UPDATE: Outbreak increases to 79 cases ? and growing
3rd walk-in vaccination clinic scheduled Nov 16, Crystal Lake

WOODSTOCK IL ? McHenry County?s initial pertussis outbreak has grown beyond the school yard and is now being reported in the general public, in twelve (12) communities. McHenry County Department of Health (MCDH) reports 79 cases of pertussis in the following areas ? Algonquin (1), Cary (35), Crystal Lake (9), Fox River Grove (5), Harvard (1), Hebron (1), Huntley/Lake in the Hills (5), Island Lake (1), Johnsburg (1), McHenry (5) and Woodstock (15); ages range from 3 months to 35 years old. The County?s last significant outbreak came in 2004 (191 cases); last year saw 9 cases, with 51 cases of pertussis in 2009.

Another walk-in vaccination clinic has been scheduled with Dominick?s Pharmacy for Wed. Nov. 16, 2:30pm-7pm, at MCDH?s Crystal Lake office (100 N Virginia Street) to provide the Tdap vaccine for those 11 years and older who have not received it in the last 10 years. The cost is $50. Medicaid is accepted for individuals aged 11-18; must present Medicaid card. The vaccine is $15 for those aged 11-18 who are uninsured or underinsured, and uninsured adults aged 19 and older who meet income requirements. In addition, 11-18 year olds must be accompanied by a parent; bring current vaccination record.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) stresses the importance of a pertussis booster for those aged 11 to 64 and those 65+ who are caregivers for young children. High risk populations include infants-young children (birth-5 years old) who may not be fully vaccinated, children who didn?t receive a booster shot, those who are immune compromised and older adults. It is important for those under 11 years to be up-to-date on childhood vaccinations.

Pertussis is highly contagious and easily spread from person to person through coughing and sneezing. Symptoms such as cough, runny nose, sneezing and low-grade fever can last several weeks and lead to complications like pneumonia, encephalitis or pulmonary hypertension.

Frequent hand washing, covering the mouth, coughing into tissues and staying home when ill are important practices to limit the spread of infection. Returning to school/work prior to completing the five (5) treatment regime could allow pertussis to spread.

For more information on pertussis, visit www.mcdh.info or call MCDH at 815-334-4510.

Mundelein school reports four whooping cough cases

Four cases of whooping cough have been reported at Carl Sandburg Middle School in Mundelein, although officials there say the infection is not severe.

Letters were sent to parents last Friday notifying them of the situation and providing general information about the contagious illness. At the time there were three cases and one more has been confirmed since, said Principal Mark Pilut.

?It?s minor right now. Hopefully we caught it,? he said Tuesday.
The cases of whooping cough ? which is caused by bacteria infecting the mouth, nose and throat and is spread through the air by coughing or sneezing ? were not confined to a single classroom, he added. Sandburg has 595 students

Health Officials Investigate Whooping Cough Outbreak

By Amie Schaenzer

It could have been something as simple as a shared water bottle among teammates at a local high school sporting event.

The McHenry County Department of Health has been hard at work investigating the whooping cough cases and suspects the outbreak started at some sort of athletic gathering at Cary-Grove High School in August, said Debra Quackenbush, the health department's community information coordinator.

From there, the cases began to grow in Cary-Grove High School, eventually spreading to several more schools in Cary, Lake in the Hills, Algonquin, Huntley and Crystal Lake, and then, in recent weeks, to the general public.

As of Monday, 99 residents from 12 communities in McHenry County ? ranging in age from 3 months old to 37 years old ? had pertussis or whooping cough. Of the 99 cases, 91 involve teens and children under 19 years and involve school-aged children in 21 different schools...

McHenry County pertussis outbreak getting worse

By KATIE ANDERSON - kanderson@shawmedia.com Created: Friday, November 18, 2011 5:30 a.m. CST

County health officials are desperately trying to stop an outbreak of pertussis, also known as whooping cough.
...
Because pertussis can be so dangerous for segments of the community, Quackenbush and the health department have been working full-tilt to educate and vaccinate, but were disappointed Wednesday when during a four-and-a-half hour vaccination clinic only 29 people came for a dose of preventive medicine.

As of Thursday, the health department had identified 110 cases of pertussis in 21 schools across 12 McHenry County communities. The victims ranged in age from 3 months to 37 years old.

?And we are getting calls and reports on a regular basis, so that number will only get larger,? Quackenbush said. ?It is pervasive now.?

Re: IL: 2011 Whooping cough cases

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE November 28, 2011

Pertussis Awareness

The Rock Island County Health Department has recently had four confirmed cases of pertussis reported in this community. The diagnosed cases range from 7 to 14 years of age. Pertussis, also known as whooping cough, is a serious bacterial infection of the respiratory tract. Pertussis is a contagious disease that is usually spread through the air with close indoor repeated contact to an infected person by talking, coughing, or sneezing.

Persons diagnosed with pertussis must take the full course of antibiotics prescribed by their physician and remain isolated until they have completed five days of treatment in order to limit potential spread of pertussis. Close contacts of pertussis cases should also be taking antibiotics to prevent them from getting pertussis.

Those who feel they or a family member may have pertussis or been in contact with a pertussis case should consult their health care provider or doctor. Persons with a cough of seven days or longer with explosive coughing spasms or sleep-disturbing coughing should contact their physician regarding possible laboratory testing and treatment.

Parents of children attending Franklin and Carpenter schools in Park Ridge were notified this week that a staff member at each of the schools had been recently diagnosed with pertussis, commonly known as whooping cough.

Park Ridge-Niles School District 64 was informed of the cases Nov. 28 by the Cook County Department of Public Health, but the positions the staff members hold at each of the schools have not been identified.

Superintendent Philip Bender said he did not know the positions held by the staff members and Margaret Petkofski, facilitator of school health services, and Bernadette Tramm, district spokeswoman, both said the information had not been made available by the Cook County Department of Public Health due to health-privacy laws.

Letters to District 64 from the Department of Public Health state that ?a staff member? at Franklin and Carpenter elementary schools was diagnosed with pertussis, a highly contagious bacterial infection that is spread through coughing and sneezing. It is treated with antibiotics, but can be very serious for young children and infants, according to the Department of Public Health.

Whooping cough cases throughout the collar counties of the Chicago metropolitan area continue to grow as health department officials attempt to contain the worst outbreak in years.

Confirmed cases of the highly contagious bacterial infection have spiked in McHenry, Lake and DuPage counties, affecting close to 500 residents, the most in more than five years.

Whooping cough outbreak eclipses record in McHenry County

The number of whooping cough cases in McHenry County has surpassed the record set in 2004, and officials anticipate even greater numbers as the holidays approach.

As of Wednesday afternoon, there were 192 cases reported in 33 schools and 14 communities, said McHenry County Health Department spokeswoman Debra Quackenbush. The number of cases could top 200 by the end of the week, she said. The previous record, set in 2004, was 191 cases.

?They are jumping pretty quickly,? Quackenbush said. ?People will continue to get together at parties, whether it?s for school or business and, of course, family gatherings. This is the beginning of a very busy social season and that unfortunately doesn?t bode well for an outbreak.?

Quackenbush said she was not aware of any cases that required hospitalizations, although some of the ill were children as young as 3 months old.
