Bird flu is here again

November 7, 2023. The laboratory of the National Food Chain Safety Office (Nébih) confirmed the presence of a highly pathogenic bird flu virus in the county of Hajdú-Bihar. The liquidation of the affected stock has already begun, based on the suspicion.

The avian flu virus was identified in a breeding duck colony with approximately 22,500 ducks located in the Hajdúnánás settlement in the Hajdú-Bihar county. The animal keeper suspected bird flu because of the increased mortality, reduced feed and water consumption, and a drastic drop in egg production. The Nébih laboratory detected the H5N1 subtype of the virus in the dead animals.

The authorities started to liquidate the stock - already based on the suspicion. A protective zone with a radius of 3 kilometers was designated around the affected farm, and a surveillance (observation) zone with a radius of 10 kilometers was defined. An epidemiological investigation is underway to reveal the causes of the appearance of the disease...

Bird flu also appeared in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén and Bács-Kiskun counties

Disaster
Nébih confirmed the presence of the H5N1 subtype of the virus in two animal farms.

The National Food Chain Safety Office (Nébih) confirmed the presence of the highly pathogenic bird flu virus in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén and Bács-Kiskun counties as well, the authority told MTI on Monday.

According to the information, the breeder suspected avian flu in the breeding goose flock in Tiszabábolná, Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén county, due to the increased mortality, the lethargy of the animals, and the decrease in feed and water consumption.

Nébih's laboratory identified the presence of the H5N1 subtype of the virus, and then the authority took measures to eradicate about 6,000 animals.

At the Petőfiszállás in Bács-Kiskun county, the Nébih laboratory detected bird flu infection from the mandatory swab sample taken before slaughter. After that, the next day in the mallard duck population, the animals became lethargic and the death rate increased. The stock of around 7,100 animals will be liquidated on Tuesday. A protection zone with a radius of three kilometers was designated around both affected farms and a monitoring zone with a radius of ten kilometers was defined. Detailed information on bird flu is available on the thematic subpage of the Nébih portal (https://portal.nebih.gov.hu/madarinfluenza).

As we previously reported, last week the presence of the virus was confirmed in Hajdú-Bihar County and Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County.

Bird flu is spreading rapidly, are more expensive eggs and poultry coming?
author: Roland Tiszóczi

What will the outbreak of bird flu bring to our country? Could the epidemic cause supply problems and price increases before the holidays? What are the authorities doing and what can we do to stop the spread of the epidemic? Everything you need to know about the epidemic.

The bird flu epidemic is spreading rapidly in our country. Over the past week, hundreds of thousands of poultry - ducks, geese, turkeys and hens - had to be killed on ten farms due to the emergence of the highly pathogenic H5N1 variant of the virus, the National Food Chain Safety Office (Nébih) announced in response to a question from hvg.hu.

Since the outbreak of the epidemic has just begun, the number of destroyed animals currently affects a relatively small percentage of the poultry population - so far the domestic duck and goose populations have been most affected, where approximately 5.5 percent of the total population had to be destroyed. However, the number of poultry which, although not killed, are now subject to the trade ban of the designated protection and monitoring zone due to the spread of the virus is much higher. However, the Nébih did not comment on the number of animals thus banned, citing that "the census of the poultry holdings in the protection and monitoring area is in progress". (According to the latest data from the KSH, the number of domestic ducks in Hungary was 2.7 million, while the number of domestic geese was 614,000 before the epidemic.)

Concerns are heightened by the fact that six of the ten infected colonies discovered so far involved different counties. So far, the domestic duck population has suffered the greatest destruction: 22,500 ducks were killed in Hajdúnánás in Hajdú-Bihar County, 51,000 in Tiszadob in Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County, and 7,100 in Petőfiszállás in Bács-Kiskun County due to the infection. Then, in another farm in Tiszadob, the ducks had to be destroyed due to secondary infection, the number of which has not been disclosed here. Breeding, roasting and stuffing animals were also included in the destroyed herd.

In four farms, in Tiszabábolná in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén county and Szentes in Csongrád-Csanád county, six to six thousand breeding geese were destroyed due to bird flu, while in Tiszakarád in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén county and Polgár in Hajdú-Bihar county, where on 15 and on the 16th, the breeding geese were confirmed to be infected, the exact number has not yet been announced.

On Thursday, it became clear that the disease does not spare domestic chickens either: broiler chickens in Nagyhegyesen, Hajdú-Bihar County, were infected, but the Nébih has not yet provided information about their number here either.

In addition, the infection appeared in another county on Thursday evening. In Tiszakürt, Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok County, about 3,600 fattening turkeys were killed after the virus was detected.

To our question, the office wrote that

in previous epidemics, there were no examples of supply problems in the domestic retail trade, and this is unlikely now because of the epidemic. And since bird flu has never caused an increase in the price of poultry meat and egg products, this is not to be expected now either...

Bird flu detected in SE Hungary H5N1 bird flu has been detected in Békés County, in south-eastern Hungary, the national food safety authority (Nébih) said on Monday, after the virus was confirmed in a sample taken from a poultry farm in Orosháza rearing 7,400 mallard geese, which are in the process of being destroyed.

An epidemiological investigation to reveal the cause of the outbreak is also underway, and a 3km radius observation zone has been demarcated around the farm. H5N1 has already appeared in the counties of Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok, Csongrád-Csanád; Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg; Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén, Bács-Kiskun and Hajdú-Bihar...

Avian flu hits Hungarian poultry farms
15 outbreaks linked to the H5N1 virus serotype have been confirmed by the Hungarian veterinary authority during the past week.

November 22, 2023
Over the past week, 15 outbreaks linked to the H5N1 virus serotype have been confirmed by the Hungarian veterinary authority to the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH).

The affected premises are in seven different provinces broadly located in the east of the country.

Meanwhile, Italy has also recorded its first HPAI outbreaks of the autumn/fall season.

So far, presence of the same virus serotype has been confirmed at three farms — all in the province of Padua in the Veneto region. Affected were one flock each of meat turkeys, guinea fowl, and broilers, according to Italian health authority and research organization for animal health and food safety, IZSVe.

Also registering with WOAH the first HPAI outbreaks of the season are the animal health agencies of Croatia and the north German state of Mecklenburg-West Pomerania. The Croatian flock comprised 19,600 poultry of unspecified type, while the German outbreak directly impacted 24,000 meat turkeys.

In the United Kingdom (U.K.), just over 14,000 commercial birds of the same type were involved in the latest outbreak. It affected a farm in the east English county of Lincolnshire in the first week of November.
