?Malaria toll 46 times govt count?
Kounteya Sinha TNN

New Delhi: Malaria deaths in India could be almost 46 times the official figure issued here.
A new study by University of Washington researchers published in Lancet shows that malaria kills 1.2 million people worldwide each year ?double the number cited in the World Malaria Report 2011. In India, the study estimates ?4,800 malaria deaths in children younger than 5 years and 42,000 malaria deaths in those aged 5 years or older? for 2010 as against ?19,000 malaria deaths in children younger than five years and 87,000 malaria deaths in those aged five years or older in 2002.?
This means malaria killed around 46,800 Indians in 2010. But the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme estimates that 1,023 people died of malaria infection in 2010. A health ministry official said, ?The malaria mortality figures quoted by NVBDCP are those cases which are microscopically confirmed.?

India: 2012 Malaria cases

Source: http://indiatoday.intoday.in/story/deadly-malaria-parasite-gaining-foothold-in-delhi/1/186692.html

Neetu Chandra New Delhi, April 30, 2012
Deadly malaria parasite gaining foothold in Delhi
Delhi has already witnessed 13 malaria cases this season.

The Monsoon may be some days in coming, but that hasn't stopped the mosquitoes from spreading their wings.

A deadlier malaria parasite is increasingly gaining foothold in Delhi at the expense of a more curable and less dangerous malaria virus, leaving doctors in the Capital anxious.

Delhi has already witnessed 13 malaria cases this season and what has worried health officers at the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) the most is the arrival of the deadly malaria parasite - Plasmodium falciparum.

Four parasite species cause malaria in humans - Plasmodium falciparum, Plasmodium vivax, Plasmodium malariae and Plasmodium ovale. Of these, Delhi generally witnesses Plasmodium vivax, which is easily curable with the help of Chloroquine medicine.

But over the past four years, Plasmodium falciparum has been spreading its tentacles. The falciparum is the deadliest form of malaria with a very high mortality rate. "In the past three-four years, there has been growing cases involving Plasmodium falciparum, which is worrying," Dr V.K. Monga, the MCD's health committee chief, said, adding: "At least 50 per cent of the cases were of falciparum..."

GUJARAT:
Malaria cases 3 times higher than last year
Source: DNA | Last Updated 05:27(06/05/12)

Ahmedabad: The number of Malaria Pv (Plasmodium vivax) cases has registered a three-time rise from last year. From 518 cases last year, Malaria PV cases have jumped to 1,482 in 2012. Similarly, other vector-borne diseases such as Malaria falciparum and dengue have also seen a rise. Stunned by this, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has now decided to scan blood samples of 10 per cent of the city's population. Although vector density is at the lowest in the city, the civic body faces challenges in controlling vector-borne diseases. The dengue cases have increased from 48 in January-April last year to 60 this year. Similarly, Malaria falciparum cases have also reached 163 in the current year compared to last year's 132. Jaundice cases have reduced by 50 per cent to reach 1,225 till April 2012 compared to 2,559 cases during the corresponding period last year. Gastroenteritis cases have seen marginal rise.
