These are the 25th and 26th Legionnaires' Disease cases reported this year.

Thirteen cases were reported in 2008, 11 in 2007 and 16 in 2006.

To prevent the disease, people are reminded to observe the following:

  • An individual may reduce his/her susceptibility to the disease by avoiding smoking and excessive drinking, and maintaining good health.
  • People handling garden soils, composts and potting mixes should take the following precautions:
    • Gently water gardens and composts using low pressure.
    • Open composted potting mixes slowly and make sure the opening is directed away from the face.
    • Wet the soil to reduce dust when potting plants.
    • Avoid working in poorly ventilated places such as enclosed greenhouses.
    • Wash hands carefully afterwards.
  • Proper design, operation and maintenance of man-made water systems. For more information about the good practices to be followed in the design, installation, operation and maintenance of man-made water systems, please visit the website of the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (www.emsd.gov.hk/emsd/eng/pps/oa_ld_pub_cp.shtml) for the Code of Practice published by the Prevention of Legionnaires' Disease Committee in 2007.

The Designated Flu Clinics today (as at 5pm) provide treatment to a total of 947 patients with flu-like symptoms.

Currently, a total of 72 confirmed cases are staying in public hospitals for treatment.

Among them, 62 cases are in stable condition, two in serious and eight in critical condition.

The patient attended the Accident and Emergency Department of AHNH yesterday (August 19) due to shortness of breath and was admitted into the Intensive Care Unit. Positive result of human swine influenza was confirmed on the same day. He was prescribed with Tamiflu and antibiotics. He is on ventilation support. The patient has a history of chronic diseases. The hospital will closely monitor his condition.

Furthermore, there are two more pupil nurses of Kowloon Hospital Nursing School confirmed today.

The HA spokesman reminded the public that HA has progressively resume service for chronic patients with scheduled appointment at the eight designated flu clinics (DFC). Chronic patients who have been pre-scheduled for follow up at the DFCs should go to the clinics according to their date of original appointment, bringing along the appointment slip and Identity Card.

Other general outpatient services such as episodic disease, injection and wound care will not be resumed at these DFCs for the time being.

Hong Kong: Human swine influenza outbreak in a kindergarten under close watch (8/20/09)

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health today (August 20) urged members of the public and management of schools to take preventive measures against human swine influenza (Influenza A H1N1) by observing strict environmental and personal hygiene.

The appeal was made following the CHP's investigation into a report of human swine influenza (HSI) outbreak in a kindergarten.

The school concerned is Sheung Shui Wai Chow Kindergarten (Branch) in Sheung Shui.

The CHP's investigations revealed that nine boys and 12 girls, aged from three to six, had developed fever, cough and sore throat since August 11. Three of them were confirmed to have been infected with HSI. It is noted that the school had suspended its whole summer classes starting today for thorough disinfection.

All the affected children sought medical treatment. They are in stable condition and no hospitalisation is required. CHP staff have visited the kindergarten and provided health advice to the staff. The kindergarten is put under medical surveillance.

Hong Kong: SFH on human swine flu vaccine (8/21/09)

Following is the transcript of remarks (English portion) made by the Secretary for Food and Health, Dr York Chow, at a media stand-up session before attending the International Scientific Symposium on Influenza Pandemic Response and Preparedness in Beijing this afternoon (August 21):

Reporter:
What will be the next step after the Government cancelled the tender for human swine flu vaccine?

Secretary for Food and Health:
This is only a procedure of the Government procurement process. Usually if in the first round of tendering exercise, there is no single supplier that can conform with the tender specifications, we can then proceed to re-tendering or a restricted tender exercise. This is what we are considering.
