Dengue-like disease hits Bangalore (Karnataka)
Nivedita Niranjankumar, Bangalore, July 9, 2013, DHNS:
Ailment affects children; many deaths feared

A mysterious, dengue-like disease is spreading in Bangalore. The still unidentified ailment is affecting many children, triggering a sharp fall in blood platelet count, multiple organ failure, and eventual death.

At least five deaths have been reported from a prominent city hospital alone with more feared in other medical set-ups, both private and government.

Based on the symptoms ? high fever, vomiting and low platelet count?many doctors have dubbed it ?dengue shock syndrome,? a serious form of dengue. But they are not so sure, and want the government laboratories to label the disease. Clearly, the testing has to be comprehensive and immediate.

HC raps MP government for inept handling of dengue outbreak
Manjari Mishra, TNN | Jul 10, 2013, 07.22 AM IST

JABALPUR: Criticizing the state government for its inept handling of the increasing number of dengue cases in tribal-dominated pockets of Mandla, the Madhya Pradesh high court on Tuesday trashed the sketchy status report submitted by the health department and sought a fresh and comprehensive report about the ground situation on July 15.
...
The court was responding to a PIL filed by Mandla activist Sudhir Upadhyay. Alleging that the state's heath machinery had failed to curb the crisis that led to 10 deaths while 300 had tested positive for the deadly virus in Bakauri village, the petitioner claimed that villagers had fled their homes in panic, fearing an epidemic. Upadhyay said while the first case of dengue was reported on June 3, the expert team of four doctors from Jabalpur arrived in Bakauri only on June 23. This, the petitioner said, proved the cavalier manner in which the entire situation was managed in the impoverished belt.

Hospitals record rise in dengue cases

SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT

Contrary to claims by the State health authorities that dengue is under control in the city, hospitals are recording a rise in the number of people suffering from the vector-borne disease. At least six deaths have been reported from both government and private hospitals in the last one month. Another death was reported from a private hospital on Thursday.

Fatima (24) from Mahadevapura, died at a private hospital from dengue. Although Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) officials confirmed the death, they cited the cause to be ?suspected dengue?.

?The woman?s blood sample has been sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) and the disease can be confirmed only if the sample tests positive in NIV,? said BBMP Nodal Officer for National Vector-Borne Disease Control programme K. Sangamitra. She said a total of 372 positive cases had been reported from the city from January.

Dengue numbers up, as rain continues to lash Bangalore (Karnataka)

Despite media reports about the rise in dengue cases in Bangalore, doctors say there is no need to panic. BBMP claims the surveillance has been stepped up and no dengue deaths reported so far in the city this year.

Vaishnavi Vittal, 22 Jul 2013 , Citizen Matters
...
According to the BBMP there have been 439 dengue cases reported in the city this year. Despite media reports about dengue deaths, the BBMP says there have been no mortalities. For example, a recent media report claimed that one person died due to dengue at M S Ramaiah Hospital. BBMP?s Nodal Officer for Mosquito Control, Dr K Sangamithra says that while the news of the death is true, the victim was not from Bangalore and only happened to be admitted in a hospital within BBMP limits. Therefore, she says, the case will pertain to the city/district of origin of the victim.

Dr Sangamithra says the same is true for deaths in other hospitals as well.

For example, Dr S Rajanna, Resident Medical Officer, Bowring Hospital, says the hospital has seen at least three dengue deaths this year.

At St Martha?s Hospital, the Associate Medical Superintendent says there have been three dengue deaths this year that took place in May.

The office of the Medical Superintendent of Victoria Hospital says they have had one dengue death in the first week of July.

Citizen Matters was unable to independently verify whether each of these victims were from outside BBMP limits and if they only happened to be admitted in a city hospital for treatment.

Also, given that many hospitals do not share information on dengue cases with the BBMP, it is likely that even if dengue deaths have occurred, they would have gone unreported.
