Hong Kong: CHP is investigating a human swine influenza outbreak in a residential care home for the disabled (8/26/09)

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health today (August 26) urged members of the public and management of institutions to take preventive measures against human swine influenza (Influenza A H1N1) by observing strict environmental and personal hygiene.

The appeal was made following the CHP's investigation into a report of human swine influenza (HSI) outbreak in a residential care home for the disabled in Tsing Yi, affecting 16 residents and five staff members.

CHP's investigations

revealed that 11 males and 10 females aged from 23 to 54, developed fever, cough and sore throat since August 21. All of them sought medical treatment. One resident was admitted to hospital. All of them are in stable condition.

Fifteen residents and two staff members were confirmed to have been infected with HSI.

CHP staff have visited the centre and provided health advice to the staff.

Tamiflu has been given to the staff and close contacts of the patients as antiviral chemoprophylaxis.

The institution is put under medical surveillance.

Hong Kong: A secondary school is advised to suspend class (8/26/09)

The Department of Health today (August 26) advised a secondary school (Grades six to eight) in Southern District to suspend class for seven days starting tomorrow to stop the possible spread of human swine influenza (HSI).

The advice was made following the outbreak of human swine influenza in the lower secondary school of Hong Kong International School involving 32 students aged between 10 and 14, a spokesman for the department said.

Investigations showed that 11 boys and 21 girls of the school developed influenza-like illness symptoms since August 19. Laboratory results showed that two students were confirmed to have infected with HSI. All of the affected students are in stable condition. No hospitalization is required.

The department had visited the school and advised staff on infection control measures. The school is put under medical surveillance.

The spokesman called on parents to pay attention to the health condition of their children, and to remind them to observe good personal and environmental hygiene.

Hong Kong: Antiviral treatment and tests reserved for high risk patients (8/27/09)

In recent weeks, the Hospital Authority (HA) has noted a surge in attendance at Accident & Emergency Departments (AED) despite the opening of eight Designated Flu Clinics which have been in operation every day since June 13 and provided consultation to over 40,000 patients.

In the past four weeks, the average daily attendance at the 16 AEDs increased from 5,807 in the last week of July to 6,244 in the past week, with attendance peaking at over 6,900 on Monday (August 24) this week.

"At the same time, the attendance of patients presenting with influenza-like illness (ILI) in some major A&E Departments also shows a rising trend, from about 6% in June to around 10% this month," an HA spokesman said. The spokesman said ILI patients seeking consultation at both DFCs and AEDs will be assessed by clinicians to determine the course of treatment, the need for further investigation and hospital admission.

"However, tests for human swine influenza is not routine for ILI patients in general but for specific groups of high risk patients, namely, patients below the age of six, pregnant women, patients with persistent fever after 48 hours of symptomatic treatment and patients with chronic diseases," the spokesman said.

"The classification of influenza infection will not affect the diagnosis and treatment for the majority of patients who present mild influenza symptoms. Laboratory resources will need to be reserved for the diagnosis and subsequent clinical management of high risk patients."

The HA spokesman reiterated that public hospitals and clinics will only prescribe symptom control medication to influenza patients with mild symptoms as "antiviral treatment will need to be conserved and provided to clinically indicated patients and specific groups of high risk patients."

The HA will continue to assist the Centre for Health Protection in monitoring the situation of seasonal influenza and human swine influenza in Hong Kong by collecting patient specimens for surveillance purposes," the spokesman added.

Hong Kong: Update on Influenza A Outbreak at male ward of Tai Po Hospital (8/27/09)

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

Regarding earlier announcement that five patients in a male psychiatric ward of the hospital have been confirmed positive to Influenza A, a spokesperson of the Tai Po Hospital gave the following update today (August 27).

Four more patients (aged 26-59) in the concerned ward presented with symptoms of influenza-like illness today. The test result of one patient is positive to Influenza A while two others are negative. Test results of the three patients are negative to human swine influenza. The test results of the remaining patient are pending. Admission and visiting to the ward concerned would continue to be suspended.

Infection control measures have also been stepped up and all patients are under close surveillance. The Tai Po Hospital Infection Control Team has reported the case to the Hospital Authority and the Centre for Health Protection.

The appeal was made following the CHP's investigation into a report of a confirmed influenza A outbreak in an elderly home in Kwun Tong, affecting 22 residents.

CHP's investigations revealed that eight males and 14 females aged from 64 to 99, developed fever, cough runny nose and sore throat since August 12. Eight of them required hospital admission. Of those admitted, one resident was in serious condition while others were stable.

Nasal pharyngeal aspirates taken from 10 residents were tested positive to influenza A but negative to Human Swine Influenza.

CHP staff have visited and provided health advice to staff of the elderly home. Tamiflu has been given to the staff and close contacts of the patients as chemoprophylaxis. The institution is under medical surveillance.

Regarding the services of the eight Designated Flu Clinics (DFCs) and the confirmed human swine influenza patients admitted to public hospitals, the Hospital Authority (HA) spokesman provided the following updates today (August 27):

The Designated Flu Clinics today (as at 5 pm) provide treatment to a total of 1,097 patients with flu-like symptoms.

As at 2.30pm today, there were 379 newly confirmed cases of human swine influenza in the past 24 hours.

This brings to 10,468 the total number of confirmed human swine influenza cases in Hong Kong.

Currently, a total of 110 confirmed cases are staying in public hospitals for treatment.

Among them, 93 cases are in stable condition, seven in serious and ten in critical condition.

Furthermore, the confirmed cases announced today included 17 staff members of public hospitals (six male and 11 female, including four doctors, seven nurses, one clerical staff and five supporting staff).

So far there were 312 HA staff members being confirmed as human swine influenza.

Among them, 204 have already recovered and returned to work.

On the other hand, hospital records reveal that there are two more critical patients, a 89-year-old female patient and a 82-year-old male patient and who have been tested positive for Influenza A (H3), are currently under treatment in Tseung Kwan O Hospital and the Intensive Care Unit of Tuen Mun Hospital.

The HA spokesman reminded the public that HA has progressively resume service for chronic patients with scheduled appointment at the eight designated flu clinics (DFC). Chronic patients who have been pre-scheduled for follow up at the DFCs should go to the clinics according to their date of original appointment, bringing along the appointment slip and Identity Card.

Other general outpatient services such as episodic disease, injection and wound care will not be resumed at these DFCs for the time being.

Patients with other illnesses are advised to seek medical treatment at other general outpatient clinics in the district or private practitioners.

Hong Kong: Public reminded to be vigilant against upper respiratory tract infection (8/28/09)

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health today (August 28) called on people and management of institutions to maintain strict personal and environmental hygiene to prevent upper respiratory tract infection (URI).

The appeal was made following CHP's investigation into a URI outbreak in an elderly home in Kowloon City, involving 20 people. An investigation revealed that 18 residents and two staff members of the institution, aged between 35 and 92, had developed URI symptoms including fever, cough, running nose and sore throat since August 24. They all sought medical consultation and did not require hospitalisation. They are now in stable condition.

Staff of the CHP have conducted a field visit and provided health advice to the institution. CHP will continue to closely monitor the institution.

To prevent upper respiratory tract infection and influenza, the public are advised to adopt the following measures:

  • To build up good body immunity by having a proper diet, regular exercise and adequate rest, reducing stress and avoiding smoking;
  • To maintain good personal hygiene, and wash hands after sneezing, coughing and wear a mask when developing symptoms of respiratory infections;
  • To maintain good ventilation; and
  • To avoid visiting crowded places with poor ventilation, especially during peak influenza season.

Members of the public, particularly children, elderly people and those with chronic diseases, should wear face masks and consult their doctors for medical advice promptly if they develop symptoms of respiratory tract infection.

The Designated Flu Clinics today (as at 5pm) provide treatment to a total of 941 patients with flu-like symptoms.

As at 2.30pm today, there were 381 newly confirmed cases of human swine influenza in the past 24 hours.

This brings to 10,849 the total number of confirmed human swine influenza cases in Hong Kong.

Currently, a total of 105 confirmed cases are staying in public hospitals for treatment.

Among them, 88 cases are in stable condition, seven in serious and 10 in critical condition.

The newly confirmed critical case announced today is a 47-year-old male patient in Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital (PYNEH). The patient attended the Accident and Emergency Department of PYNEH for flu symptom yesterday (August 27) and was then admitted to Intensive Care Unit for further management. Positive result of human swine influenza was confirmed today (August 28) and he was prescribed Tamiflu and antibiotics. The patient is on ventilation support and he has a past history of leukemia. The hospital will closely monitor his condition.

The confirmed cases included a student of Queen Elizabeth Hospital Higher Diploma in Nursing. As a precautionary measure, the 125 students in the same class will not participate in any temporary clinical duty this weekend. Medical surveillance will be conducted for all the pupils. Chemoprophylaxis will be recommended to asymptomatic pupils while rapid tests on human swine flu will be performed on symptomatic cases followed by prescription of antivirals.

Furthermore, the confirmed cases announced today included 18 staff members of public hospitals (five male and 13 female, including one doctor, five nurses, three clerical staff, two allied health professional and seven supporting staff).

So far there were 330 HA staff members being confirmed as human swine influenza.

Among them, 219 have already recovered and returned to work.

On the other hand, hospital records reveal that there is one more critical patient, a 76-year-old man, who has been tested positive for Influenza A (H3) and is currently under treatment in United Christian Hospital.

The HA spokesman reminded the public that HA has progressively resume service for chronic patients with scheduled appointment at the eight designated flu clinics (DFC). Chronic patients who have been pre-scheduled for follow up at the DFCs should go to the clinics according to their date of original appointment, bringing along the appointment slip and Identity Card.

Other general outpatient services such as episodic disease, injection and wound care will not be resumed at these DFCs for the time being.

Hong Kong: Service of Shau Kei Wan Elderly Health Centre resumes normal (8/28/09)

A spokesman for the Department of Health today (August 28) said the service of Shau Kei Wan Elderly Health Centre (EHC) which had been suspended in June would resume normal starting next Monday (August 31).

Shau Kei Wan EHC, located at the ground floor of the Shau Kei Wan Jockey Club Polyclinic, a Designated Flu Clinic (DFC), has ceased operation since June 13 to prevent the possible spread of human swine influenza (Influenza A H1N1) to EHC members, the spokesman said.

"EHC members have been diverted to Wan Chai EHC for follow up and drug refills," he said.

The spokesman noted that appropriate measures like signage and staff to guide patients had been put in place to prevent the possible contact of fever patients attending the DFC and non-fever clients of the EHC.

"The measures are found to be satisfactory," the spokesman said. "EHC staff has already informed clients of the new arrangements," he said.

Hong Kong: Cleansing arrangements stepped up at LCSD facilities to ensure hygiene (8/29/09)

The Leisure and Cultural Services Department announced today (August 29) that an amenities assistant working at Lei Cheng Uk Swimming Pool was confirmed to have infected with human swine influenza.

He has developed flu symptoms on August 28 and has been on sick leave since August 29. The department said that the concerned staff member would only resume duty upon full recovery. It has also informed staff of the venue of the condition of the concerned staff member and notified the public by posting up notices at the venue. Operation of the venue remains normal. Staff are advised to seek medical consultation if they have any flu symptom.

Cleansing and disinfection of the public areas in the venue, the concerned staff member's work areas and commonly touched surfaces have been arranged to prevent the spread of the disease.

As at 2.30pm today, there were 398 newly confirmed cases of human swine influenza in the past 24 hours.

This brings to 11,247 the total number of confirmed human swine influenza cases in Hong Kong.

Currently, a total of 104 confirmed cases are staying in public hospitals for treatment.

Among them, 87 cases are in stable condition, six in serious and 11 in critical condition.

The newly confirmed critical case announced today is a 83-year-old man in Prince of Wales Hospital (PWH). The patient attended the Accident and Emergency Department of PWH for coughing on August 25 and was then admitted for further management. His condition deteriorated on August 28 and is on ventilation support in Intensive Care Unit. He has a history of chronic disease. The hospital will closely monitor his condition.

Furthermore, the confirmed cases announced today included 16 staff members of public hospitals (five male and 11 female, including three doctors, five nurses, three clerical staff, two allied health professional and three supporting staff).

So far there were 346 HA staff members being confirmed as human swine influenza.

Among them, 219 have already recovered and returned to work.

Hospital records reveal that a 70-year-old male patient with chronic disease who was admitted to Yan Chai Hospital on August 18 was confirmed to be positive result of Influenza A (H3) on August 20. He was transferred to Princess Margaret Hospital on August 25 and died on August 27.

The HA spokesman reminded the public that HA has progressively resume service for chronic patients with scheduled appointment at the eight designated flu clinics (DFC). Chronic patients who have been pre-scheduled for follow up at the DFCs should go to the clinics according to their date of original appointment, bringing along the appointment slip and Identity Card.

Hong Kong: A death human swine influenza case in Tuen Mun Hospital (8/30/09)

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

Tuen Mun Hospital (TMH) spokesperson made the following announcement regarding the death of a critical human swine influenza patient today (August 30):

A 43-year-old female patient, who was a chronic smoker, developed flu symptoms on 23 August and attended the Designated Flu Clinic on 24 August. The patient attended the Accident & Emergency Department of TMH on 26 August and was admitted to the Isolation Ward. The test for human swine influenza was confirmed positive result of human swine influenza was confirmed on the same day (August 26). The patient received Tamiflu, Relenza and antibiotics treatment. Her condition deteriorated and she was transferred to Intensive Care Unit on 26 August. She was in critical condition requiring ventilation support. Her condition continued to deteriorate and convalescent serum was given on 29 August.

The patient was succumbed at 00:17am today (August 30).

The case was reported to Hospital Authority Head Office and Centre for Health Protection.

TMH have informed her family and will refer the case to Coroner.

The hospital would like to express condolences to the patient's family.

Hong Kong: Tuen Mun Hospital staff cases of Human Swine Influenza (8/31/09)

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

Tuen Mun Hospital (TMH) spokesperson made the following announcement today (August 31):

Since August 28, seven staff members (two doctors, three nurses and two supporting staff) of a surgical ward have been confirmed to have human swine influenza (HSI).

The staff work in the same ward and presented with flu symptoms from August 26.

They attended the Accident and Emergency Department of TMH and Pok Oi Hospital for treatment and were granted sick leave immediately. They are all in stable condition. TMH has traced the close contacts of the staff in the hospital, and Tamiflu was prescribed.

The hospital has conducted HSI tests for all patients who have fever symptoms in the ward, and no patient has been confirmed with HSI so far.

Patients and their families have been informed about the situation.

The hospital has enhanced the infection control measures according to the HA Infection Control Guidelines and will closely monitor the condition of the patients and staff.

Patient service remains normal in the ward. The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for follow up.

Hong Kong: HA update on Designated Flu Clinic and admitted human swine influenza patients (8/31/09)

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

Regarding the services of the eight Designated Flu Clinics (DFCs) and the confirmed human swine influenza patients admitted to public hospitals, the Hospital Authority (HA) spokesman provided the following updates today (August 31):

The Designated Flu Clinics today (as at 5 pm) provide treatment to a total of 1,073 patients with flu-like symptoms.

As at 2.30pm today, there were 229 newly confirmed cases of human swine influenza in the past 24 hours.

This brings to 11,807 the total number of confirmed human swine influenza cases in Hong Kong.

Currently, a total of 110 confirmed cases are staying in public hospitals for treatment.

Among them, 93 cases are in stable condition, six in serious and 11 in critical condition.

The newly confirmed critical case announced today is a 55-year-old male patient in Tuen Mun Hospital (TMH). The patient attended the Accident and Emergency Department of TMH for flu symptoms on August 30 and was admitted to the isolation ward. His condition deteriorated on the same day (August 30) and he was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit. The patient was prescribed Tamiflu and antibiotics. The test result for human swine influenza is confirmed positive today (31 August). The patient is on ventilation support and is prescribed Relenza. He has a history of nasopharyngeal cancer. The hospital will closely monitor his condition.

Furthermore, the confirmed cases announced today included 14 staff members of public hospitals (six male and eight female, including eight nurses/nursing students, one allied health professional and five supporting staff).

So far there were 368 HA staff members being confirmed as human swine influenza.

Among them, 247 have already recovered and returned to work.

The HA spokesman reminded the public that HA has progressively resume service for chronic patients with scheduled appointment at the eight designated flu clinics (DFC). Chronic patients who have been pre-scheduled for follow up at the DFCs should go to the clinics according to their date of original appointment, bringing along the appointment slip and Identity Card.

Other general outpatient services such as episodic disease, injection and wound care will not be resumed at these DFCs for the time being.

Patients with other illnesses are advised to seek medical treatment at other general outpatient clinics in the district or private practitioners.
