from dengue. Sixteen more cases of the illness have been reported from the hospital.

Hospital sources said Golay was suffering from high fever and was admitted on October 4. Three tests were conducted on her following which she was found positive for NS 1 and IGA. After her condition deteriorated sharply on Sunday evening, Golay was referred to Siliguri, but she died on the way. Kalimpong residents have become apprehensive about dengue spreading even as patients at the hospital have complained diagnostic tests are not being conducted in time.

SDMO Dr. D Sonam verified Golay’s death was due to dengue, but dismissed allegations about the hospital showing negligence. He said chances of dengue spreading in town have increased after Golay’s and tests are being conducted on every fever patient. The hospital administration is ascertaining if the deceased contracted dengue in Kalimpong or when she had visited the plains, added Sonam.

The director also said that 364 dengue positive cases have been reported from all over the region and most of these cases have been reported from Samba District. The department has been fully geared up to meet the situation and cooperation from the people is also needed to clean the stagnant water in and around their residential areas to curb the spread of dengue.
