It's that time of the year again. And the Delhi government is bracing up to fight mosquitoes and the diseases such as dengue, malaria, chikungunya, etc. that the tiny insects spread by their deadly bite.
Though dengue cases have not reported a significant rise than last year but
malaria has already announced its arrival with a three-fold rise in cases than the corresponding period last year. "As many as 61 cases of malaria have been reported so far, against 18 cases last year for the same period. The rise may be attributed to more diagnostic laboratories for malaria, but that doesn't mean we will be any less careful," said a health official from the unified municipal corporation of Delhi (MCD)...

Malaria deaths rattle govt in dengue season
Jhilam Karanjai, TNN | Aug 26, 2012, 05.05AM IST

KOLKATA: The death of four malaria patients at Bankura Medical College has prompted the health department to initiate an internal probe to find out the lacunae in the referral system for treating malaria patients.

"Bankura Medical College is the highest referral centre at Bankura District. Four patients dying in quick succession at that facility is really a reason for introspection," said a senior official in-charge of the malaria section.

Malaria still the bigger of the two killers in Mumbai
By Sumitra Deb Roy, TNN | Dec 11, 2012, 12.26 AM IST

MUMBAI: The city has been in the throes of dengue for the last two months but it is still malaria that is the bigger killer of the two diseases.

BMC figures show that cases of malaria are steadily declining in Mumbai and, in contrast, H1N1 and dengue cases are rising disturbingly. But even so, the incidence of malaria and the deaths caused by it are much higher than the toll of H1N1 and dengue combined.

From January to November this year, malaria killed 41 people, which was more than eight times the fatalities claimed by dengue (5) and H1N1 (5). The tally of dengue cases in 2011 was 416; this year, it jumped by nearly 125% to 935. Likewise, the incidence of H1N1 was just six in 2011; this year, it is 358.
