Dengue rising in Pune, Mumbai
Anuradha Mascharenhas : Pune, Sat Sep 14 2013, 05:51 hrs

Pune and Mumbai contribute a large share of dengue cases with an increase registered in the numbers every year in the state. A total of 1,818 dengue cases and 31 deaths have been registered in the state till August this year, of which more than 400 cases are from Pune and over 700 from Mumbai.

Since January, 329 cases have been registered by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) while Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation health authorities have registered 14 cases so far.

Five deaths have been registered in PMC areas. Even as PMC health officials have initiated court proceedings in 10 cases where mosquito breeding sites were found, virology experts from National Institute of Virology (NIV), who had conducted an earlier study to assess the clinical picture of dengue cases in the city, had found a circulation of multiple serotypes of the virus. Serotypes, DENV-1, 2 and 3 and Den-4 have been co-circulating this year too, said NIV Director Dr D T Mourya.

Dengue cases cross 200 mark in SCB hospital

CORRESPONDENT

State Health Minister Damodar Rout continues to underplay the dengue situation in the State even as the disease has claimed more than 30 lives this season. Another colleague of his announced here last month that dengue cases would come down to ?zero? within seven days.

But on Saturday, the number of dengue patients in SCB medical college and hospital here crossed the 200 mark. While 211 patients are now under treatment in the dengue wards, eight others are under treatment in two ICUs of the Hospital in critical condition. Shockingly, scores of these patients are children below 15 years, which is a major cause of concern for the treating doctors.

Looking at the inflow of dengue patients in the Hospital, the authorities have converted yet another floor of Trauma Care Centre into dengue ward and opened an exclusive dengue ICU having six beds. With this, three floors of Trauma Care Centre are now filled with dengue patients.

Type 3 dengue virus more predominant (Maharashtra)
Umesh Isalkar, TNN | Sep 16, 2013, 05.58 AM IST

PUNE: Scientists at the Pune-based National Institute of Virology (NIV) have confirmed that three serotypes of dengue virus ? DENV-1, DENV-2 and DENV-3 ? are currently co-circulating in the city.

Among the three types, DENV-3 has been predominant in the last three months, between July 1 and September 12. The serotype (a strain/type of virus) has been associated with causing severe disease, scientists said.

"In the last three months, we could identify the serotype by molecular methods in 28 samples. Of these, DENV-3 was the causative agent in 19 cases, while DENV-2 was found in eight samples and DENV-1 in one sample. Therefore, DENV-3 has been predominant between July 1 and September 12 this year," scientist Cecilia Dayaraj, head of the dengue research group at the NIV told TOI.

Dengue figures in Lucknow far exceed those issued by govt, say private practitioners (Uttar Pradesh)
TNN | Sep 16, 2013, 06.04 AM IST

LUCKNOW: Against figures issued by government, the number of dengue affected in the city is manifold. This can be estimated from the fact that private physicians are seeing at least 2-3 dengue positive cases each day.
...
The claim can be verified with statistics gathered from private pathologies which are conducting tests to confirm infection. "Dengue cases are surely more than what the government claims. We have confirmed dengue in more than 50 patients in the last three weeks," said a pathologist in Hazratganj.

The claim appears to be true as official figures for dengue in the city stand at 123 as of now. Incidentally, the number of cases contained a day after TOI published a report stating that dengue recorded a 75% increase in five days. Consider this: while there were 69 cases till Saturday last, the number of dengue positive persons climbed to 121 on Thursday. Since then, only two dengue positive patients have been reported.

Operation Dengue: Sting operation reveals how test reports on platelet counts done in hospitals and pathology labs are not at all credible
Ashish Maharishi and Amit K Chaudhary
New Delhi, Friday, September 20, 2013 | 22:44 IST

In a major revelation Aaj Tak/Headlines Today has exposed on how test reports on platelet counts done in various hospitals and pathology labs are not at all credible.

At a time when dengue patients are flocking to hospitals and there is serious dearth of platelets in the market Aaj Tak/Headlines Today has found that there is immense variation in the test results of hospitals and pathology labs.

Aaj Tak/Headlines Today did a sting operation on a number of hospitals and path labs and took dengue patients and their blood samples in the National Capital Region.

We took Rakesh Kumar to Paras hospital in Gurgaon. Rakesh had high fever for the last two days and had symptoms of dengue. A blood sample was given in the hospital. A few kilometres away in Gurgaon itself blood sample of Rakesh for platelet count was given in Dr Lal Path Lab as well. To our surprise the result of the test showed a difference of 26,000 platelets. Paras hospital in its report showed Rakesh Kumar had 24000 platelets. Whereas, on the other hand Lal Path Labs revealed that he had 50000 platelets.

The mission of Aaj Tak /Headlines Today was to conclusively find out if this discrepancy was visible in this hospital only or other hospital/path lab as well.
