FIVE-MEMBER DOC PANEL TO PROBE DENGUE DEATHS (Odisha)
Monday, 12 August 2013 | PNS | CUTTACK | in Bhubaneswar

If the mandarins of the State Health department and doctors of the SCB Medical College and Hospital here are allowed to have their way, then the State Health Minister Dr Damodar Rout would soon come out with a statement in his own inimitable style that not a single person suffered from dengue in the State this season.

This assumption apparently gained significance on Sunday when the Health department formed a five-member team of doctors on the day to ascertain the causes of death of those two persons who died in the SCB having dengue positive virus in their blood samples.

People here believe that the entire exercise of the Health department is aimed at upholding the continuous denial of the Health Minister that there has been no dengue death in the State this season. Despite the fact that at least four persons have died in Cuttack city alone due to dengue since last month, Rout continued to brush aside the fact.

Be wise, choose proper dengue test (Karnataka)
By Sharadha Kalyanam | ENS - BANGALORE 12th August 2013 08:09 AM
Ganesh had a dengue-like fever. His symptoms were the obvious: high fever, body pain, bleeding and red spots on his skin. Panicked by the mounting dengue scare, his parents took him to a nearby private hospital for a rapid test also called strip or card method, which costs Rs 300. They did not know when exactly he caught the infection. The result was negative and his parents were relieved. But Ganesh continues to suffer. A few days later, with no treatment he died of Dengue Shock Syndrome (DSS).

Why? Because Ganesh?s report gave a false negative thus misled the family. Why did the test rule out dengue? Because, he had the infection for more than five days, and the only way to detect it is an IgM-based ELISA test.

Despite this, doctors in the city claim that most patients are still opting for the early detection rapid method because the results are available in less than 30 minutes, and the test is more commonly available, although its not very accurate.

While the disease has taken five lives so far and more than 800 people are detected positive, Health Minister Damodar Rout?s claim that dengue is in control in the State shows his lack of concern to health services which is in shambles, BJP spokesperson Sajjan Sharma said.Rout has been vehemently denying any loss of life due to dengue. Nitai Mehta, Founder Trustee, Praja, said, ?BMC needs to be complimented on reducing the increase in malaria cases drastically from the peak of 2010-2011 (over 78,000 cases) to less than 22,000 cases reported in 2012-2013. But there is little reason for complacency. Cases of dengue have shot up drastically. TB incidences are also on the rise. Deaths due to cholera have almost tripled from the previous year.?

The data collected from MCGM dispensaries and hospitals and State hospitals and other Government health centres shows that in 2012-2013, there were 4,867 dengue cases as opposed to 682 cases in 2008-2009. Last year, 36,417 cases of TB were reported from municipal and Government dispensaries and hospitals, of which 6,921 patients died of TB.

Alarming 80% rise in dengue cases this year

Durgesh Nandan Jha, TNN | Aug 21, 2013

NEW DELHI: Dengue cases have risen alarmingly across the country this year, with data showing an 80% rise in the disease till July 31 as compared to the same period last year.

India has recorded 15,983 dengue cases so far in 2013 as compared to 8,899 cases in the corresponding months last year, latest health ministry data shows. But the good news is, while the cases have risen sharply, fatalities have actually declined - 56 as compared to 76 last year.

Kerala reported most dengue cases at 5,801, followed by Karnataka (3,775), Tamil Nadu (3079) and Maharashtra (961) till end-July . Delhi witnessed a sharp rise in cases over the last few weeks, with the total this year touching 54. No one has died due to dengue in the capital so far.

'Several factors for spread of dengue'

"There is no single reason for the increase in dengue cases. It is governed by various man-made and environmental factors including unprecedented growth in population, unplanned and rapid urbanization and inadequate waste management," union health minister Ghulam Nabi Azad stated in a written reply in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.
